I think it's cool Fee's mom was so loving and into following his career. She wanted to stay connected to her son by whatever means. Going to Tubes shows! She didn't care about society telling her she was " old and out" she just wanted to see her son in his element and happy. Now THAT is love.

The tubes absolutely ruled the local San Francisco airwaves (KSAN, KTIM, KSJO, KOME) back in the early seventies when they came up. They were a supporting act when Led Zeppelin played at Kezar Stadium in the spring of 1973. I think Zep was afraid to go on after them. They were that good! Good Times.

It's a good record but I did hear something that the Tubes handlers at the label had been let go so the advocacy for them was no longer there at the label level. As much as I love Rundgren's work with the tour you have to wonder what it would have been like had Foster done a third record with them.

Hey there John, I've been the Official Backup/Sub on keys/vocals with The Tubes since 2012. I'm booked to perform with them for a couple of gigs in August, and maybe more in the future. Thank you so much for this in-depth interview with Fee! I've watched countless videos on both of your KZfaq channels. Thank you so much for all that you do! :-)

I love Love Bomb. It's one of my fave Tubes albums. One Good Reason, Love Bomb and For A Song are some of the best tunes they wrote. Never understood why it bombed. Now also is a classic. That's my fave Tube album hands down. I think it's their stage shows that got them banned in the UK harmed the image of the band. They were considered too risque for most audiences but they are probably my favorite band.

Loved every moment of this interview. You gave Fee a lot of space and did not interrupt. He really shared with us. I hate that Love Bomb was not a huge success. Fee's tunes on are phenomenal - Come As You Are was brilliant. For A Song was very catchy and weird, reminiscent of their A&M years, a la Smoke. Foster would have been proud to have written Piece By Piece with Luke. Todd did an amazing job, but I gather that he was not buds with Fee, probably moreso with Bill. I would love to hear more about Spooner; I always thought he and Roger were super tight. Loved all of their stuff. Sad that Rick has passed now. End of an era.

Back in the day, my drummer, my friend Carmen Seretti introduced me to the Tubes. White Punks on Dope, Don’t touch me There. My fav Tubes song is Piece by Piece. This was our drinking and coke days. We both got Hep C. Sadly he didn’t make it but I went and got treated and have been Hep C free for a long time. I miss him. Almost 20yrs later I sometimes cry and I listen to The Tubes and thank Carmen for turning me on to the music and putting up with me as I for better and better on guitar. Thank you for the music Fee. Fee I have a bunch of unfinished songs. Want to write the lyrics? It would be an amazing tribute to my lost friend.

Thanks for this great insightful interview. I've seen the band many times starting in Philly at the Tower Theater and DC area. Met them a few times and they were all very personable and approachable. Allowed me to hang with them drinking a couple of beers after a few concerts. They always remembered who I was and welcomed a conversation. Despite the wild and crazy stage show they were very grounded dudes as was Re. I'll always cherish those memories and look forward to the next tour.

Saw the partial interview on your other channel and was intrigued… so I came here to listen to the whole thing. Have seen the Tubes 3 times. Once at the Senator Theater in Chico, CA, in 1975 in their full White Punks on Dope regalia, once circa 1981 stripped down at a club Galactica 2000 in Sacramento, CA. Caught a Chunky chocolate bar Fee threw out to the audience and got their autographs. Finally at the California State Fair without any theatrically. Fascinating background that explains alot about the Tubes

I was in the Record Business from 72-79 last 5 in SF. I had friends of the band’s ( I did not know them) however a best friend had Prairie paint some really incredible wall murals in his home-really talented! I was able to see them many times. If you ever get or got the chance to see them they were like no other Band. I was completely blown up. Great music amazing talent and a Stage Show so intergalactic you just sat there completely in shock. Quay Lewd ( Fee) a character he played was this tall monster drug induced Rock Star. They had props, costumes a kinda scripted goulash. I was so ecstatic when they worked with David Foster and Lukeather it took the Band to a whole new level. What a complete joy !!! Great interview.

Joe Cocker opened for him at Mann on 6/30/90. I saw the same show on 7/8/90 on Long Island. Cocker stole the show. Saw him a dozen times after that show. Walked out on SRV during Voodoo Chile encore. Everything he played sounded repetitive. We were so pumped to see him. Great unobstructed view floor seats. Disappointed. Felt bad about walking out when we heard of his death a month later. Bummer.

Definitely more than a concert, didn't think of a circus but yeah. New Year's Eve 1977 in Berkeley, so crazy with multiple themes. Appearance of Quaalude from a cloud, well, amazing. Shot 2 rolls of film, finally up on Flickr. Couldn't get over how much happened. Funny about his venture in the Tenderloin. One time driving from the Haight, someone said the Tubes lived around where we were. Passed by a car without front bumper, a pair of shoes on the frame. Must be the place.

Before the recording of Love Bomb, the whole band went against David Foster except Fee. They were suppose to consider Fee the leader but they took control of him, that's why he quit the band in late 1986. But he rejoined in 1993 after the release of The Best Of The Tubes CD. A few of the band members had already quit by the time fee came back in the band. If I were in his shoes, I would've said, "No! You're NOT ruling me! Because I'm the lead singer of the band, I will NOT Let you rule me! If you don't like it, that's too fucking bad! Either that, or I quit." So he couldn't accept the fact that they went against David Foster, so he quit the band in late '86. Fee Waybill deserved much better. Waybill's "Read My Lips" album may not have had any hits but, I'm sorry to say, I do believe that going against David Foster and the "Love Bomb" album killed the band. Even Capitol Records didn't want the band to fire David Foster. I'm sure The Tubes would've had more hits if they hadn't fired David Foster.

I was working in beaver creek Colorado 20 years ago at a hotel. A lady and her son were staying at the hotel. She looked exactly like Fee. Somehow I was talking with the son who was in his late teens and we got talking. He asked me if I knew the knew who the tubes were and I told him of course, I grew up on them and loved them. And before he could say it, I said to him, your mom is fe way bill's sister and He said, yeah. He was a bit surprised that I put it together. Spoke with her and she told me how she and the family were always hoping that fee would make enough money to eventually retire and live with some comfort after being a Rockstar for his profession. Especially when he first started. Nice conversation and chat with the kid and her. Needless to say, I felt a little sorry for her that she looked more like fee than she should have. Funny thing was, when she first arrived at the hotel, I thought, wow, this lady looks like fee waybill.

Nice nod to the 'Fabulous Stains' movie a real lost cult favourite, and then Fee goes into the SCTV 'Fishin' Musician' story; that was pure all-Canadian magic. The original SCTV shows were better than SNL back-in-the-day. This interview is probably one of the best top 3 with Fee Waybill I have ever seen. It's evident from Fee's comments and recollections the 70s were the best time for theatrical rock music and stagecraft. To me that was real freedom to create something entertaining and a better breeding ground for lasting melodic rock and roll music. The freedom of inspiration seemed to lead to all kinds of possibilities.

I have a Tubes story: Tubes played the Country Club in the Valley 30-some years ago and my friend's band, 'Thunder Bisquits' opened for them! Kim Shaheen's band, which is funny: Kim claimed to have been a studio musician for Peter Gabriel & others, ha, but never had any proof of this - never credited. This was their greatest gig by far; how this crappy band opened for the Tubes is anybody's guess! I'm sure they planned on doing more than 3 songs but shouts of "TUBES!!" & "You stink!" got them off the stage fast. I remember running to the front when the Tubes show was done & was one of many guys who shook hands with Fee Waybill. His hands were cold and wet.
