I don't understand why shader pre-compilation is not just a built-in feature on Unreal at this point. The plague of shader stutter on that engine is widespread and it's infuriating that it's up to the devs to implement their own pre-compilation system, which most just don't bother with.
@BurritoKingdom
@BurritoKingdom 8 ай бұрын
It is a built in feature of UE5. It's just not enabled by default. It's the other stutter issue that unreal always had issues with, even on consoles, loading stutters that is still messed up. Unreal has loading issues since 3, maybe even before, they're either not using the CPU correctly, or never implemented read speeds faster than HDDs.

Sigh. It's not a damn checkbox, its because it doesn't actually know what shaders (as the GPU sees them, not the engine) you will use because they are dynamically driven. Precaching is basically telling the engine everything you're going to do in the game, which obviously depends on the game. Could they fix it so that it can just figure it out? Maybe: but that both breaks all the existing work people have done, makes them use a new workflow, and makes it less flexible. Instead you should be complaining to GPU developers about *still* not providing a shader module/linking system and bytecode targets which would massively reduce or eliminate the CPU time needed to get shaders into the GPU.
@MechAdv

Lies of P makes me wait 30-45 seconds before it loads the opening titles to compile shaders, and that game has never stuttered once that I’ve been able to notice. I feel like most DEVs are simply ignorant of proper optimization of Unreal. Atomic Heart runs great too.
@YuriMomoiro
@YuriMomoiro 8 ай бұрын
@@SimonBuchanNz Other engines already do it: detecting and compiling all relevant variants of the shaders. And I am pretty sure it can be done without breaking any workflow. While adding some extra precise controls would be great as well. GPUs come with their own shader compilers, GPU specific optimizations done to the shader bytecodes is the reason they can get extra fast, I do not see any reason to sacrifice that when it would be relatively simple to compile a spir-v representation of all the shader variants present in the project(and being used). Then letting the gpu drivers taking care of it on first launch. Also this keeps graphics API inter-compatibility as well.

As a 4090 owner, i feel like TSR beats even DLSS in UE5 games and tech demos that I have tried (many). As in it generally has a sharper image, DLSS does generally have a little bit less artifacting though but the image is too soft and blurry for me. FSR on the other hand, while not as soft looking as DLSS, has noticably more artifacting than both TSR and DLSS. Btw TSR has 3 quality levels, sg.AntiAliasingQuality 1 to 3, with 3 being the best looking mode by far. But this increases TSR's computation cost by a lot, which is why I think consoles probably use level 1 or 2 and or a custom mode (there are many more variables for tweaking).

I have no idea if this is something that possible, but i think it would be cool if there was some way that hardware RT could be use to supplement software lumen instead of replace it. I think this would be a huge win for AMD, and lower end Nvidia cards. The lower end or older Nvidia cards are in a tough spot because their raster performance is a bit weak, and they don't have enough RT cores to make running hardware RT practical. For AMD, their cards excel in raster, but don't have much dedicated RT hardware. Depending on the card and the games if the RT workload could be variable distributed between software and hardware, there are probably situations where you could increase performance and quality.

Console games struggling to hit anything higher than 1080p in 2023 is a bit of joke territory, and even so performance is unstable as well. Jusant and Talos Principle 2 can have some significant frame drops on my RTX 3080 though (they usually take ~80% GPU usage running at a stable 60 FPS at 1440p maximum settings + DLSS). For Jusant it's in the Chapter 5 and it drops to ~40fps, and for Talos Principle 2 it is whenever I run into a lot of trees that can pull slow the game to as low as ~35 FPS.

POINT : Movie's and TV shows cheat with their lighting all the time they use reflector and refractors and defusers to move light to places it shouldn't be so actor's faces are visible and the like or they place lights to make dramatic pools of darkness. So I think the things like overly dark shadows under plants really doesn't bother me in the slightest and in some cases looks way better than when it is rendered accurately when can make something look a bit plastic. Its like shiny wet tarmac it might actually look like a shiny surface in reality too but in a game it looks fake AF and is actually more real feeling if slick tarmac isn't rendered accurate as the lack of something is always much less noticeable that something being implemented poorly is. I have said this before ; but I massively prefer the look of the baked shadows in Hogwarts Legacy over the appearance of the RT as the RT sucks out all the shadows from a scene and often makes a game look like a doll's house. I'd rather have some artistic shadows over to much bounce light and the end result looking sterile and boring by being over lit. You can see this in Metro Exudus when the shadows removed from door ways are artistically less impressive as there is way to much light in the scene near door ways and so the transition to the bright exterior looses all artistic vision. Metro Exodus is to me the thing to NOT DO that is the boring plan looking way to eat up all your system resources and end up with something that looks barely any better in some places and actually worse in others. If the videogame industry is still so deluded as to want to be Hollywood then they can at least take that one good lesson from them when it comes to faking your lighting for artistic effect. Art design and design in general should include your lighting. The dullest thing in the world in videogame terms is the look of a game with dynamic weather / day night cycle that is done poorly & RT & related technologies is like the lazy developers way of automating something to the degree they don't have to even HAVE an artistic vision for their games anymore. That would be a shame.

In my opinion, UE5 has been in a weird space where we have seen excellent demos but those features never made into real games. It could be that the adoption is difficult, or game development has lost its motivation in general. We are seeing so many repetitive game concepts, and devs don’t have enough time to adopt UE5. They have to push things ASAP. or run out of money.

The first UE5 games have only started hitting the market within the last two or three months. It's still very early days yet, and developers are still learning how best to use the engine and the UE5 developers are still working on optimizations based on feedback from those early titles.

Tech demos are not games. Tech demos are designed to show all capabilities of a new technology with a great attention to details. UE5 will be used by lazy and low level developers mostly as an editor, not powerful cutting edge engine, so get ready to see more UE4 looking games (at best) with twice performance hit, if not worse.

@@J0rdan912uh, yeah, tech demos are not games, they don't have 40 hours of content and 30 different gameplay systems. Games are harder, they are doing more things, they end up not looking as good (though the gap has narrowed quite a bit since the days of the PS2 subsurface scattering demo)

I'm curious, did UE5 add or improve on things that isn't just visual? Like new and better ways to interact with objects and the environment, new possibilities for game mechanics, better AI, etc. I wish they focused more on those instead of these "good looking" effects. I also hate the techniques that makes it look good but only in some angles and if you move, it'll be very noticeable that something changed that doesn't make sense. The one I saw here is the reflection in the water that goes away when you look down. Breaks inmersion! 😄

ahaha of course not, how they will sell this old crap(UE) if not for good looking picture. As an unreal developer(c++ not the blueprints) I can confirm that since 4.27 (actualy even older) 0 actual dev QOL or problems of the past were fixed. Most of new stuff is all about rendeing and virtual production. 4.27 editor was 18GB-ish in size. Latest UE 5.3.whatever is over 40 or 50 GB!! 0 out of added space is for actual game dev
@crestofhonor2349

UE5 improves visuals. Improving new ways to interact with the environment is 100% down to the developers behind the game. The engine can do whatever you want as long as you are planning to customize it like every other engine on the market. If a developer wants new environmental interaction they must program that themselves Also that reflection issue isn't new in the slightest. That's SSR(Screen Space Reflections) and that technique has been around since the 7th generation. It only traces the reflection when the object being reflected is on screen. If the camera can't see the object the reflection isn't traced onto the surface and the game falls back to whatever is next whether that be cube maps or something else.
@SimonBuchanNz

Yes... ish. If you go watch the UE5 initial reveals, it's pretty clear the primary goal was "make the engine figure it out" - lumen for lighting, nanite for LODs, Virtual Shadow Maps for shadows; they're all features that remove the burden from the developer to spend time making it look good at the technical level (hopefully so they can spend the time making it look good at the artistic level). There's also a bunch of audio, physics simulation and particle systems changes than nobody ever mentions. Later, with the Matrix demo along with just showing off the existing tools, they talked about procedural generation of the city, and revealed their new (and still preview) "mass" systems that drive all the AI for citizens and cars etc moving around: this is their version of ECS / data oriented programming that is the sort of thing you were asking about. Later demos have mostly focused on the procedural content stuff, but there's a bunch of other work going on too: for example live production is a common running thread, volumetric assets like hair and clouds getting improvements in support, always more animation system tweaks, procedural audio etc.

Unreal Engine + the focus on graphics is the biggest plague of this consoles' generation. PC Gaming is suffering too because of this which makes it less accessible than ever before. Push the graphics, says Digital Foundry, then complain when DLSS/FSR, heck even Frame Generation, is a necessity for playable framerates.

The problem with UE5 is that it doesn't "gurantee" better visuals, but when you tick the most marketed features on (Lumen and Nanite) you guarantee a performance drop. A big one too. Something like Remnant 2 doesn't look nearly good enough to justify having to enable DLSS even at 1080p to run "properly" (and there are still drops) and if I remember correctly, it uses only Nanite. I feel like both Lumen and Nanite make developing games FASTER but not easier and many publishers (and some developers) will take advantage of that, without putting the extra work to make sure the game runs properly. It's why I don't see the industry switching more often to UE5 as a good thing.

Lumen and nanite do guarantee better visuals 100% but if you're horrible at implementing stuff, even ray tracing can look crap. That means that it would look even worse if you used the same "skills" without those technologies.

I'm enjoying Remnant II on PC, but I do feel like the visuals could be better... The lack of proper global illumination via lumen (or whatever other method) hurts the game a bit, as it looks only marginally better than the first game. I'd know, since I beat the first game right before starting the second one. It doesn't look bad, and it actually runs quite well on my middling PC (RTX 3060 + Ryzen 5 3600X)... It's just that when I boot up Control or Robocop both games blow me out of the water with their graphics and Remnant II is just... Okay.

Yes I’ve enjoyed my series x since day 1 but damn I wish they would of just waited a few years and released consoles that are actually powerful more compared to the 40 series graphics cards instead of the extremely old 2080 card. I mean “next gen” games aren’t even really out yet expect a very few of them so yeah they came out way way too early.
