This is true for most bands, but I feel like Lorna Shore especially, they don't normally use their lyrics to convey a message, they use the lyrics as a conduit for the emotions the song is trying to convey. That's why he uses these almost archaic phrasings to stir up those dark, almost lovecraftian vibes of fear of the unknown and fear of what lurks beyond the veil.

I interpret the song as a tragedy, thematically. No glorification, simply describing a horrifying situation to be found in. The snarls at the end feel like the demons of hell receiving our unfortunate narrator, as sort of a final affirmation of the horrors depicted in the lyrics.

Agreed, and combined with melancholy acoustic bits . . . he might have been willing and accepting of it, but then he gets there and is not so happy, hence the expletive, and the "pig demons" start tearing him apart. Seems to me that not confessing his sins was a bad call. Many would say this is Satanic, but I don't know. It isn't exactly painting an attractive picture of that.
@devon9822
@devon9822 Жыл бұрын
From being a Christian all my life, I’ve had several people who are close to me disparage metal music for being “satanic”. It always made me feel partially guilty for listening to this music even though I like it so much. Only recently have I come to understand that just because I like this genre of music, doesn’t mean I’m praising satan or anything near it. I really feel like the newer generations need to make it understood that you don’t have to be a satanist to like metal music and that you shouldn’t feel bad about it.
@Meow-oo7yk
@Meow-oo7yk Жыл бұрын
I’m an ex Christian and now I guess would be considered a satanist. Basically I follow the ideals of the satanic temple, who are atheists and not satan worshipers at all. They basically just adopted the name “satanic temple” for publicity purposes and to contradict traditional teachings of the Hebrew religions. There’s a huge misconception that all “satanists” worship Satan when most satanists are actually just atheists with progressive ideologies. Either way, even when I was a Christian I loved this kind of music and so did most of my family, as devout baptist Christians. Deathcore does get so much heat especially from traditionalist Christians for being satanic or “devil worship” music. And it’s not just deathcore that gets attacked either, it’s just about any kind of metal or rock. Don’t feel bad about it, honestly if I were you and still a part of Christianity, I just wouldn’t tell anyone about your interest in deathcore. But I think it would be nice if there weren’t so many misconceptions about metal, I just wish more people were open minded of things outside their bubble. I think people get scared of the sound and look of things without actually taking the time to try and understand it. But you shouldn’t have to explain to people why you like a certain genre of music, nor should you feel bad about it. Honestly, when I was a Christian I wish I had a pastor like this dude 😂
@devon9822
@devon9822 Жыл бұрын
@@Meow-oo7yk I appreciate your words. I think if you’re an atheist, you should be that. Not a “satanist”. Satan has meant pretty much the same thing throughout time and the way that people try to make satan seem as not such a bad being in culture nowadays is something that can’t be supported by believers in and followers of God. I get it. I just can’t agree with that. I have experienced mostly the same thing that you have with metal music and Christianity. It’s truly a shame
@Meow-oo7yk
@Meow-oo7yk Жыл бұрын
@@devon9822 Well the satanic temple doesn’t think satan is a good figure at all nor do we worship such a figure. In the case if satan were to be a real being, we would never support his ideals or follow him. The satanic temple just uses the word “satan” for publicity in the media in order to get their message out to a lot of people. “The Mission Of The Satanic Temple Is To Encourage Benevolence And Empathy, Reject Tyrannical Authority, Advocate Practical Common Sense, Oppose Injustice, And Undertake Noble Pursuits.” They’ve actually helped a lot of victims who were stuck in abusive situations, as well as help adults and children who are victims of sexual assault. I completely understand where you’re coming from though, the “satanic temple” doesn’t really sound too great but I promise our intentions are anything but evil. The group of satanists that you gotta watch out for are those who identify with the church of satan, they’re actual satan worshipers. I don’t really call myself a satanist nor do I even really call myself an atheist because part of me still believes in higher beings, especially because I’ve had personal experiences with entities before throughout my whole life, so I’m not completely atheist. But I do believe in the mission of the satanic temple and what they are doing to be a good thing. Anyway, just keep your head up, we all have our differences and no one has to like the same things or live their lives the same way. One thing I actually like a lot about deathcore is that it has some biblically accurate lyrics and actually represents certain stories in the Bible sometimes, which is super cool. I think if people of the church would just take a minute to understand that then they wouldn’t think it’s so bad.

I too have had the same life experiences… the way Ive always explained it is I know my power over darkness,which Is why I don’t fear it…. I also once heard someone explain how if the voice of God is described as “thunder” in the Bible , what makes us automatically associate Heavy vocals with satan? ..Also a band like Lorna shore is KEY for proving that not all deathcore bands only talk about “evil”, in a sense of praising it, but more so the evils we face everyday in our human experience….
@rysirion_9102
@rysirion_9102 Жыл бұрын
So true, especially since most bands barely have anything to do with religious or satanic topics. Their descriptions might definitely be considered a little biblical or apocalyptic, but that's rather to better portray the world they want to show in their songs. Metal mostly consists of so many emotions that aren't even supposed to be taken literally. If some part of me wants to completely rip the head off of someone because they did something really bad to me, does that make me a bad person? As long as I don't proceed with these actions, no it doesn't. And metal has always been my way of coping with my emotions, especially things like this song is just an instant relief and calmer for me, no matter how stressed or angry I am in that situation.
@Lingboysc2
@Lingboysc2 3 жыл бұрын
I think you can't take metal lyrics literally. You have to read them as a story or a form of art. Like horror movies, they're not endorsing the evils and such that they portray, it's more of a dark story. Many of the metal musicians and fans that I know are the most full of life, loving people. It was nice to hear your take on it, much love!

I don't agree that this song "romanticizes" death, hell or damnation. Sure, some bands in the genre might actually hold that view legitimately, but with Deathcore, this topic is usually explored as a means of storytelling, sort of like writing from the persective of another individual, while some bands only use the topic to present some shock value into their lyrics.

Interesting point, and something that I have pondered - why does so much explicitly Christian rock & metal kinda suck? The problem, IMO, is that artists are often preaching and the song quality comes a distant second. A lot of political artists have exactly the same problem: crowbar-ing overbearing lyrical delivery into work that needs a different touch. The artist needs to be a bona fide genius to make this work properly, and, well, there aren't many of those. Not saying that artists can't be religious or political, just that 'preaching' and 'good songs' are usually mutually exclusive. FWIW I'm an atheist so no skin in this game. :) Christian metal is an interesting field as whole sections of the art form seems to be - stylistically - difficult to square with traditional 'Christian' messaging! EDIT: Having grown up in the 70s & 80s I well remember the 'satanic panic' and mainstream US Christianity's inability to discern the difference between using demonic imagery in a fictional setting and actual devil worship. So yeah. Christian metal has an uphill struggle against it's own community too. So... do they want to please their pastors or write objectively 'better' (to an outsider) music? Tough call.

the only thing about this though is that it teeters on the line of black metal, which is a genre based on anti-Christian beliefs and messages. Deathcore isn't quite on that level, but it pushes the boundaries

Your analysis of the lyrics is interesting to me since it's quite literal interpretation of the lyrics like it's written as genuine thoughts of the person who wrote them. Like they are accepting damnation without regrets and writing a song about it.. And while I agree that the dark aspects like hell, Satan, demons, monsters etc. are pretty much the metal standard I feel like it's simply the image and traditon, and as such fiction. They are horror stories more than anything.

I'll hold onto feeling until my final breath escapes Gazing upon this world until it fades Fall with me into the other night We can go beyond the horizon again Fall with me until we're out of time Let the current swallow These whispers keep clawing Your mind is dissolving light Sink while you bathe in hallucination Accept this descent into the night, releasing your grasp to Induce separation, plunged into the shadows Lost in sensation, we're free-falling down into the ever black Can you feel it? These pins and needles Trapped in sеnsation, see what you have found here You fеll into the dark Fell into the dark Release your grip and face the tide, accepting this damnation Relinquish flesh temptation of the body and soul The ebb and the flow, nothing confessed Put me to rest Azrael, guiding me beyond the veil Obitual, free me from this mortal shell Enter into the darkest night, I will sink where I lie Through the sands of time, through the angel's eye My final breath Swallowed by the womb of death Swallowed by the womb of death Whispers are clawing Your mind is dissolving light Enter the void and fall with me Enter the void, fall Release your grip and face the tide accepting this damnation Relinquish flesh temptation of the body and soul The ebb and the flow, nothing confessed Put me to rest Azrael, guiding me beyond the veil Obitual, free me from this mortal shell Enter into the darkest night, I will sink where I lie Through the sands of time, through the angel's eye My final breath Swallowed by the womb of death Swallowed by the womb of death Swallowed by the womb of death Sink while you bathe in hallucination My final breath Swallowed by the womb of death As you pass through the fucking gate Descending towards the end faster

As a Christian that is a genuine Lorna Shore fan, I had a very similar interpretation to the lyrics. However, I don't think that it's about Will. I took it as just a story. The subject on the song has died and has realized that they are not passing on to Heaven, but there is no changing that now. Thus they are forced to become accepting of their fate. I don't think that Will Ramos (the vocalist) is trying glorify evil. I think that he is just telling a story, as many metal vocalist are doing in their songs.

Guage- (sorry if it’s misspelled)- dang, haven’t seen you this “into” the songwriting of a song before. This song caught me off guard because I was expecting pretty normal chugs and a few riffs but they really WROTE something musical. The contrast throughout, the false and true breakdowns, knowing when to lead us on, the solo, the layering, the sheer instrumental/vocal performance...what a great song! Inyereating point when you say you forget you like deathcore and only listen every so often. To me, there’s so much stale deathcore out there that when I come back to it, it all sounds awesome. I mean who doesn’t just something super heavy. When I listen to lots, it get boring and repetitive. I feel the “next wave” of deathcore is starting to implement melodic ideas into the formula which adds a nice variety to the genre (IMO). Here are a few (more recent releases) groups I really enjoy that you might like to check out- Mental Cruelty, Brand of Sacrifice, Within the Ruins, Shadow of Intent, Abiotic, and Left to Suffer...and my absolute fav- Slice the Cake- Odyssey to the Gallows (they’re older) I don’t listen to much deathcore, so I’m sure there’s many more! Hope people share their favs!
