I recently competed in the Krump Pow 6 event in Appleton, Wisconsin. They offered numerous tournaments such as smallsword, rapier, longsword, synthetics and mixed weapons. This is the gold medal match in the rapier tournament. If you are wondering about the weapons mismatch, my opponent chose to give up his dagger for a three point advantage.

Those 3 points for the loss of the dagger were not worth the massacre that I just witnessed 🤣

Absolutely. 3 points is not worth the handicap. Heck, even if it was 6 points, I wouldn't take it. The guy lost the fight even before it started.

I know the other fighter, he's primarily a one hand saber fighter. Has a tendency to get in his own way with an offhand.

Good match! Is there any situation where is advantagious to fight without the dagger? If I recall correctly, Thibault stated that with just the rapier you could fend a rapier and dagger opponent, but I am not convinced at all.

Is it possible to defend against sword and dagger with a single sword? Certainly but, as you would expect, it is all dependent upon the skill of the swordsman. Now for me, I would always want to fight with a dagger in my off hand because it does convey an advantage but it is important to note that advantages come in many forms.

That was great, but too short. If hits are worth 5 points, then maybe the fight should end at 20 rather than 12?

In this tournament, anyone willing to give up the dagger would gain a three point advantage.

@@RobertChildsRapier I understood that, I still find that exchanging a weapon for such a small amount of points made no sense. He lost additional defensive and offensive power so he could lose with a bit smaller point difference.

I can't speak to his motivation specifically but I do know another opponent opted to leave his dagger behind because he felt it was the only points he was going to score.
