A surprise to be sure - but a welcome one! RoboCop Rogue City isn't just an excellent shooter, it's one of the most accomplished uses of Unreal Engine 5 we've seen so far on consoles, with the full suite of UE5 features in effect: Lumen, Nanite and Virtual Shadow Maps. Join Oliver Mackenzie for the breakdown on how the technologies are deployed on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.

Yeah, you're also in and out of this thing in around 8-10 hours. It's fun but ultimately not the deepest experience so it's somewhat brief campaign (brief by today's standards) helps it not out stay it's welcome. I paid 36 bucks for it, enjoyed it while I was playing it and will probably never come back to it but I'm fine with it. I miss games like this, they remind of mid budget stuff you'd grab at a rental store in the early 2000's for the PS2.

Its bizarre, it was always implied that UE5 would make it easier for smaller devs to achieve AAA graphical quality, yet its the AAA struggling with it. I wonder why that is? I wonder if they are too reliant on their old workflows rather than adapting to how UE5 is designed to be used?

As someone who grew tired of Unreal 4 and all it's problem, I was very concerned about Unreal 5. I've been playing Robocop and I'm blown away of the insane amount of detail and geometry everywhere you look. Especially in the second map.. the Mill. The terrain and rocks is something of a quality I've never seen before. It looks absurd and assets that could very well be used in The Mandalorian. The advantages of unlimited poly count of nanite really shines in this game and if this is what a small AA studio can do.. imagine a high budget AAA making full use of the engine. The game is great by the way.

I'd be interested in seeing DF cover The Talos Principle 2. It's the first UE5 game I've played and I was absolutely blown away at the rendering. I was particularly impressed by how screen space reflections aren't nearly as terrible as they typically are due to the same reason stated in this video. The biggest issue I've seen is weird ghosting particularly with high contrast moving objects, though, which is rather distracting and as far as I can tell from some searching is a side effect of one of the UE5 technologies.

Yeah, the absence of Talos Principle 2 seems pretty glaring. I understand that as a puzzle game with no combat, it's not stressing the engine to the utmost in some respects. But it's a genuinely very good looking, polished UE5 game. I think it makes sense for it to be part of the conversation about early UE5 games - as it has been on some other channels.

I noticed very similar with the lighting and shadows on PC, including the lighting and shadow engines having some struggle in certain situations. One big one for me was in an office, with shades/blinds with a higher light source, causing the light and shadows looking like a pointillist painting in motion. It only existed in these instances, though. Most of the time, I'd see the slight shimmer on wall surfaces, like shown above. Though I love the game's attention to detail for the world, and lore being adapted. The talking cut scenes have a weird depth of field effect being applied, which pixelates as it tries to soften the background image behind characters. I was running the game on an AMD Threadripper 2920x paired with an XFX Speedster Merc310 RX 7900 XTX at 4K60. Teyon did a fantastic job, outside of the Matrix Demo that was on consoles. As a fan of the Robocop lore and world, I loved the game, definitely in my top 3 of this year.

What are these AAA studios doing with their multi-million budgets, when a AA developer is the one to actually get it done? I’ve really enjoyed my time with this game. I am surprised a couple issues that annoy me on the PS5 weren’t brought up like texture pop-in, and rough cutscene transitions though.

Not just one, but two - Croteam built Talos Principle 2 on UE5 using (I'm pretty sure) the same feature levels (software lumen, virtual shadow maps, nanite, etc) and it's another game with visuals that you'd previously only expect to see from a AAA studio at peak performance (they occasionally impress us - see Doom Eternal etc) just a few short years ago. UE5 ain't perfect, but by gum it gives mid-sized developers some real flexibility and options without, apparently, being too much of a nightmare to deal with.

@@kurtreynolds7211 I love the game... I've "platinumed" the game on the launch week, and I'm still playing just for the fun... But there's stuff here that needs a better look to see if can be improved polish wise... The pop in is less intrusive on performance mode... But on quality its bad... Too distracting... The recent patch fixed a couple glitches though... Like some costumes not triggering properly... Dialogue trees errors and stuff like that... The thing that bothers me the most is the pop in... Sometimes you look at a wall and see the detail "building" while you look around... On quality mode at least... Same on costumes building detail during dialogue... every camera cut you can see the image building in the buffer... It's not normal... FSR causes that. I know that's not a practical solution but you either have to play the game at bative resolution or get an RTX card that supports DLSS. Unfortunately for AMD, FSR is just inferior and for the last year they haven't done much to improve image quality

DLSS,FSR,XESS all sparkle on the roads, TSR at 80-100% looks the best for those specific road wet scenes, but it also has break up in other areas., very hit or miss when playing the game on any ofthe upscalers, DLSS doesnt automatically win here like usual when it comes to wet roads.
