I had a friend who loved old JD tractors. He rebuilt several very old ones. My favorite was a "Dual Fuel" tractor. I think it was from the '40s. I think he would start it on gasoline and then switch to the other tank. He said it would run on almost any fuel. Unfortunately, Clyde died during Covid. You would have loved seeing all his old JDs. As I recall he had about 6 of them, all antiques.

Can't beat the sound of an old JD working and lugging down. I have an old MF 10 horse. Kind of the same way but not quite.

Brock, I love old JD tractors. I used to rake hay back in the late 60's with one of those for my uncle when I was about 10 years old. Love the sound. Cant wait to see more of it.

Hi Brock and family! Leaving anything sit nowadays with ethanol fuel will jack up the fuel system, even for short periods sometimes. Do yourselves a favor and for things that really matter and that arnt used much run a product like True Fuel. It costs more, but well worth it in the end... or learn not to let anything sit with ethanol gas in it anymore. Run em dry before putting them up. Leter.

Left side of carburetor is the idle mixture setting. Right side of carburetor is the load mixture setting. PTO & clutch have to be engaged for lift to work. Power up, gravity down.

I think the PTO needs to be engaged to get your hydraulics and lift arms to work. I think there's also a way to select between your rockshaft and your hydraulic outlets. I have a 39 B with no hydraulics and a 53 60 so they're both just a little different than yours.

My dad had an old used JD "B", I remember he paid $450 for it, that was a lot of money in the 70's! The tractor is long gone, but the implements are still parked around the farm.

Shift the PTO in gear and push the clutch forward and see if your hydraulic lift arms work. In my opinion, that gray sediment is from today's gasoline evaporating and leaving residue. Keeping the tank full, may minimize evaporation and dilute the residue, but cleaning the sediment bowl out regularly will still be necessary. Keeping the tank full, may also help minimize rusting inside the tank. Those rear tires will out last your years, for minimal use of that tractor. Even if you plow a couple acres every year, they will work fine and outlast the garbage rubber used in today's 'new' tires.

Brock, I used to work on for many years a 1952 JD 420 with a utility front end. That gray material could have been from the tank seam itself degrading, I had that tank on the 420 begin to leak on me and had to weld it as they are mounted solidly to the tractor and the vibration was never dampened really. That over the years rattled the tank to finally leak bad enough I had to do a bit of welding on the seams. I remember a gray material in that seam, and it was inside the tank in that seam area, which seemingly was pinched secure (hope that makes sense) Anyway, glad to hear yours run, the carbs are really easy to understand and can be picked up new for fairly cheap or sometimes rebuilt depending on the seat type inside them as sometime corrosion ruins the built in non replaceable needle seats.

I would think that possibly that residue could possibly be from lead additive, since the seats in the head would be of a soft compound, and obviously gasoline no longer has lead in it

You are only hitting on 1 cylinder. Check both plugs. Your timing could also be off.
