When I sample sounds, on whatever sampler, I always test the samples in a musical context. How a bass sound sounds alone don't mean anything. A sound might sound awesome on its own, but in a mix it might be totally wrong. And vice versa.
I've always found the S-10 perfect for bass. A short sampling time, fast and easy to sample. Early Roland S-samplers have a sonic signature I've always liked. It sounds great while it can also cut through a mix.

I am always amazed at how crucial and important a suitable bass is. Or to put it another way, how noticeable an unsuitable bass immediately is when I try to arrange something myself. The bass from the S-10 sounds great and like a timeless classic! 😎🎹

Where is the original source sound from? I’d like to understand how different the original source sound is, compared to the sample coming from the S-10. And what has been done to that sample, if anything. Roland synths from that era still look really good. The black metal chassis holds up very well in my opinion. The D series, the W-30, the S series etc - smooth and cool, both to the eye and to the touch!

this video is very educative “WHO KNOWS KNOWS” and invite people to open their mind and find creative ways to make new sounds with different overtones/timbers, because the most important thing and the only chance to diversify from the heard is by CREATING NEW SOUNDS and vintage samplers are KING.

I couldn't agree more. I am actively using my Roland S-220 (same generation as you S-10). I have to say fitting it with a USB Floppy disk emulator has totally transformed its ease of use. I mostly use it to sample and recall sounds I've created on either my Model D or Pro - One synths. It sounds great adding some subtle, very musical character to the sound. You also get near instant recall and polyphony added in the bargain!

Is the sound very different from or rather similar to the other 30k/12bit S series samplers from Roland? I still have my S330 somewhere and loved the sound. Not gritty at all but very smooth with epic low end especially when played way below the root note. Maybe because of its sophisticated interpolation algorithm which I never heard again on any hardware samplers or sample players including current Roland gear.

as a MKS-100 user (rackmount S10) I'm curious as well. I think S220 still has QD and can read S10/MKS100 patches. S330 was a limited S550, but both seem much enhanced from earlier models, and even have a sequencing package available?

It sounds exactly like the other 12-bit S-samplers from the time. It's way faster to work than any of the other ones though and it's the only Roland S-sampler from the 80s with an arpeggiator.

@@EspenKraft Yeah as I heard it automatically finds useful loop points after sampling. On the S330 you had to do that manually. Although sample editing with a monitor attached always gave me that "living the future" vibes ;)

Damn I need that retrokits bad. I’m in the process of re arranging my studio and just came across a big problem, my mmt8 is just too darned big. I can get it on the top tier of my new 3 tier a frame beside my vc-340, but I would sooner buy me the rk-08 which will fit on any of my synths or midi controllers with plenty of room to spare.

the S-10 and it's brother the MKS-100 are truly excellent for bass sounds. something about the input section just gives it HEFT if you drive the input. almost makes up for how heavy and miserable they are to move and store

I've heard you and others say a popular thing to do in the 80s was to sample analog synths, then use those samples in the track. But why? If you already have a Mini Moog, why not play bass on that. Why sample the Mini Moog, then play that sample? As someone who started in the 2000s, samples always seemed the cheap knock off. Someone uses their sampled JP8 pad because they don't have a real JP8. Etc.
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 3 ай бұрын
Layering different sounds then sampling that back were they key ingredients in 80s synthpop and pop in general. Sampling was cutting edge and made it possible to create totally new sounds. It made the sonic canvas much bigger. I get that you don't get it, not being from the 80s, but I am. I know how it was. The MiniMoog didn't have midi. You sampled it and now you both had midi and a sound that cut through the mix in a new way. In live situations you triggered drums from samplers, you could fly in background vocals, only the sky was the limit. I like to make my music as close to the 80s sound as possible. To do that I use samplers. Analog synths were used less and less as the 80s drove by.

@@EspenKraft Wasn't trying to be critical. I legit didn't know, and was sure you would. I didn't think about layering. Today, it's nothing to route a MIDI track to multiple VSTs, but I understand how big of a pain that would have been with physical hardware. Thanks for the new perspective. Love your channel!
@EspenKraft
@EspenKraft 3 ай бұрын
I didn't assume you were critical as such either. ;-) I've got this question many many times and it's hard to fathom how awesome and magical sampling was in the mid 80s. A whole new world of sounds opening up. The creativity and sound palette just exploded.
