A live jam showcasing the interactive chord feature that came with firmware V1.5. The performance is done in one take (no edits) with the following gear:
Roland System-8, Roland JD-XI, Roland System-1, Roland MX-1, Roland TR-8, Korg Minilogue, Korg Electribe ER-1, Waldorf Streichfett, Strymon BigSky, EHX Small Stone, Lexicon MX-200.
Recorded in Ableton Live via MX-1 USB connection on a Mac.
There is another video which shows me explaining how to use the interactive chord feature in detail - be sure to check it out: • Roland JD-XI interacti...

Hi Woody :) Thanks. I was struggling a bit with a few parts on this, playing live without edits is always challenging!

I bought a black jdxi and a white monologue and white microkorg, would love to make a track like this. All synths will be unpacked for xmas. Bought the jdxi from watcjing another video and now watching this video I know I wont regret my purchase.

Hi @hedegaard8, I think Xmas is going to be good for you this year! Good luck with the new synths and let me know how you go!

@@ranzee I think so too, thanks! I saw this video and decided to get the JD-xi: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hsCJqplzmrq2hKc.html And then watching your video I see the great possibilities with this little machine. Owned several great synths during the years, but had a 10 year pause in new purchases. Have the D-70, JD800, JD990, Korg Oasys, Korg N364, Korg Wavestation, D-10, D-50, Roland W-30, PolyMoog. Buying the MicroKorg and JD-Xi and Monologue are my first purchases in "small synths".

That's an awesome jam! Sounds are sweet and mesh nicely. And the rhythmic interplay is really cool. Though in places that big washing pad is a tad too powerful really, riding the fader slightly would've been the icing on the cake. Colour me impressed!

Hey Marc :) Thanks for the nice comments :) I was struggling with the compressor and the fader tended to jump - which is an MX-1 issue.

Fair deal, I actually didn't know that about the MX-1, but sounds about right. Always a pleasure to support great music with a thumbs up and a comment ;-)

Thanks for sharing! Really good to learn more about this amazing little box. I've been having fun controlling my 1980s Lowrey Genie console organ(yes, it has MIDI!), with the JD-xi. Unfortunately the Lowrey has some very un-orthadox MIDI implementation, so I'm having a hard time getting consistent results. It works well as a controller though for some of my more modern gear, and more predictable. Anyway, glad I found your channel and look forward to your videos!

Hi @Willis.Wills :) Cool use of the JD-Xi! If you want to tame the MIDI, you can use something like a MIDIPal/MIDIBro - which has an awesome MIDI filter feature. That can be used to just allow note data through - or pretty much whatever you want :) I haven't heard a lowrey for years! If you liked the Jam - this video goes into how I did the setup: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g5qng5OgpsXKe2Q.html. Also there's some more scheduled for later this week - so hope you like them :)

Awesome! Thanks for the tip. I've been considering a Beat Step Pro for a while now, which I think could do the job too, but I'll take a look at the Pal/Bro. I'm also wondering if that 'RetroKits' cable for the volca sample could make it more consistent... I'll try to get a video up myself of the Lowrey set up, it really does have some great sounds. It's pretty great to control it externally too because the drum sounds are pretty good, but it only has cheesy presets on board. The tones are pretty excellent too, and it allows you to layer a dozen common rompler sounds on top of the 3 different types of organ. It gets screwy though with the Jd-xi: I will make a few different 'programs' to switch through as I jam, and sometimes when the program switches all the sounds on the organ change! It's totally unpredictable though unfortunately; sometimes they change to just an organ with a rompler layer, or sometimes I'll get one piece of the percussion kit across the whole keyboard, letting you play it in any pitch. I just picked the thing up for $25 a week or so ago, and I'm still not even sure what the exact model is, but it was $25 very well spent for sure!

why did you not use drums from xi btw? i'm thinking you don''t need external drum machine for such a simple beat? am i missing something?
@ranzee

Great question! The JD-Xi has some great drums, and also the sequencer is cool. However, the drum sounds are just samples and you don't get a lot of sonic sculpting ability with them. I definitely could have used the drums on the Xi. I didn't because the TR-8 has quite a lot of features that allow you to change the timbre of each drum part - for example: the kick has tone, attack, decay and compressor.

Quick question. How does the jdxi fair as your master clock / central point for your studio? Or is it just for live jams?
@ranzee
@ranzee 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, I usually have something else as a master clock - like the MPC Live or a PC/Mac running Ableton.
