Recently I traveled to Kansas City, MO to teach a seminar and compete in both the rapier and saber tournaments. This video highlights the gold medal match for that event. I have to say, my opponent fought tenaciously and with skill to make it to that final match and I give him great credit not just for his effort but for his continued desire to become a better swordsman.

The moment I saw the small ring, I could already tell this video won’t be too long. I’m looking forward to see your saber match.

The saber match was indeed a fun one. The rule set in play made things kind of interesting in terms of scoring but my opponent in that match was quite skilled.

That high low feint on the second point was very nice.

You would be surprised to find out just how effective that attack is.

Hope I could see the saber match between you and Josh. The guy has a very interesting style of footwork, curious to see how your style adapt against him jumping all over the place

I'll be posting that match as well. The rule set certainly made things interesting.

What a small ring! Not a lot of room for error in there.

You aren't wrong. Had to be quite mindful and balanced in the give/take of your ground.

Jesus dude xD You go from slowing down and losing momentum to suddenly being three feet foward! What exercises do you do for that?

Comes down to the spring tension I keep in the calves when I fence. That alone puts a good few hours of work each week into them. That ability to explode forward in the blink of an eye is a valuable tool.

Interresting. Is this a kind of point fight. One point, than break?

It was an unusual rule set in that afterblows negated any points made, and the bouts ran a total of five exchanges. So whoever scored three clean hits first, or had the most at the end of five exchanges, won.

@@olafjagel5134 this is fairly common with all fencing disciplines. You return to en guard position after every point.
