Use it as root stock and graft it with a scion from an apple variety like a Harrelson. Do another with a scion like a Seek no Further or a State Fair. The Harrelson will pollinate anything. It is the babydaddy of apple trees.

Regardless of fruit, Apple trees establish really strong fungal networks in your soil (that extend out about 30' in diameter from where they are at in the ground). Well worth having one (for the benefits to all other tress and woody plants).

This series is great and i know it will help me in the future as I've just planted my first germinated apple seed. Hopefully mine will be this big when they are this old. Don't think i will be able to plant them into the ground as fast as you have as i don't have a garden for them to go into yet. I started from this video but i have got back to the start to see how you got here. Its great to see and thanks for not stopping :D

A big thing you are forgetting is that you are growing a great root stock that you can graft any variety you wish to. We have a crab apple that we are grafting a number of regular varieties on to (because we tend to not use the crabapples). Apples are great to graft and you have some great starting trees.

If you do at some point I'd love to see how you go. I'm busy grafting atm and am eagerly anticipating spring when I can start to germinate seeds. We are an odd climate here in New Zealand, not tropical but not temperate either so it can be hit and miss with what will grow and thrive here. For instance our apricot doesn't get cold enough chills to flower/fruit where our peaches nectarines plums and apples do fairly well. We also are the right climate for feijoa, berry guava, chillean guava and kiwi obviously lol, though my trees are still young we are hoping for some good fruiting seasons in the coming years.

I'm enjoying this a lot. Last year I also sowed an appple tree and I'm trying to learn when to graft it and IF I should graft it (never grafted before, first Tree type I'm growing). Of course, I'm not taking the fact of it giving fruits as a guarantee, specially since It's an urban garden, but I'm definately keepin tabs. Waiting for the next update, sir.

One of the most straight forward and clear videos on apple trees/growth! Enjoyed this video a lot. By the way, your garden is beautiful! What other plants/trees you have in there? I do have a few questions: 1) What do you think of kaolin clay to ward off bugs and would you be using any fertilizers in your trees? 2) When do you transplant the seedlings into pots and do you put each seedling in a separate pot?

I am struggling with my apple tree. It is 7 months old and two feet tall. Is that too short? Also the horizontal branches stop growing. I have very short horizontal lateral branches and two taller stems. I saw a video about making small cuts in the stem to create better horizontal branching. How true is this?

Hi Rob. I've been following you all year. Great videos and Beautiful smile. My apple sappling is about 15 months old in a pot ( It's been outside all last Winter and it's now Aug. in S.C.) the base of it is crooked. Losing about 3 inches in hight. What can I do? The bend is bad. Planted it from seed and it has several branches and green. I'm surprised it made it in pretty good shape.

I need advice please. I planted an apple seed and 1 year later it looks like it’s growing great at top I get wee flowers then they fall off and the branch would spit and produce mini seeds like a dandelion. Is this normal and also the main stem is thinner than a skewer is this normal also? Thanks in advance x

my logic is that apples we buy tend to come from an orchard, which tend to grow edible apples for profit related reasons. Wouldn't the blossoms likely be fertilized by pollen from that same orchard? I don't know what I'm talking about but it seems right, right?
@RobBackyardGardenerr
@RobBackyardGardenerr 7 жыл бұрын
MrDylancarlson It is possible, but unlikely. I'd love to get some good apples off of one of them but for now it's exciting to watch them grow! Thanks for tuning in!
@annam3662

I am also thinking same as you. It is very likely it would be pollinated with another apple that is growing in orchard. I'm starting to grow seeds of pears right now and I'm just dreaming of having the tiny pears ive been eating in childhood. They were super tiny dwarf pear fruits , damn if I could grown even anything near them... That pear was so delicious, no shop pear can come close in taste. It was brought by my great grandfather from forest. Back then people used to take a bag of apples/pears with them to fields, when they were walking their cows for grazing. They ate apple, threw the core away into bushes.. then these seeds would just start a new tree here and there. Some of these wild tree species were real gem.

@RobBackyardGardenerr
@RobBackyardGardenerr 7 жыл бұрын
PeachKeki All apple trees need pollen from another apple variety in order to produce fruit. Because of this, the apples that were produced from the original blossoms will be that variety, but the seeds will be"offspring" of the 2 varieties. Sort of like humans. We need two to produce and although our children will be similar to us, they will be a blend of both parents. You never know... I could strike the mother lode with a newly discovered apple variety! LOL. Believe it or not, a lot of apple companies do this today - always looking for the next "big thang." 🍅👍

Yea, give it a go on one of your apple trees. You can also practice grafting on one of the branches and not sacrifice the whole tree lol. If you fail, you can try again on another branch. I grew one apple tree and it's about 3 years old. I love the look of it and I just let it grow. You can also grow the stone fruits like apricot, nectarine and peaches and they will be true.

Not on my trees but a good friend who is an avid grafter does and swears by it. It just keeps the bugs and germs out and seals any cuts. Here in New Zealand it is called a couple different names but I figured you'd know what I was meaning lol. It's grafting season here and I am busy getting scions onto my trees from historical trees that I will soon no longer have access to.
