Tim - titanium does not hold help well to screw use over time. It’s a compromise manufactures have to make when using titanium. It’s not an issue that has to do with being cheap, but rather material consideration that is made when choosing to manufacture with titanium.

The SLGA001 also comes with a dark blue silicone strap, that's how I wear mine. 5 day power reserve with a temperature sensor inside to account for temperature changes, I'm at 0.0 s of timing discrepancy after 1 month on the wrist. It's actually the first piece with the 9RA5 movement inside, this makes it a valuable collectible.

This is very timely video for me - I purchased an SLGA001 yesterday and because I am currently overseas, had it shipped to my Dad, who owns a Deep Sea James Cameron. It will be about two months before I get to collect it from him, but it will be interesting to see which of the two watches he lets me take away :) (I’ve told him he must wear the GS on a regular basis to make sure there are no warranty issues before I leave.). I really like the deep sea but always found it a bit too too heavy for me since I wear my watches a bit on the loose side (keeps spinning around to the bottom of my wrist). As much as I fully agree the DS has by far the better bracket and clasp, if it were mine I’d need to switch it to a thicker leather or rubber strap that provides enough traction to keep it from spinning. I didn’t have the same problem with the GS in the 5 min I wore it around the botique. I think it’s the combination of the case shape and titanium that just makes it feel more wearable to me than the DS. I love them both! Now I need a Planet Ocean.

In order to afford a Deepsea JCE, I had to let go both a Submariner and a Milgauss. 2 years have passed and no regrets whatsoever. The dial, the bracelet..simply gorgeous. Chunky? Indeed...titanium...ceramic...white gold...platinum...and steel...and it is not as popular as the Submariner and the SD43.

I was thinking about the Grand Seiko and this video made me pull the trigger. Ordered today from my favorite AD, watch was in stock, got a very nice discount over MSRP, free shipping, watch will be here in a few days. Try that with a Rolex diver. Not only do I prefer the Grand Seiko (no offense Tim), but I prefer to do business with an organization that respects the customer. Disrespecting the customer seems to be a core brand value and marketing strategy at Rolex.

The GS looks better on your wrist Tim. This is a fair & thorough review... Fantastic job as always Tim. For my collection I wanted one refined Dive watch, actually for rec. diving~ from my finalists: GS SLGA001, S-Dweller 43, Pelagos LHD & Seiko LX SNR045... I chose the LX. The rolly & tudor both (easly) have a better constructed bracelets ("structurally imposing" is a good description). Although the GS & LX have a more easily functioning bracelet for diving and the (huge) crown is better for gloves. The the LX (particularly the SNR045) is a MUCH more interesting watch than any of them. Pelly LHD owns the best design. SD has the gravitas. The GS is the best finished. But the LX is the best package for a refined and most USEFUL dive watch. The only down side to the SNR045 (green dial & bezel)~ I get ALOT of unsolicited and unwanted "hulk" references... And in those cases, I'm sure to take off the watch for them to hold and look at the beautiful dial that kills any dive watch competition... And follow up with: "If I wanted a hulk, that's what I'd be wearing."

In my opinion, a technical and quality comparison can always be "contaminated" with the cost ... if it is more expensive, obviously more quality is expected. Cost-value is a different analysis, since it can allow to have similar product characteristics but at a convenient cost. Rolex is a brand that endorses luxury status, perhaps GS is not in the same proportion, but its quality is indisputable. Thanks Tim

New to the channel, thank you for the well worded and presented comparison. Despite my respect for the GS and the spring drive accuracy, the 600m of the GS are no match for the 3.9k. The SD DS is a heavy and tall watch, and even though the latest version with 22mm lugs wears better than the 21mm early versions, it's still not very comfortable. It's nearly 18mm height isn't the best during winter months but the WR rating is such that the tall case was inevitable. I own both 21 and 22mm and can say that none can be my daily beater. The GS , which I do not own looks great and for me would have been ideal if the case was max 44mm. The large cases imo are a thing of the past, moderate sizes are and will always be more appealing. A German Sinn U1 with 1000m WR is at 44mm and with a relatively slim case. Why would Seiko build such a bulky watch...

I own a rolex deepsea jc and sea-dweller red! it is impossible to compare a quartz movement that loses 30% of its value while it is still in the store and an additional 50% as soon as you buy it is in vain! the feeling when you put on a rolex is light years from a seiko! they raised the price 10x and the quality is below 3000 euros! and that's why I can't move forward! hi beet with the inscription marinemaster sold with a superb bracelet in a monobloc case would be a step forward !only a fool would choose seiko over rolex

Both too big for me, but if based on looks, the GS takes the prize. The GS movement is also clearly superior. On another note, Rolex is an odd company. They put a cyclops on the Sea-Dweller but left it off this Deepsea? Makes absolutely no sense, which tells me that putting it on the Sea-Dweller was completely unnecessary.

I'm very late to dance, but GS all the way. I have owned both, but that spring drive accuracy and the second hand sweep is awesome. Translate the "The case feels indestructible" to the Rolex weighs a ton, the GS in titanium makes so much more sense. SLGA001 is my everyday wear watch, and I enjoy it so much more on my 7.25 inch wrist than the Deepsea. The clasp is a little disappointing, the overall watch finish is worth the trade off. The color of the face of GS is absolutely beautiful. A month on the wrist and it has ZERO seconds of deviation. Bought mine new old stock at a steep discount, and it was 1/2 the price of a pre-owned deepsea (not like you could actually get your hands on a new one at list).

I love the GS - seen it many times & tried it on many times. The design is something to behold, same language as the 44GS, just beefier & more "contemporary". Technically it's a tour-deforce & it's damn sexy in a tool-watch kind of way. That sweeping SD seconds hand is mesmerizing, stealthy NAVY/BLACK (in some light) sunburst dial...WOW. You can talk "brand caché" all day long & brand recognition by those who aren't watch-nuts, all day long......but therein lies the problem with (cult of ) ROLEX (similarly to the cult of APPLE in a way...), just because it's popular, does not make it the "best" or most suitable. As Tim said, buy it even if you don't want it (WHY?!) & sell it at a profit (to a person who really wants to buy one?!)...why not pass on it & give someone else the opportunity. Me, buy a watch at over list price? - never! & life's too short to be spending months / years on a waiting list for something collectors tell you is "better" that another. There are better way more options out there if you look - but then again, I've never been a "sheep" & followed the popular choice.

Great review. However imo the GS is simply a far better looking watch. Better proportions and finish. The DSSD is still an ugly duckling. I also think that the world is moving away from respecting luxury brands. I and many friends who have Rolex choose not to wear them much as there is an undertone of uncoolness in displaying wealth. Grand Seiko flies under the radar here. I'm 50 something, have collected and loved my time with Rolex, however I think it's pinnacle has passed years ago. Too flashy now and the brand ruined by flippers. Love GS watches for all they bring too the market, and the fact you can actually buy at a dealer for retail or less.
