Fun fact: Glassine actually isn't coated with anything! The shiny surface is a result of taking the plain pulp of the paper and buffing it with hot rollers (called supercalendering). The process, which used steel and fabric rollers, causes all the fibers to lay the same direction. Glassine is one of my absolute favorite papers because of its versatility due to not having a coating and the super cool technique used to make it. This is one reason I get so irritated when sellers or reviewers don't know the difference between true Glassine and papers that are made shiny through an additive process like wax (dry and wet) or plastic but just call it all "glassine". LOL Those others do NOT behave the same! So, if I ever find true glassine, I try to let people know that in reviews and if I find imitators, I try to let people know that, too. 😊 Thank you for this video! I've enjoyed your channel for years and have even gotten some of your downloads in the past. You're a great teacher and I'm thankful for all you share with us.

@donnawagner @robynmclendon what excellent nerdy art project info! Does glassine absorb paint all the way through so that if you tear it there are no white edges? I know rice paper does. Any thoughts on different properties of glassine and rice paper?
@therealdonnawagner
@therealdonnawagner 2 жыл бұрын
@@carlagrayson1810 this is just in my experience, though I'm sure Robyn has a lot more and probably can add much more expertise to this answer, but glassine tends to keep paint on the surface for a little while which gives it some workability. Now, part of that is the property of the paper itself to resist absorbing things (which can vary depending on the thickness and quality of the glassine) but part of that also has to do with the paint and ink I use and how quickly it dries. Sometimes I can get white edges when I tear it, sometimes I don't. Again, I think it depends on a few variables so play and experiment with things to know what works best for you and the effects you like! I'll say that glassine, just like any paper, has various grades and the glassine Robyn links to is very thick, as far as glassine goes. It's not what you get when you buy little stamp collecting envelopes. This has a very sturdy base and consistent surface while remaining somewhat translucent and crinkly. Rice paper, on the other hand, is really absorbent. At least, all the rice paper I've ever used has been. So, it takes the paint and ink quickly and deeply. You can sometimes find rice paper with one side smoother than the other, but all my experience has been that it doesn't allow for much surface play with media (which makes sense since it's primarily used for things like calligraphy where you want to capture and freeze a stroke of the brush for clarity). Fun things you can do with glassine because of its surface are techniques with moving and swirling the paint, you can even play with alcohol for cool effects and can try things like alcohol inks. Perhaps somewhat counterintuitively, though, it also tends to take most stamped images really well. So, you can get surface play and clarity from one paper. Because glassine doesn't have additives in it to make it shiny, it allows full play with media and then eventually kind of bonds with the media (unlike waxed or plastic coated papers where most media will bead up and sit on the surface and then dry in a bunch of speckles that usually can be wiped off with little effort). Hope that was helpful in some way! Have lots of fun exploring! 😊

Grunge! I absolutely love this. I have had a passion for old walls for years and photograph them whenever I can. Here in the UK we have some interesting ones. Certain regions have feature walls with alternating bands of brick and knapped flint and the colours and texture you get after decades and possibly centuries of weathering are just gorgeous. For a small country we have a great variety of geology, and older buildings are created from the local stone, and they all weather differently. It's fascinating. I also have a passion for rust. People think it's all the same colour - rust! - but it isn't. It is all shades, and even better when it's got old bubbling paint on it! My hubby thinks I'm weird. When we are out, I take pictures of rusty old machinery and when we are by the sea, heaps of old faded rope, and beaten up old boats, and also doors and windows with interesting catches and peeling paint. He likes pretty views and family snaps. Not for me lol! I am new to gel printing and so far my plate is remaining stubbornly and boringly clean!! I need to build up some nice grungy layers.

Hey Katheryn! I love Robyn's videos too. I just wanted to say that last year Robyn did an epic series of Gelli printing classes, and one of them was about Gelli printing on fabric. That class was not about printing on fabric constructed into clothing-- we printed onto pieces of (usually) recycled fabric cut into squares to print. The class is on her website for a very affordable price, and it might be very useful to get you going. At the very least, you will learn some really useful things about how fabric takes Gelli prints which I imagine will get the wheels in your mind turning! I thought that Robyn''s Gelli printing course series was a thorough and stimulating introduction to Gelli printing and its applications.

Grunge! After discovering your old wall technique. I never clean my plate... sometimes try hard to build up the grunge to get those amazing old wall looks!

I remember originally finding you and thinking "oh wow I'm not weird after all!" I love all the old crust and goop left on the plate. All I want to do is make old walls like I see in travels. In Cambodia, I loved to imagine who stood in the same spot thousands of years ago, carving the figures. Not naive, I know for sure their life wasn't like mine, but this imagination is food for a creative's soul, and is a way to re-live happy times while traveling. Pompeii hopefully FINALLY happening in 2022 so you can guess old wall inspiration & colors right now!

I’ve always been a fan of the wabi- sabi effects so grunge in art is most desirable, in my opinion! Txz jeanne

Grunge! I have to say I religiously cleaned my plate thinking that was what was best for the plate UNTIL I starting watching your videos. I just love the grungey look and you always get different results.

Hi Robyn. I’ve just managed to order the glassine paper in the Uk from Amazon. Very instructive video, as they always are from you. It would be great to see how you use these old wall gel prints.
