There was an old trick that if you were followed by wolves far from home, they would track you until you became exhausted... but instead, if you showed them blood (wolves that are desperate enough to hunt humans are almost certainly pretty hungry), they would rush you and give yo a chance to fight while you still had some strength. A VERY risky strategy, but marginally better than having them rush you when you were weak from exhaustion!

Dutch was originally supposed to win that hand to hand fight with the Predator, but Arnold thought that didn't make sense. He said "I can't beat him. He's a monster. I'm just a man." So it was rewritten with Dutch getting his ass handed to him. I really respected that when I read it because, at that time, there were some action movie stars (and one in particular) whose egos would never tolerate losing a fight on scene.

I noticed some confusion on Predators actions...he's a Hunter, like a trophy Hunter , he believes in honor and refuses to fight non armed non warriors (why he didn't fight the unarmed woman). In the end he wanted to confront Arnold "man to man" without any weapons as he saw him as a worthy opponent. I always found it funny he repeats what the hell are you back to Arnold...since we're the aliens to the Predator 😅
@colemannee9898
@colemannee9898 Жыл бұрын
Actually, I don't think the Predator's repetitions have any particular meaning to him. Like human hunters, he imitates the sounds of his prey to attract them, like how duck hunters use duck calls, turkey hunters use turkey calls, etc. He repeated Mack's "any time" to get Dylan's attention. His evil laugh at the end is also a repetition of Billy's laugh earlier in the movie.

@@colemannee9898 True. But I would also think that being so technologically advanced, the Predators' computer systems can analyze and construct an alien language easier than we could. A fun backstory on the character who is fixated on kitty jokes: During the shoot of the movie, the actor was supposed to wear a bright red beret. It was the "quirk" so to speak to set him apart from the team. Kind of like the one who is always shaving. He complained that the red beret made no se4nse in the context of a jungle and would have him stand out while trying to be stealthy. The people in charge agreed and instead gave him the role of the one who made tasteless jokes instead. Source: director commentary on one of the Predator DVD sets.

Something that people don’t realise, the trap at the end is improvised. The actual trap is a twine draped between two logs that Dutch has tied spikes to. The idea is the victim trips the twine which pulls them up into the spikes. The log is the counterbalance, which should be approximately twice the weight of the victim in order to have the strength to pull the victim up. Because the Predator saw the spikes, it decided to go around, unwittingly putting itself underneath the counterbalance. As soon as Dutch realises the proximity, he thinks fast and triggers the trap, the twine gets pulled up between the logs as planned, and the counterbalance log drops down. The scene where Dutch fires the explosive arrow and the Predator starts shooting in all directions is the reverse of what happened earlier on when the Predator killed Blaine and the squad tear the forest down. They couldn’t see what they were shooting at, so they just shot at everything and hope to hit something. He used the Predator’s own tactics against it. When Dillon says: “what are you gonna use next, cheese?”, Dutch literally does that… he becomes the “cheese” to bait the Predator.

The mud is clay which is good insulator (that's why it's used for making ovens and kilns), and it's insulating properties are supposedly why it masks Dutch's infrared signature from the Predator (though in reality, that wouldn't work). I read the novel, and it may have had a better rationalization, but I can't remember. The two things I do remember from the novel are that the Predator was a shape shifter rather than invisible, and when Dutch finds the Predator's ship, he sees human skins next to the ship stretched on upright frames with the still attached scalps flapping in the wind.

Predators leave skinned victims to intimidate other potential victims. The skinned ones are also usually ones they considered easy prey I mean Stranger Things is inspired by 80s movies. Apparently before S2 came out, the Duffers did say it was an elaborate prequel to Predator, mentioning the soldier, but I’m pretty sure that was more of a joke. Oh my god, I didn’t realize there was more subtle references in Stranger Things! A Rick Shaefer gets mentioned, Arnold’s character is Dutch Shaefer, the town of Hawkins, Hawkins is the first of the team to be killed by the Predator! The effectiveness of the mud as a heat cover has been movie-fied. It would very quickly warm up. Maybe it worked better the first time because Dutch was just in the cold water, but after that, no way.

If i just say their "words" out of the blue....they look at me, sometimes, unsure of what to do. I dont know what I'm saying to them, but I do know that certain sounds and words elicit specific reactions from them. In fact, to most dog owners, just the HUMAN word "walk" or "treat" elicits a very specific reaction from their dog. I get the impression that the predator is so smart, it can hear our sounds and realize that certain "sounds" elicit a reaction. Fun bit of trivia, the eyes of the Predator that you see when he removes his mask are the actual eyes of the actor (albeit with contacts) underneath the prosthetics. After several facial designs and attempts, special effects master Stan Winston felt that leaving the actors actual facial features around the eyes gave the Predators face the final touch of menace and realism that brought the rest of the effects to life.

My "fan theory" for why the Predator can't see Dutch when he is covered in mud. The helmet actually doesn't enhance the creatures vision, but acts more like a filter. When we see the helmet get taken off, the Predators vision changes to ... full InfraRed (i guess). I think the reason the mud hid Dutch is because the Predators helmet is designed to filter out the ambient heat of the jungle - which you can see when he takes it off and everything is shown as roughly the same temperature - and it couldn't distinguish the mud on Dutch from the mud of the surrounding area.

UHM acksually, the m134 minigun is, in fact, the same exact firearm IN T2. The weapon itself was modified to have an RPM of 'only' 1250, which meant it would go through the available ammunition (550 rounds) in around 25 seconds. A real minigun requires a large power supply and is thus NOT man portable.

12:14 You are right, machine gun barrels do get hot. That’s why Gatling guns have six or more barrels. It rotates between them, so that each barrel can cool down before it fires again. Also, the spinning of the barrels helps dissipate heat.

@@Tori14537 I mean you still wouldn't wanna touch it after you've fired that many rounds, but the heat dissipates enough where the barrel doesn't melt. It's not a good idea to fire that long and it would be extremely heavy to carry that many rounds so that part requires you to suspend belief a little bit because he was running through the woods with that thing. It fires 2000-6000 rounds per minute and he held fire for about 15 seconds so i'd say probably 400 to 500 rounds were expended in that general direction.

At the beginning it is all about how skilled this team is at their jobs. Billy is "elite" tracker and survivalist... he knows how to survive in the wild, and yes what vines to drink from... And then they get to the camp, and you see they can plan and execute an attack taking out the enemy... but when $#!^ gets weird they are not fearless, they still do their jobs but you can tell they are worried. Hannah's face when the skinned guys are found... first she has this "blank smiley" then hers eyes... The number of times one of both of you just sat there with your mouth hanging open, silent, and sort of... blank, was priceless. The "first aid" scene... Tori goes "what on earth is that?" and I'm thinking "wrong planet." Billy draws first blood, on himself, to deny it to the predator. Safety note, if you are ever falling into water from a height, try to land vertical, you break the water surface... a bit like a needle and suffer less harm, I still wouldn't do it like Arnie did but... The "cold: mud blocking the sight is... hard to believe... says the guy watching an Alien Predator hunt a gut in the jungle. I do feel that in the 80s/90s there was a bit more suspension of disbelief in movies we didn't go "that doesn't make sense" as often, we just accepted it was a movie and enjoyed. Sorry, long babble.

He actually did ask Arnold the same question- "What the h* are you?" He is intelligent and prolly knows our language. The reason why he asked is that he isn't sure what Arnold is, cause he was invisible at one point. Humans can't do that! Remember, despite his thermal vision, his eyesight just isn't any good in this atmosphere, so he can't see anything else other than form and heat signature and outlines. He thinks he's human, but he's not sure- and now Arnold is standing over him- having won the fight. Humans are lower-level creatures- they're not supposed to triumph!? They're prey! So yeah- he is asking him - "What the h* are you!?"

Imagine how freaked out they'd have been if they saw their buddy hanging up there in the tree. They'd instantly know it was a monster that was hunting them. Fun fact, the mud actually did lower Arnold's body temperature a couple degrees, especially when wet. He was shivering much of the time later in the day and they had a really hard time keeping him warm. Also, Van Damme played the original creature but the costume was terrible and hot and he was too short. Him quitting basically saved the film because the creature ended up being way better, AKA a 7'2" monster man with mandibles...created by the great Stan Winston and James Cameron actually gave him the idea to give it that face. For the cloaking effect, the creature was a red suit they'd later remove with Chroma Key and by filming the same shot without the actor but with a much wider lens, they could fill in the area where the creature was. Sometimes it looks odd but other times it looks amazing. I think now they only use CGI and it just ends up looking bad. And the Hawkins actor actually wrote Lethal Weapon, the director directed Die Hard. You can see why it's so action packed. Imagine trying to sell this film to a studio..it would be such a hard sell and so easy to totally botch, but they made it work.

Arnold told a funny story about this in his autobiography: one punch at the end of the movie thrown by predator actor Kevin Peter Hall did hit Arnold in the face and his nose bled. This was on camera (and seen in the movie) but being a good sport he didn't yell cut and pushed through it. Kevin always hung out with him for lunch but he began to avoid him. When Arnold confronted him to ask what his deal was, he told him he was afraid Arnold was gonna kick his ass because of that punch lol He was not mad and understood he couldn't see very well.

Jean Claude Van Damme was the original predator. But, the original costume was more like a giant bug looking thing with a harpoon gun as one hand. It was so awkward and uncomfortable that Van Damme quit. He also had problems with the director. The Predator was redesigned into what we see and Keven Peter Hall was cast. He’s much taller than Arnold. He also plays the helicopter pilot at the end of the movie.

A lot of people will point out that this was directed by John McTiernan, who also directed "Die Hard", but I would point out another great film directed by McTiernan is "The Hunt for Red October". It has Sean Connery playing a Soviet submarine captain and Alec Baldwin as a CIA agent who is assigned to locate him. Another action film I recommend from that era that I hardly see anyone react to is "Backdraft", directed by Ron Howard. Kurt Russell and William Baldwin play estranged brothers in the Chicago fire department and Robert de Niro plays a fire investigator looking for an arsonist. It's great because all the fire in the film is REAL! No CG!

GET TO DA CHOPPA!!! LOVE THIS MOVIE!! MY #1 Favorite Arnold Schwarzenegger film! Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie, but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit, which looked like a lizard insect hybrid. He even wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, was cast as the titular character, as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch, being 7'2". The Predator Suit was designed and created by Oscar Winning VFX company Stan Winston Studios, whom later return to the franchise for PREDATOR 2 in 1990. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches, like Spielberg and Ford on Raiders Of The Lost Ark. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed, but couldn't eat any hot meals due to the heatwave in Mexico, so they ate protein bars instead. It was 110° in the shade while it was 42° at night. It rained for 2 weeks, making filming even more difficult. The stuntman who falls off the cliff and lands in the water blew out his kneecap. Shane Black, Hawkins, had rewritten the action scenes for the film. He even wrote the script to Lethal Weapon, Lethal Weapon 2, The Last Boy Scout, Last Action Hero, The Long Kiss Goodnight, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and Iron Man 3, which he would directed as well. He also directed and co-wrote THE PREDATOR in 2018. It was a box office success, making $100 million dollars ($460 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget. It was nominated for Best Visual Effects, but lost to InnerSpace. It's considered to be one of the best Sci-fi Action movies ever made.
