The new interactive chord feature that came with firmware V1.5 can really open up a world of musical possibilities. This video shows how you can use this feature with external gear and make your one-shot performances easier! You can transpose your sequences based on the root note of chords - not only the 4 parts of the JD-Xi internal sequencer - but also external gear!
I'm using Roland JD-XI, Roland MX-1, Roland TR-8, Korg Minilogue, Korg Electribe ER-1, Waldorf Streichfett, Strymon BigSky, EHX Small Stone, Lexicon MX-200. Recorded directly onto the camera's audio input.
There is another video which shows me jamming with the same gear - but also I've added the new Roland System-8 - be sure to check it out:

Excellent!! Thank you! I’m rather a late member of the JdXi community having just bought one yesterday. But it looks like a lot of fun especially with this feature which I haven’t found anywhere else on KZfaq or even on the internet for that matter. Thanks again!

It is a great feature but the JD-Xi has very bad presets built in. The sounds u are hearing are not from the JD-Xi but rather from the external gear listed. One cool feature does not sell a keyboard in my opinion. The other weird thing is that this JD-Xi and it's "supposed" big brother, the JD-XA, which I do own, are absolutely nothing alike. Completely different sounds.

That feature (auto-change background chords/notes based on user input) which has been available on many toy keyboards since the 80's has been sadly missing from most pro synths. What other pro synths do that? I'm lumping it in with "auto accompaniment" even though I suspect it's a bit more advanced than that.

Hi Woody. You will probably find that you have to fiddle with the original key setting if you start trying to get fancy with your chord progressions. It really is more of a simple root note "EDM" tool.

The Jdxi is such a beast for the price Nothing can beat it. If Roland could do a deluxe version with more knobs, a beafed up sequencer, real keybed, axed towards real-time control.. It would be so nice I'm not talking about the JdXa, or Phantom, or whatever.. They are very different from the Jdxi in terms of approach. The Jdxi is a "Groove Machine" in the pure Roland tradition A Jdxi ++++ would be the deal. Roland if you hear me..

Hi Geoff! There's some good sequencers out there - but for hardware, the best ones are Akai MPC Live, Elektron Octatrack, and Deluge ... the cheaper ones are BeatStep Pro, Korg Electribe, Elektron Digitakt etc. Or you could look at some older used/2nd hand technology. Hi Nsera, Yes I had the Roland MX-1 setup as the master and everything else was connected via USB or MIDI DIN - including a Roland TR-8, Waldorf Streichfett and Korg Minilogue. You can set the JD-XI to external MIDI clock in the system setup (through the menu).

Hey, I've been playing around with the interactive chord on my JD-Xi and have run into some troubles. I was playing a song in the key of E and every time I went to play a C#m, the JD played a Cm instead? Do you also encounter a similar problem, or am I setting things up wrong on my end?

Wow! Having that real-time transposition available kind of helps make up for the constrictive 4 Measure sequences the JD-Xi is limited to (unless you use the "32nd note scale / half-tempo" trick to enable sequences up to 16 Measures). Thanks for explaining this so thoroughly. Am I correct in thinking that if you turn off the interactive chord on only 1 part then the other un-muted parts can transpose while the part with creative chord turned off will stay in its originally sequenced notes without changing? Man, there is a lot of depth to this little synth that isn't obvious at all, especially when coupled with external midi controllers or the JD-Xi Manager patch editor.

Volume control slowly fades too. I bought the 2nd unit in November 2019, now it has developed the exact same problem. JDXI needs to admit its defective engineering on this device.

check which MIDI channel your MiniNova is running on - it needs to be either 1, 2 or 3 to receive the digital or analog parts of the sequence.

ranzee it works. 😊 Another thing is i guess the mininova is monotimbral and when i sequence 2 channels at the same time the other synth is turn off. When i assign channel 2 in midi the synth , the midi channel 1 sound is off.

You cannot do that with an external keyboard. I have a footcontroller with midi notes. I think it is the same.

Hi GreenHoleSun - you can always use it as a sound module and connect up a better keyboard - thus opening the JD-XI up to more hidden features like Aftertouch, SYSEX param controls etc - check out this vid I did (a little technical, but doable with a bit of learning and patience): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g81mi6yJtsq6mYk.html

After lots of research I purchased a JD XI. I read everything I could on it and other similar caliber and similarly priced synths. Most every reviewer or write up I read pointed out it's limitations, which they should as potential buyers need to know if it has the functionality they're looking for before dropping what usually is going to be anywhere from $500 to $2000. However, anybody who has been in the market for a synth, be they analog, digital or a bit of both, knows that every synth has it's limitations. One unit that you consider may have a feature that's important to you and another unit may be lacking that particular feature that you want in the synth that you end up settling on. The #1 complaint across the board, that really seemed to be THE deal breaker for people. The big problem that I noticed being sighted across all forums and reviews. The black mark that kept the JD XI in "baby's toy" status and not in the "versatile, portable, nice sounding, uniquely creative professional tool" category, was the simple fact that JD XI was designed with smaller "cheap" feeling keys that caused several reviewers to proclaim something like, "If your a beginner this is a great synth for you, if your experienced in synthesis and music production probably not for you." This is kind of frustrating. Yes the keys are small, but if you've actually used this synth you know those keys are sturdy and adequate for what the JD XI was meant to do also, there's nothing wrong with the build quality it feels sturdy enough. If they made a metal casing with full sized keys it may cost hundreds more. They also listened to peoples gripes and pretty much immediately corrected the dark red lettering on the control panel with a black and white mat overlay. Here's the thing... I was recruited as a vocalist for an industrial metal band in the late 90s which opened me up to electronic music. I bought a Roland 505 Groovebox so I could compose beats for the songs my guitarist and I composed together. It was digital, the sound quality was not the best, which actually worked very well with the gritty, industrial, electronic hell fire sound of our band. The notoriously poor sound quality of the 505 was not totally impossible to remedy somewhat. It was sample based digital analog emulation (the technology has definitely improved) It was a sound creation playground adsr sliders LFO's, ENV, low/high pass cutoff filters. More effects than you can imagine compared to most of today's digital synths, multiple wave forms and modulation options. thousands of instrument samples, all the roland classic drum kits, synths, strings, brass, base tones for creating endless totally custom pads, instruments and sounds from scratch which include a base tone from all the wave selections built into it. Along with it there was a 16 step TR 909 style pattern sequencer which doubled as keys which allowed real time recording as well. The reason why I went through all of that was because to me the JD XI is a great sounding modern take on what Roland was shooting for in those mid to late 90s grooveboxes done right and simplified. With a real analog option, digital analog emulation that's light years beyond those old groovebox's and the ability to sequence patterns, sculpt sounds and compose a track from start to finish. little tweaking in the daw and, BANG... A pretty quality produced track. All these synth snobs and connoisseurs are missing the point because from past experience with roland hardware and producing electronic music and beats... the jd xi is not a digital synth or a drum machine or an analog synth. it's just enough of all these things to easily get ideas, produce and create. In essence jd xi is a high quality groove machine. there really isn't a synth that comes to mind that doesn't require other pieces of gear or a daw to make a beat, leads, Bass, and effects. Sequence everything, record multiple ways, create an infinite number of unique sounds of your own. Even with bad reviews it's selling well to amateur and pro alike, price staying steady at $499. I wish the synth snobs (The I need a full piano worth of keys and it has to weigh 120LBS or it's a toy, crowd) Would just put a sock in it or review it as something that's not exactly a synth but a little bit of everything you might need to produce a dance track that sounds banging in one place. it's great for EDM/IDM performances it's great to have in a studio to a little something extra. JD XI does not meet everybody's standard of perfection and functionality, but don't basically come across like it's useless just because it's not the size and weight of a grand piano. In conclusion love the keys because if they did put full size weighted keys and a big heavy metal case, I probably wouldn't be able to afford it. They did a solid job with the keys and build they ended up with, i'm fine with the compromise.

There is something not said.....midi chords come out of the xd xi...THAT´s GREAT...but you CAN´T TRIGGER THOSE CHORDS FROM AN EXTERNAL KEYBOARD O SEQUENCER into the JD XI...it sounds ....but chord are not recognizable as interactive chords if you send them thru the midi in of the JD XI. The only way to use the interactive chords is from the keyboard of the JD XI ...so...you can´t record sequence of chords (for example with an external midi sequencer)

Completely different synth to be fair. The JD-XI is a groove box style synth. The XA is a flagship synth. Yes the sequencer isn't the best. But you can always use something else to sequence your synth :)

@@ranzee I think the sequencer needs to be brought up to where you can at least transpose and have cord recognition at this point all the stock beats that are in the JDXI I guess you can call that’s what makes get the title of Groovebox but I think it’s an amazing Synth too I just obtained a JDXA and I am trying to see why this unit is so much more expensive retail and even on the used market because without a proper function and sequencer at least on the level of the other one it does have a coral option for the Volkoder And a lot affects so that vocoder I’m just finding it a head scratcher that there’s not an update to make this unit more fun instead of having to tell myself that if I itemize all the great chipsets in there it just seems that it’s hard to get it going, and I wish Roland would fix it

There are many internal beats on the little guy I love the beauty of the four analog engines in the digital engines in the Volkoder and the effects but I also don’t mind to have a little bit of creative conscience already included and sequencer that is at least as good as the little guy currently and I think it can be squeezed in there fairly easily and I guess if you had to worry about running out of room, I guess you could forsake the constant but I don’t think that really Hass to happen especially with maybe even a USB supplementation and download option in the Roland support website were not only sounds are available, but some pretty nice beach contact as well It’s a pricey keyboard and I think it needs some updated support.
