The second movie suffers from significant studio interference, BUT: -It's directed by Irvin Kirshner (Empire Strikes Back) -It's written by Frank Miller (Daredevil, 300, Sin City) -It features master animator Phil Tippet's last use of stop-motion before switching to CG for J-Park. It's worth seeing. The third one's mostly forgettable.

"You're fired!" "Thank you." Two best lines in film history. When I was watching this in the theater we didn't know what could be done in this moment. Fortunately the company President knew exactly what to do. That's why he's President. The "thank you" was so perfect.

Murphy for his short time as a person was a really likeable guy and family man. When he first peers his human eye through the broken visor, showed the audience that his human side was kicking back in. My favorite part of the movie.

@Kainlarsen My only surviving aunt today was married to an O'Banion. (RIP) Strong Christians. Hard workers. Good people. In the 1970s, environmentalists were blocking their worksite in protest. They scooped up a few of them with a bulldozer and dropped them on top of a building, then continued their work. He was also a golden glove boxer. Arm wrestled me as a kid and even when I was in the military, I still could not beat him in arm wrestling when he was well into his late 60s with cancer. I will respect Irishmen to the day I die.

18:29 Because director Paul Verhoeven is Dutch and director of photography Jost Vocano is German, they didn't realize what an offensive pejorative "bitch" is in the English language, and so while directing this scene, they kept referring to and addressing the two actresses "bitches," and Kurtwood Smith and Miguel Ferrer were just cracking up.

A tiny detail that I love is that Robocop does read the Miranda Rights as they're actually written. Movies always say "can and will be used against you" when there is no "and will." Love that this one gets it right

There's also a little detail at the exploding gas station when the criminal guy walks up with his submachinegun and makes fun of the clerk. That specific gun is an "open bolt" firearm which means the chamber is open when it's ready to fire. It pushes the bullet up from the top of the magazine into the chamber, closes, fires it, and then returns to being open again, per bullet. A lot of action movies don't show those types with the bolt open while the actor is walking around supposedly ready to fire. This one does and, what's more, you can see the brass of the next bullet in the bottom, ready to go. As you can imagine, I enjoy catching these brilliant little details that someone on the set made sure to do. Great stuff.
@TheOtherGuys2
@TheOtherGuys2 Жыл бұрын
Indeed, but it does fall into the other movie error regarding the Miranda Rights: the rights are not read to someone as they're being arrested, they're read when an arrested person is being questioned at the station. Movies always act like for some reason it's important to tell a criminal that they have the right to an attorney in the middle of the street, or... in a cocaine packaging plant.
@KrazzeeKane
@KrazzeeKane Жыл бұрын
I have absolutely had the "and will" part read to me in real life by a cop, it absolutely 100% was on the card he read, as I saw it. There are also many videos of actual police interrogations online, and when reading the Miranda rights they will often say, "can and will be used against you", hell I just heard it in a video yesterday. So it is not just in movies, it is absolutely said in real life as well

LOVE THIS MOVIE!! Before Peter Weller was cast as the titular character, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Armand Assante, Michael Ironside, Rutger Hauer, Sylvester Stallone, and Tom Berenger were considered. Weller lost 3 lbs a day from wearing the suit, and the effects team built an AC unit inside the suit to cool him down and prevent him from passing out. It was 110° degrees in Dallas Texas where they were filming. The stop motion animation effects were done by Oscar Winning VFX artist Phil Tippett whom did VFX for Star Wars, JURASSIC PARK and Starship Troopers. The film was a box office and critical success, making $60 million dollars against a $13 million dollar budget.

@@RuntotheMovies Another fun fact: In the full Robocop costume, Peter Weller couldn't fit in the driver's seat. That's why in every scene when he gets out of the car, such as the scene at the end where he shoots ED-209, Peter is only wearing the top half of the costume. Since it's hidden by the car, below the waist he's just wearing shorts.

AT-ST's were in fact, commonly referred to as "chicken walkers" during production on ESB and ROTJ. Phil Tippet animated the walkers in Star Wars as well as ED 209. The actual inspiration for ED-209's design was the "Glaug" boss battle-pod mech from the anime "Macross" (1982) seen in the US as "Robotech" (1985)

I *definitely* like my music a little out of the ordinary. I am a fan of Brian Eno and the Talking Heads, but I've never heard this! I love how their styles come together here: the rhythmic, make-you-want-to-dance influence of Byrne, accompanied by the more experimental, looping, layered qualities that you often hear from Eno. He is almost unrecognizable under all the alien makeup he is wearing. Also, the cameo of the crazy guy with the long hair being interviewed on TV was Eddie Van Halen.

For the ED-209 "malfunction" scene in the board room, the content advisor from the studio kept saying that the shooting was too bloody for the movie ratings board. Every time he did, the director asked for bigger blood packets from the FX department. In the end they were using zip-loc sandwich bags for the blood packets on the squibs, and the advisor stopped talking to Verhoeven.

One reason this movie is incredible is its high level satire of corporatocracies. Its criticism of the military industrial complex, other forms of corporate welfare, gentrification, heartless and psychopathic business values, police suppression of the poor instead of addressing the causes of poverty, promoting technology that industry profits from at taxpayers' expense, infotainment, privatization, commercialism, consumerism, business propaganda, etc. It's not just an action movie with an amazing musical score, acting, special effects, set design, etc. With appreciation of its accurate satire, the movie deserves a 10 out of 10. Robocop is one of my top five favorite movies for several reasons.

Emil's death was great, especially since when hit by the car he literally just SPLASHED everywhere... But my favorite "death" in the movie was the chicken walker outside the OCP building after Murphy blew it up: the legs staggering a couple of steps then toppling over and the little death spasm of the one foot part. So glad you ladies noticed and appreciated that bit, so many reactors seem to miss it, or at least it isn't shown or commented on in many reactions.

One of you said that it looked like Murphy's face skin stretched on a robot... That EXACTLY what Robocop was (of course it was Murphy's brain and a few other chunks inside) to make him seem more like a 'human' for the people to accept him as law enforcement. That's why shooting him in the face didn't really matter much, except in a 'larger numbers' of bullets case.

Ah I see. That makes sense. Kinda creepy when you think about it though. Like, wouldn't the skin get old and zombie looking? Or if he did get shot in the face, do they replace the skin? It couldn't heal could it? 😬

@@toy4871 that's kinda the point of cyborgs. The living tissue does heal. Robocop and the Terminator are exact opposites but both still cyborgs. The living tissue heals which additionally helps them pass for human.

Great review! ❤ (Many artists have sampled quotes out of this movie to add to their music. Minus The Bear sampled the hell out of Starship Troopers in their debit album. Since you are a RHPS addict like me, Hannah, I imagine you dig the connections music has with movies as much as I do, so you may find it to be worth checking out sometime.) I loved how you both laughed throughout like I did when I first saw it. The director knows comedy in the best subtle way. He is a comedy master because most don't see his movies as parodies or comedies when they are nothing but comedy gold. Brilliant. Best of love to all of you.❤

Robocop's Peter Weller struggled to get the robot movements right and it did not look good. The Director was very frustrated and they actually stopped shooting for a couple of days to reassess. Then they called back a mime that had been a consultant and he adjusted Peters movements and the film was saved.
