$30 Outdoor Bench with Back from 2x6s [Only 3 Tools and 30mins]

This bench is actually a spin off of the well known Leopold Bench which was named after the conservationist Aldo Leopold who built them for birdwatching and nature photography. I liked the simplicity of the Leopold Bench but wanted to modify the design a little by varying the angles to make it a little more comfortable and have a proper seat and back. just want to let you know, we built this project for my son's eagle scout project, it came out fantastic. we built 8 of them!. and we then donated them to Alafia State Park , here in florida for a primitive camping site. they are currently sitting around a fire ring. they are beautiful and so comfortable!. thanks for the design and instructions.

Really comfortable and sturdy bench. My cat passed away earlier this year and I put the bench right next to where I leave her flowers. I’m gonna put some sort of plaque on the bench with her name. It’s gonna be real classy. Thanks 🙏 ❤

I built 2 of these from your original video a year or so ago. These benches are SURPRISINGLY COMFORTABLE and easy to put together. They were made for the girlfriend's birthday to put around the fire pit.

I finished my bench today. It looks great. I just want to say it took five years to buy all my tools , miter saw , table saw , router, gig saw .. drills , bits , etc one piece at a time ..

I built the 2x4x8" benches and they are amazing comfortable! Everyone that has sat in them said the angle and lean of the seat and back are perfect and I have to agree! Thank you so much for taking the time and these videos!

Built two of these and they really are as easy as he makes it look. If you build two, then you only need 7 2x6x8' boards. These are very stable and don't tip forward or backward easily and are quite comfortable.

I've used the earlier 2x8 video and made a dozen of these benches, but using 2x10 material instead. The benches are very heavy, very sturdy. Thank you!

I built this bench over the weekend! It was my first time doing any woodworking (even my first time using a circular saw...)!! Though it's not as precise and perfect as this one in the video, it's a bench! This video was incredibly helpful and so thorough. I learned a lot and now have a bench to enjoy :)

I built one of these using your plan and it came out great and I just wanted you to know that with the two longer leftover pieces I found a way to make arm rests with cup holders. You just cut out a long notch in the middle of each that would wedge into or over top of each long leg and underneath the lower back support cutting an angle in the front portion of the notch to match the angle of the front part of the long leg, then cut out about a 4" hole at the front/center of each arm for a cup holder and then epoxy a shaped piece of thick rubber padding on top of the holes reaching the width of the arm and part of the length and finally cutting a cross slit at the hole location. I did not know how to add a picture of what I did, sorry.

I built this today. I live in Canada. The materials cost about 70 bucks. The prices of wood are ridiculously high right now. It was super easy to make. Instructions were easy to follow.

Great Idea! Love your Friendly approach! I was looking for something where the Pressure treated does not contact your skin. I feel it's worth paying extra for Azek or Trex on the seat and back. I do like the Design. I know it would need support.

Is it feasible to build small benches for children out of 1 x 6 x 8's? The 2 x 8 x 8's are a bit heavy. But, thanks for those plans and I will try the 2 x 6 x 8 bench. And thanks for sharing your knowledge and simplifying building these benches, and all of the other products.

I might try this. Thanks for using basic tools and not saying you can and then just use the fancy tools to do it. Also I would consider using construction adhesive to make it a little stronger, but also making sure I don’t use too much and have it squeeze out.

Since these seem to be easy to build, there's a temptation to build several at one go. The logical upshot would be to improve the design by having the seat portion pivot upwards toward the backrests, for storage. Go one step further and offer different widths to allow multiple benches to nest, in storage, a bit like Russian dolls.

Great video and plans. Just a imho the back is a little too far back. I made four of these benches and w two of them i put the legs about 2 inches closer and it gives way more back support. Ive had a number of friends over and everyone agrees that the ones with the closer back are more comfortable....but whatever who cares thats the beauty of woodworking make it how ya wanna and enjoy. Thanks !

Yes but I would use construction adhesive but be careful not to use too much or it will squeeze out and you’ll be able to see it.

Ive made 3 of the 2x8 benches from your video and came out great. Price difference in 2x6 and 2x8 arent that much, its like a $2 difference per board. Im guessing all measurements and angles are about the same as the old bench ?

So each 8 foot board would be an extra $16 and it takes 4 boards so that's a difference of $64.

This is probably a dumb question 🙋‍♂️ but… how do you get your cuts soooo straight with the circular saw. I have an old circular saw that I have here but my cuts always come out not straight or the cut it self is really wavy not a smooth cut like if the blade is moveing

You should always predrill a hole, especially so close to edges to prevent splitting..

Yes. Bare in mind as it comes to lumber width, actual size is different than advertised. For example: Two-by-six or 2 x 6 is actually 1 1/2 inches x 5 1/2 inches. There are charts online. So now the question is what are standard lumber sizes in EU :) I am about to find out at Leroy Merlin :p

Giving some tips on how to turn it over when securing the top/back boards would have been very helpful. I tried to do this build alone and had to stop after flipping the bench end-to-end because I nearly ruined the build by thinking I could do this move alone. Otherwise, this is a great project and thanks for sharing it!

Im confused about whether i should use treated or untreated. Every yells "treated wood only for outdoors" but it would have to sit for 6 months before i could use it. Any thoughts on that? I built 2 of these this weekend out of treated wood and are currently on my front porch. Im afraid to sell them because i don't know how much they will warp while drying.

nope, the weight is pushing straight down over the X on the crossed ends. and the end point of the back leg is behind your butt.
