just fuel injection with full control over fuel and ignition timing is going to do wonders. losing a couple seconds off 0-30 would be nice, might be it wants 2nd gear straight through? that'd be fun testing to figure out.

Hey just a couple of thoughts, Firstly like someone else stated 520 pitch chain does have slightly less drag than everything else, also you could look into X-Ring chains. The parasitic loss between the o-ring and the side plate is significantly reduced on an X-Ring chain. Next, the aerodynamic improvements that you we're able to receive with the belly pan, can be continued on. An entire belly pan that runs from the engine compartment all the way back to the rear bumper, has been known to improve fuel economy on stock first gen insights. If nothing else on my insight that I had the rear bumper for some reason drug down into the slipstream and acted as a parachute. Fixing just that was worth 3 miles to gallon on the highway. Additionally, although you saw a reduced top speed with your cardboard the mock-up, it may still be beneficial to work into that. You could have dedicated ducting to the air intake, and into the inlet for the cooling fan assembly. It would be interesting to see how a cold air, or a ram air intake would effect top speed. If you could find a magnahelic pressure differential gauge to find the highest inlet pressure point, all the better. And finally, although I can't tell what tires are on your vehicle currently, if you don't have low rolling resistance tires, you should really consider getting a set. I'm not current with what is considered the lowest rolling resistance tire for the first gen insight anymore, but back when I had mine it was the Bridgestone potenza, or the b381 if you can find it. Tires alone on the inside we're worth 5 miles to the gallon usually, and that was just the difference between a good passenger car tire and a low rolling resistance tire. Thanks for all your hard work. This build is interesting, and along with others is making me consider putting a 212 on a motorcycle frame I have. I love the regular updates, it's usually a highlight to my week

Engine already has a stock forced air cooler. Attached to the flywheel is a centrifugal blower, the case for the flywheel is the ducting and air is forced through the fins on the block. These small engines are pretty much self sufficient. Give it cool air and fuel, you can leave it to run the whole day without supervision. Cold air intake tube might help to keep the engine from taking in warm air but it's going to get a turbo anyway, its going to have proper ducting and intercooler. Hood scoop "might" work but since the bumper vents are working, why fix something if it ain't broken.
@Darisiabgal7573
@Darisiabgal7573 3 жыл бұрын
@@mikefooyc8237 I agree but if we assume laminar flow from the ducts outlet to the end of the pan much of the flow is going to miss the cooling of the blower. At 65 MPH the differential pressure from the front of the duct to the back of the compartment should be more than adequate to cool the engine down. So if it is not, then it means some of the cooling air is being wasted.

You are now getting close to the point where your Insight is competitive with small European cars. My brother in law is French. He lives and works in the USA now. Back when he and my sister were living in France, he had a Peugeot 104. It has a 1 liter engine, carries 4 people and the engine has roughly 45-50 hp. Your description of how you drive your Insight with the 420cc engine is exactly how he drove his 104, especially when loaded with 2 or 3 people. We actually had to retrain him how to drive when he moved here. His habit was full gas, full brake and very little else. The idea that an engine can have power in reserve that you don't use normally, was quite foreign to him.

Lower it an inch or two on coilovers for less drag and some weight savings, and get the lightest, skinniest wheels you can find (like a really small size enkei rpf1) with as low profile eco tires as you can get for less rolling resistance and rotating mass. You could also try making a full car belly pan with some kind of rigid plastic sheet, like PTFE perhaps, and also making smooth wheel covers. Maybe don't block the grille, but make sure that air is ducted exactly where it needs to be with no leaks and add a hood or fender vent so it flows through and doesn't make as much drag. Also, do all your speed and mpg tests with the windows up! It makes a difference!

The skateboard wheel had quite abit to do with it. When you replaced the sprocket with that wheel, you essentially gained back some of the friction loss of the chains clattering the sprocket guide. But the SB wheel literally just guides the chain, no addition contact with the chain. You could have gained back .5 to 1 hp from friction losses, thus giving more power available to propel your car to higher speeds.

If we exclude enviromental differences, possibly the tensioner "skateboard wheel" had a big impact on the speed increase. Drivetrain loss is no joke at that low power level. Possbily also the new chain runs easier if the old one was gummed up with dirt. Those things and the bellypan are the main things that increased the top speed, I think.

It is really interesting to see what kind of performance you can get from a single cylinder air cooled engine propelling a car. I really look forward to watching your new videos. Phil

Awesome!! the extra mileage. belly pan and also I think the skate board wheel has less frictional loss than the sprocket. This is so exciting and especially looking forward to turbo and fuel injection.

1:26 You can also use a 1/4-20 spacer, put it over one of the holes in the chain link, then use a good pair of vice grips to barely press fit one side of the link in, do the same to the other side, and repeat until it's press fit all the way.

Excellent video with an acute attention to detail. As for the skateboard wheel, that is a perfect solution to your problem and close to the stock solution taken by many dirt bike manufacturers

I recommend cutting some venting slots bent like an hvac vent if you have issues with engine heat. It will help pull cooler air into the engine bay and help push the hotter air out. Could also put some spacers in the hood mounts to lift it up at the windshield to help remove heat

Where is your air dam? The belly pan does not replace the air dam. Air dams improve cooling. Also, with a belly pan you've blocked the air exit. Air must flow through. Add ducts/louvers to the fenders to give the air a place to go and then reinstall your air block. I think you'll see a vast improvement. It worked on my '91 Tercel.

For cooling down the engine, you could try wrapping some coil pipes around the engine block and add a radiator and pump.

I think you need a fully clad bottom to reduce turbulence underneath. Fiberglass would probably be your best bet. Fasten a sheet of fiberglass underneath, trim the edges, and paint on the resin. Doesn't need to be structurally strong. Then take it off, resin the other side, and paint. Next would be front side skirts to keep air from getting underneath in the first place. They have to be as rigid and low as possible. Take a note from the first time they were introduced to F1, and make them telescope up and down. Thiers were meant to wear, but you can make yours hover 1" above the ground with caster wheels to push it up. Last would be a rear defuser to reduce wake drag. Basically a gradually tapered lip on the lower bumper to allow the air to smoothly expand, and some channels to keep it uniform. It's also good to know I could probably get my 420 monster bike up to 60mph if I put the 32t sprocket on. But I'll pass on that for safety and torque reasons.

Add a ram air scoop and some ducting to keep the cylinder head temperature down. punch some louvers on the hood ala VW bug and add temperature controlled cooling fan if you really want to go high speed. You can then cover the front end openings.

Literally more than 20KM/L for a car that goes over 100km/h with a single person and a full tank of gas. That's real fuel economy! Keep it on!

Fuel injection and tunable spark timing are going to make this motor come alive. I am very excited to see that. You are going to need a more agressive cam to pick up high end to take advantage of that CVT and gear box.
