I have a 4 month old Malinois, 2 Min pins, tons of free chickens in my back yard and 4 cats. As long and you socialize your dog with small animals at a young age they’ll have no problem being around each other. The cats literally cuddle with my malanois they love eachother.

I just found your channel, my 19 yr old son, took his own money and purchased a 5 month old GS from a bad situation to basically rescue this poor dog, who was chained up outside and never allowed indoors or proper outdoor shelter or socialization, this was in mid January in Chicago. Unfortunately she is anxious and very scared of strangers, we found a behaviorist and a trainer to help us train Athena, This dog is so sweet and fun, she is obsessed with playing fetch. She loves children. I thought she was a working line GS, now I’m convinced she is a BM. She is 60lbs, muscular and insanely fast, her body is aero dynamic, she looks like she can fly when she jumps, she’s so smart. Listens really well, except when she is stressed out and trying to hide, It is very hard to train her in the presence of people she does not know, so I can’t really take her to do agility training because she completely shuts down and hides around strangers. Trying to build up her self confidence, I’m going to devour your videos looking for ways to help this sweet girl!

To guy who asked how to effectively convince a positive ONLY trainer that balanced training is best, my heart goes out to you. This is one of the most frustrating things I work with. Just one example: 3-year-old pit mix has been at shelter for 2 years. Doesn’t get walks or training because she’s too f’ing strong for most of us and prongs and “choke” collars are not allowed at the shelter. I finally got permission to take her off shelter grounds to “train at a quiet park”. I did it so I could use the tools that would work for her. She would get so excited every time I came to pick her up to train. Why - because I was abusing her? No, because she was getting clear communication through the use of an appropriate collar. She learned to walk calmly and was adopted 4 months after I started working with her, AFTER TWO YEARS working with the shelter’s positive only trainer. My thoughts: do whatever you have to do to get through your time with that trainer and then move on to a more fair, effective training plan with your dog.

My first dog was a Rottweiler. I think, they are very different from Malinois, because they are very calm and "serious" dogs with low temperament. Rottweilers need (and love) regular obedience training and long walks, but compared with Dobermann or Malinois, even German Shepherd, they are like a rock compared to a whirlwind. In fact, my Rotti was a worse guardian dog than the Samoyed I own today, because he was scared of absolutely nothing. He didn't feel it was necessary to bark at strangers approaching the property. He was very protective of me though and wouldn't allow strangers to touch me. But he also understood not to harm people. For example he didn't want my mothers guests to shake my hand. So he placed himself in front of me and (no barking, no growling) pushed their hand away. He also protected my room against everybody, except my sister. When my grandma once just walked in, he gently grabbed her by the sleeve and simply stood there like an anchor.

I had big bone Dobermans before. They were perfect. Now I have a Malinois 3 month puppy, and I see in him a dedicated pet. So young yet his potential to be a super faithful pet.

Just now watching this. Still very good content. Regarding a mal and cats. We slowly over months have introduced and incorporated our 8wk Mal and three cats. Now Marz is 6mos and the cats are not a trigger to Marz at all. They eat together and two of our cats will seek Marz out. The third cat is more standoffish anyways and does not mess with the doggo much. Once Marz was let out in the back yard and one of the cats got out. Now we have a pen that we put the cats in the garden, so be out is not a bad thing but I was worried that Marz would chase the cat. And she did but not in attack, but as herding. We knew the Mom and pups were raised around chickens and the mom was not into harming them, but would often herd the hens. We lucked out because we didn’t not intentionally screen for compatibility. I think they will be cuddle buddies in another 6mos. Feed them together and show the Mal early that the cats are protected.

I realize this video is 3 years old. I am now subscribed. We have taken in a 2 year old female mali that was abandoned (our view at this point). She is amazing. this video in particular has provided a lot of great information for me to ensure that I am doing the right things for this dog. Setting up training evaluation (mostly for me) and making sure we understand how we can best manage the high drive breed needs over the long term. Thank you! She's adapting well to our sporting lab and Pyr mix dogs. Overall, I am very impressed with her attention and wow, energy for days!

There are differences even between the breeds. In deciding to get a second dog I looked at Border Collies and Malinois. Over the years I have owned many GSD's, including the working line. I work from home, walk them about 3 hours a day, train about an hour a day and use them for herding. Activities include obedience, scent work and heelwork to music freestyle. So on paper, I would be considered a reasonable candidate for these breeds. I often look after my sisters Border Collies and found them much more intense than my working shep. For instance: waiting for me to throw a ball. My shep will be watching me not the ball, eager but in a half sit. The collie will not take their eyes off the ball and if I do not instantly pick it up nudge or bring it closer. Both breeds will do a full day work/activity - but when you want to relax in the evening my shep will be happy to curl up next to me. The collie will still be bringing me balls - take these away and it is toys - take these and they constantly get up to pace. I cannot relax - because they do not. My friend is a dog trainer for the police and describes the difference between the GSD and Malinois in much the same way - the Mal has no off switch. She says both are equal in work, although the GSD can be slightly easier to train. I asked why use Malinois - her response - they are lighter and handlers are required to demonstrate they can carry the dog. It is easier for a woman or man with a slighter build.

I've been wanting a Mal or Dutch for about ten years, but I've never been in the position so I just watch videos and go to competitions.

I adopted a black Belgian malinois at one year of age, she had no prior training. She was free. She rescued kittens on our farm and became their "momma" , I then decided to get her a blue heeler puppy. They're best friends on first introduction. I've spent very little time training my dogs. Though we live on 30 acres they don't work. They just go and do what they want and are massive undestructive couch potatoes. Idk how I got so lucky to get two purebred working dogs that don't do any damage when not assigned tasks and for free because the original owners say they can't handle them. It's been a year with the mal and 4 months with the heeler and no problems what soever.

I’m getting my first Malinois in Nov. I’m in a tight knit psa club that helped me find one. I train pet dogs for a living. I STILL feel unprepared and nervous for this wee pup!!

I know I will never get a Malinois, but I enjoy watching them so much. I am 70. I've had several dogs, most of which have had dominant personalities but I'm aware enough that I'm not in the position to handle a dog that needs so much stimulation.

I got a DS/GSD (half and half) that was an "accident" according to the breeder. I am hoping to have the best traits of both breeds. I was surprised to hear Robert's comment, and truly hope to optimize the decision and training.

I have a saying: ENERGY HAS TO GO SOMEWHERE. If it isn't thru their FEET (walking, running jumping, digging) it will be thru their MOUTH (barking, whining, biting, chewing, etc).

My work schedule changed. New schedule makes it challenging to work my Mals as regularly as I use to. So I ordered a slatmill (K9 propelled treadmill). They are not cheap but is worth it. Now I can put them on the slatmill before I head out for work or when I get back late to help release some of the energy. One has to be creative in finding solutions to keep them healthy and happy. Thank you Robert for all you do.

We have a 4 year old Mal mix who is incredibly chill (she would much rather sleep on the couch than to train for hours). Her only real problem is that she has separation anxiety when we both leave.

I never feed my dogs in the morning .we go out and train, I train with food I train two of them together when I say Platz they stay there until I get the next command , so I can work with one at a time and when the training is over we run back to the house and they have breakfast and so do I

Thanks for the advise. I personally love cross breeds because they do not get so sick as thorough breds. I just yesterday bought a cross german shepherd and Belgium Malinois male puppy. Already hooked on and is by my side. Stops when I do, play with ball and cross through my legs. Brilliant dog!! Played hide and seek and he found me in one minute! I use to breed with German Shepherds in my young days. Especially need this dog as I just bought a plot 6000 square meters in Bathurst Eastern Cape, South Africa. It is rural with nothing on it. Going totally off grid. Protection and work. Thanks for the videos.

Every time I see anything about a mal i thank jesus christ that mine is mixed. I knew I wanted a pitbull and he was just beautiful completely jet black shiney sweet sweet puppy. I didnt care that he was mixed. I had heard of mals before but didnt bother to brush up before I bought him. Hes a year old now and I just discovered balanced training after being positive only my whole life I've had some small dogs and mostly rottweilers. Ive had a prong collar for about 2 weeks and wow what a difference. No more jumping and loose leash walking like pros. I was on the verge of considering rehoming him, your videos played a part in saving my dog. I'm ashamed I even considered considering it, hes a wonderful dog just needed more guidance. Hes gotten all of 4 pops of the prong.

I have my second Belgian Tervuren. They are great but so much work. I was not prepared for the intensity and willfulness the first time. Whew - fast learning curve! Two Belgian breeders told me, "Oh since you've had Shelties and Ridgebacks, you'll have no problem with a Belgian." WRONG!!! Not even close in temperament!!! It went smoother with my second puppy because I had experience and was prepared for the insanity of the first year. He's my shadow and friend - ❤❤❤. He's a lot of work but worth it.

A novice can definitely own high drive dogs. I adopted a 7 year old retired mal and an 8 week old gsd at the same time. I now have 2 gsd and 2 mals. It just takes consistent training, and you can never allow them to become dominant. My original mal is now 11 and is the best dog I've ever had.

I have a Belgian, rescued 1/2 Boxer 1/2 Pit, a Rott and a rescued Labradoodle. They are a handful but I live on over 17 acres in the country and am very hands on with everyone of them! And I am 64. You take time with each one individually and then all together!

Rescued a dog, thought it was a German shepherd mutt mixed with some small/mid sized dog that shrunk her and would mellow out the shepherd in her. Turns out she is mostly Belgian Malinois, then GSD, DS, and Australian cattle dog. Now I am taking this dog everywhere to keep her stimulated and she is super sweet to everyone. She relaxes at home and is affectionate. Love the dog, and want to take her on hikes. Only thing I don't like is I work a lot but thankfully I have family that'll keep her company during working hours.

How can I find out when the next one will happen? I unfortunately missed this and have some great questions about my Malinois in Schutzhund. Or, where is the best place to get on the "ask me anything" list? Thanks kindly

I have what I think is a cattle dog/mal mix. As a puppy, he was nice to everyone, people, kids, other dogs, but as he came into his own, he started displaying over the top protective behavior around my apartment building and with kids. At the dog park down the road, he’s an aggressive player but otherwise fun and energetic. It took me looking into this breed for me to understand his drive. Whether or not there is mal in there, I have insight into how to work with him

I’ve seen a lot of young Dobermans listed on Kijiii, similar to Craig’s List, lately and it breaks my heart and angers me. I know the bond they develop with their owners and how mine would be affected if I ever gave her up. Do people think a working breed dog, or any dog, comes trained? Yes, mine looks great when I have her out in public. But her behaviour didn’t happen overnight. I spend time training her every day without fail. Even with the training she has, I continue to work her on those skills to hone them and keep her sharp. All my Dobies have needed to be worked. People really need to do their homework before getting any dog. It will change your life and you either better be prepared for that or do not get a dog.

Yes I did, a young 5 month rescue girl,4 months ago, and I absolutely love, love loverher. So does my 16 yr old APBT. She is smart, happy hyper personality, eager for any new adventure, loving and is turning out to be the perfect dog I needed. I rescued her, but she's rescuing me. Thanks to you I actually was prepared to adopt her. I hope she lives as long as my 16 yr old pit whom she is cuddling with as I type this. What important do you place on seeing the mother and the father before you buy another dog or I’ve seen both mother and father mother and when I’ve seen either and I’ve noticed a subtle difference but I can honestly say I’ve noticed dramatic difference because I took a lot of time to find the right dog and went to a lot of breeders by recommendation reputation with the rep recommendation any thoughts

Another excellent video I get irritated by the "mal snobs" in the groups I belong to forget they once was a first time Malinois owner and its really sickening the way they act ppl asking legit questions that anyone doing their homework should ask and will attack these ppl instead of giving solid information about the dogs...those ppl "tattle tales" we call them Karen's and Kyle's they drive me crazy they are the ones who negative about prong and ecollar and crates and will claim "their dogs are perfect and have never chewed up anything" and we all know that's a lie unless by chance they got their dogs pretrained and older never in my life have I ever had a puppy that hasn't chewed something up my weimaraners were far more destructive than my mal really has....hey I commend you for being a stay at home dad ....I stay home for our Malinois and I've typically been stay at home for all my animals including the horses....you have helped me so much with our first mal who's working lines hes not what akc would actually consider full since has gsd in his blood lines he was bred by a cop for a number of reasons to be dual purpose dog with better health better off switch we absolutely love him he can go from bite work to sent work to being content chilling with us on the couch we are in love....thank you for all your amazing videos cause I truthfully wouldn't dare ask fb mal groups we also have a amazing trainer who is our k9 officer who knows mals and mal/gsd they import from Germany hes also a trainer for the department and works part time as a trainer for off leash k9 all the trainers at our location are cops or military with excellent backgrounds with k9s

Couple of summers ago a bloke (accidentally) killed his kelpie playing "throw ball". He thought the dog enjoyed it because it kept going. Dog died of dehydration/heart attack. Working with herding dogs(eg. koolie) you've got to call them in to give them a break; they'll keep going. "Red Dog" the movie came out; Working Dog Australia had to re-home 2,000. They were not looking forward to "Red Dog pt. 2" A lot of people didn't realize what they were taking on. In their first year Border Collies have a high "dumpage rate" (clocked in Wales as working 74 km a day. Huskies, 30km a day.) Taking a 'working dog' out for a long walk hoping to tire the dog won't work. The likelihood is the dog will get super fit and you'll get super exhausted. Fair leadership comes from benevolent dictatorship. Don't worry if your dog doesn't eat for a couple of days: in the wild the dog wouldn't eat for a couple of days; fasting helps the digestive system re-align; going hunting with the dogs we don't feed the dogs for a couple of days beforehand.

My kelpie cross was amazing boy was he smart, if there was nothing to do he slept all day but if it was time to do things he was on and never stopped.

Great to hear you say that these high drive dogs need so much more. My Border Collie will need at least 4 hours EVERY day. Out at 5am in the dark with a light collar on and a torch. It has to be done. I always say FAIR, FIRM and FUN are key to building a fantastic any respectful relationship with a working dog. Sorry I missed the live. When your puppy/dog arrives that is the time to start training. It's starting to work you and the relationship out. Not talking about high obedience training.

New to channel. Have you used a flirt pole with goofy? Have a GSD that loves tug and fetch with frisbee. Not sure if enough or more options would be beneficial.

I am going through and watching some of these older videos. I have enjoyed all of your videos that I have watched thus far. You are what I would call an old time trainer, who uses common sense and looks to the individual dog for what it needs in how to teach it. New trainers think there is one tool in the box and that is the treat/clicker combo pack. Not all dogs learn the same, a good trainer, listens to the dog. In my opinion. The Utopia trainers who think their way is the only way and every other way should be banned, are the ones who do the most damage to dogs as a rule. I have thought about getting a Malinois for the past 30 years, I have had Rottweilers for 44 years. I kept saying when I was ready to downsize, I would go with a Mal. I love a dog with some drive, I love a smart dog, a dog that thinks and also a dog that wants to work with it's person. When I am ready, I will be adding a female Malinois to my 2 male Rotti house.

Totally agree with the dictatorship- thanks for pointing this out. God help this country (USA). I have a puppy Maly named Arioch- he goes with me EVERYWHERE, and he IS my life! Because of this, he is very calm, considerate, and well behaved. I have had many dogs, and I must say I LOVE this dog! I've never seen an animal so affectionate- he actually HUGS our family members- I did not train this and am BLOWN away by the intelligence of this dog. These dogs ARE a whole different class, and I did my homework and was ready for the commitment. I can only hope and pray that others do the same when getting this type of dog!

? - 50/50 Doberman-Shepherd (mom purebred shepherd/dad purebred Doberman) @ 4.5 months old: He’s nipping at/chewing at/chomping at our hands. Very much in a playful way, and he’s at a peak in teething (losing baby teeth daily), but we need to curb the mouthing behavior stat. When he does it, I’ve been saying, “No” (which he normally understands & responds to well), take hand away, and immediately give one of his chew toys. Am I essentially rewarding the behavior we don’t want, without realizing it? By trading my hand for a chew toy? Cuz his urge to hand chew is not stopping, and that’s not typical for him with corrections, so I’m definitely doing something wrong. Just not sure what. Other techniques? Thoughts? Thank you!
