Contact tmosso@thewatchbox.com for pricing and availability; Either I have it, or I can get it! Rolex vs Grand Seiko has been a marquee title fight from the first day that watch buyers and watch sellers decided to compare the best luxury watches from Switzerland and Japan.
New for 2017, the 50th anniversary Rolex Sea Dweller 126600 marked the return of the famed "Red Sea Dweller" to the Rolex catalog. Water resistant to 1220 meters and equipped with the Sea Dweller's signature helium gas release valve, this is a luxury dive watch for the 21st century that pays tribute to the finest Rolex sports watches of the 20th century. A unidirectional diving bezel with Cerachrom ceramic insert allows easy tracking of time while resolutely resisting scratches.
Rolex fits an automatic caliber 3235 to the Sea Dweller. This mechanical movement features a 3 day power reserve (roughly 70 hours), hacking or "stop seconds" for precise setting, an a quick set date mechanism with Rolex cyclops eye magnifier.
Each Rolex Sea Dweller 43mm includes a stainless steel Rolex Oyster bracelet and diving clasp with both glidelock for incremental sizing an fliplock for full extension over a diving suit.
The Grand Seiko Spring Drive Diver SBGA229 was launched as the SBGA029 in 2008 and refreshed with a new "Grand Seiko" exclusive dial for 2017. This 44mm stainless steel luxury dive watch includes a full stainless steel diving clasp with incremental extension for use over a diving suit, and the SBGA229 is rate water resistant to 200 meters.
Inside its Zaratsu polished steel case, the Grand Seiko Spring Drive caliber 9R65 spins away with quartz watch precision and mechanical watch soul. This unique caliber is accurate to +/-15 seconds per month, and it teams automatic winding with a three day (72 hour) power reserve. A 30 jewel caliber built by a Grand Seiko watchmaker, the Spring Drive system's visual hallmark is the uninterrupted smooth sweep of its second hand. A power reserve indicator on the dial ensures that the owner will not take the plunge while low on mainspring energy.
It's Rolex versus Grand Seiko today on Watchbox Reviews!

WatchBox Reviews Hi Tim, the GS definitely has a lot going for it however I think they haven’t yet nailed the styling of their diver range like their dressier pieces. This version of the SD is ideal to me and god forbid Rolex should remove that red line, its secondhand price will double overnight which will never happen to the GS. The Watchbox asking price for the SD is proof enough of its investment potential.

Having both brands in my collection I will agree with your decision wholeheartedly. When Grand Seiko, more broadly in the US and internationally, establishes itself as an aspirational brand Rolex may wish they’d flooded the market with stainless steel sport watches when they could move them. Love both brands, each have their place, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating so I suggest watch enthusiasts go taste a Grand Seiko and find your own personal proof and truth. Thanks for sharing Tim. Cheers.

Wishful thinking. Costs more to maintain a GS than any Rolex. Most watchmakers can service the Rolex movement with their eyes closed. The Grand Seiko will forever be an expensive service proposition. If I'm going to shell out $1,000 USD for a service, I'll stick with a JLC or higher.

@@Chris-es3wf The thing is, the Rolex has to be serviced every 7 years or so latest. The GS Spring Drive has less friction in the drive train and will not lose accuracy at all even after decades due to the ingenious construction of the Tri-Synchro-Regulator. If a spring drive is not forcefully damaged by accident or willingly, it is estimated that it will run perfectly for about 50 years.

Chris Hi Chris, thanks for your comment. Not sure how much a service for a Grand Seiko costs, never had to service mine and don’t know anyone else who had to service theirs, they are practically bullet proof, as are Rolex divers. Perhaps you did your homework on the servicing costs, I rotate my watches so I rarely have to service them. My Tag Heuer Carrera chronograph (daily beater watch) is 17 years old and is just now running about 6 seconds slow each day. All that said with a $6K dollar saving (retail comparison) and assuming your GS service cost quote is correct and, of course, you can get a steel Rolex sub for retail you’ve got 6 GS services (or 3 more nice watches) in reserve if you buy the GS. 6 service intervals is a lot longer than I’m going to live for sure, of course you may be considerable younger than I Chris. I own both, as I’d stated I love Rolex watches (own a two tone bluesy & a day-date, had many others I sold) but if you can ignore the brand name and concentrate on what make a watch truly great you’ll find the Grand Seiko is just a better watch. Perhaps not the best watch for you or everyone else (emotional appeal, public recognition, aspiration branding play a role) but superior in all objective measurements none the less. Just my opinion based on years of ownership; but remember always buy what YOU love and enjoy the hell out it!! Be well Chris.

I agree with you Marc; GS leads in the luxury sports watch class. Obviously, a cheap quartz watch can keep better time, but nobody's seriously considering a $6,000-$11,000 watch as an alternative to a $200 quartz. The question is which **luxury** class product is the most precise while retaining the qualities of a luxury timepiece. Comparing a cheap quartz to a Grand Seiko or Rolex is missing the point; a $65,000 Corvette is far faster than a thoroughbred Triple Crown winner, but the horse is worth $20,000,000; factors other than outright speed matter here as surely as factors beyond absolute precision matter in the case of the watches. The fact that you're even comparing the GS with a watch twice its cost speaks volumes for it. Personally I'd like to see a SBGE201 style bezel on the SBGA229. With the addition of a fully illuminated, sapphire crystal capped bezel, reasons to buy the Rolex would dwindle down to merely investment (assuming the current bubble doesn't burst once the new sink hole of China is filled) and bragging rights. For me the GS is the Nissan Skyline of the watch world: It does almost everything better than traditional luxury purchases, for less money and is the smart choice for real enthusiasts who like to admire their own choices rather than wanting other people to admire them. One last point, you're less likely to get mugged for the GS - something that's becoming a real problem for Rolex owners, even in nice areas.

Judged as watches I would go with the GS. It is just a special piece. As a purchasing decision there is some sense to the Rolex as a new purchase given the second hand residuals are so strong. That said, the GS is already half the price (new), technically the superior watch , and if purchased second hand, represents stunning value for money given the irrationally steep devaluation of GS watches in the US and European markets.

@Roughdraft214 5 жыл бұрын
You can judge a watch simply on its size. Watches can appear large or small, lug to lug is probably more important because that determines how it fits on your wrist. The dial size plays a huge factor in watch size appearance, a larger case with smaller dial will appear small even if it’s a larger watch (size) while a smaller watch can appear larger if it has a larger dial. Anyway I never let the size alone determine if I can wear a watch you just have to wear it and see.

For me, GS wins hands down. Tried them both recently and, as much as I love Rolex watches, I think that the price tag of this SD is simply an overkill. Plus, Rolex added that awful cyclops lense, so the only distinctive feature of SD is now gone. Also, 43mm and overall thickness seems pretty ridiculous for anyone, except hip-hop performers, maybe some sportsmen...etc. GS is simply way more classy watch and the case finish is superior. Add to that maybe the most interesting movement on the market and we have a winner here! Btw, I totally agree that the bracelet is much better on Rolex, and its quality is definitely top-notch, but simply it is too large and chunky, as well as overpriced... Anyways, big thumbs up for the review!

I agree with everything you wrote: good summary! For my money, GS just offers a more appealing watch, and I'm 100 percent certain that the SD43's Cyclops Eye was included solely to create an obvious distinction between this and the Deep Sea. I never really "got" the 50th anniversary Sea Dweller since it replaced the SD40/116600 with a watch that's uncomfortably close to the Deepsea in size and appearance. Plus, for 2018, the Deepdea features reduced lugs and gains the 70-hour caliber 3235 from the SD43... which makes them even more similar... Best, Tim
@damachine3
@damachine3 5 жыл бұрын
@@the1916companywatchreviews I thought they included the cyclops because they finally could. Perhaps both reasons. It may be closer to the new Deepsea with the size (although I really do notice the thickness difference) and the 3235 movement, but it needed to differentiate against the Submariner at the same time. My new (2018, 126660) Deepsea has differentiation with the cool James Cameron dial, no cyclops, and those ugly words they put on the face. ;) Perhaps that all means it's tough to have room to differentiate when you're in the middle. As for differentiation, at least the SD43 has the red line to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. Mine also has the Mk1 dial, which is only offered in the first year of production. I really love my SD43 and I love my James Cameron Deepsea...and I also love my other diving watch, my Submariner Hulk. I also love my...anyway. ;)

In all fairness Vukota, who is *making* you buy a Sea Dweller? You don't like the size or the price? You could buy a Submariner for over four grand less money. Because you don't actually *need* a helium escape valve do you? Although honestly, I think you're confused, I've tried on the SD43 and it simply isn't as big as you are implying, unless you have tiny tiny wrists. But again, it's a luxury tool watch, for extreme professional divers. The Submariner is more than adequate for 95% of divers, and still rated 100m more than this Seiko. Let's be real, Rolex also defined this market space. Seiko is merely an interloper trying to cash in on a dive watch trend. Go find me some photos of the early deep divers wearing a Grand Seiko back in the day. As for the 'overpriced' argument, that's just stupid. I just went to a very popular pre-owned luxury watch retailer; they have three SD43 watches in stock right now, and the cheapest is $2K over MSRP and the most expensive is $3K over MSRP. If this watch were indeed overpriced, the value would fall through the floor the day you left the dealership, like buying a Lincoln. When they routinely change hands for MORE than MSRP it is a clear indiction that the price is absolutely fine.

And yet Rolexes have increased in value above US inflation rate for the last two decades.... An investment is defined as: "a thing that is worth buying because it may be profitable or useful in the future". They should not be considered investments when purchased, but they meet the criteria. Only certain Rolex and Pateks cross this threshold. That's simply a numerical fact, regardless of your personal opinion.

@Hue Man: Fact. Bonds are better investments than Rolex, so logically, we should spend our money on those. Luxury watches are illogical, and the current bubble in steel Rolex (and some in precious metal, too) is a product of the last three years. Before that, you could buy steel Subs and Daytonas all day long at ADs. Expecting the current market to endure is self-deception, and I advise collectors to look at Rolex the same as any luxury brand; owning them will cost you money one way or another. You can get in and out quickly -- break even or perhaps make a buck -- but those who buy to own need to acknowledge that the current marketplace won't endure indefinitely. Best, Tim

@@Chris-es3wf As a consumer, you have to consider the fact that the dealer is not going to pay you his retail price if you sell the watch. (Or you have to do it yourself on ebay or Chrono 24 and spend hours photographing the watch, posting the listing, dealing with inquiries and finally shipping it out.) There are also costs for servicing the watch every seven or eight years (or maybe more frequently) that have to be factored in. With all the Rolexes being produced today, it's unlikely that the watch will go up in value, unless there's something that makes it odd or rare.

I tend to wear watches 24/7. Between the two, the GS is far more comfortable on the wrist, and under your head at night. With reference to their respective 4000m to 200m WR ratings, the difference is abundantly clear. The Rolex Sea Dweller was designed as a substantial luxury tool watch possibly used in harsh conditions while the refined Grand Seiko Spring Drive Diver was designed for normal everyday use, and wears much easier as a result.

Yeah, I noticed that too. I have worn a Sub since the early '90's. Both 5 and 6 digits. Never could sleep comfortably with any of them. Now, I hardly take my GS of my wrist anymore. I simply do not notice it while sleeping. Strange but true. The bracelet may feel less sturdy but I think they were after comfort first while still being more than tough enough.

I am more aligned with this review better than the one by another channel. So, similar to this conclusion, my opinion is: I own a Rolex SM and GS SBGA031, (Titanium and prettier face), for about 4-5 years each. Hands down, I like GS by far, because of 1) the extendable clasp when I wear diving wet suit, 2) brighter luminosity underwater, 3) the accuracy without having to adjust the time each month, 4) super impressive technology, 5) overall more interesting to look at than the plain Rolex SM. (BTW, I doubt the difference between 200m and 300m is that big of a deal, because no one goes that deep anyway, and I've had no problem going down to 30m with either one of them. And the titanium clasp of GS does NOT feel less of a quality than RSM at all. Also, the 44mm size does not feel or look 44mm.) However, Rolex appreciate in price overtime. Mine is close to doubling in value in the last 5 years. I don't understand it, but it is what it is, (and I'm not complaining). Conclusion: Get the Grand Seiko for yourself, and get the Rolex for you and your kids. Now that I have a couple of entry level luxury watches, one from Switzerland and one from Japan. What dive watch should I buy next, other than these two countries? Italian Panerai?

For the proposed money of the SD, you can simply have the best of both worlds. Buy the GS for the tech/innovation and value and use the extra 6-7k you're saving over the Sea Dweller and buy an Explorer for the investment and implied gravitas.

If you're an actual deep diver, the Sea-Dweller clearly wins. I also prefer the cleaner look of the Rolex. The spring drive does a hell of a lot for the GS and I have the Snowflake, so I should be bias towards the GS, but in this race, I find the Sea-Dweller a much better option.

When you pay 10 to 12K for a rolex you don't really know where the money is going but having known the history behind Spring Drive movement and their finest quality you can easily understand where your every penny spent on a GS is going. The way GS specially their spring drive is getting popular so rapidly I really don't think they will be worth the same in ten years time, definitely time and a half if not the double in value. Cuz demand is getting high and high every day for these pieces. Can't wait to buy myself GS SBGA415, can't think of any other watch since I have seen that beauty. Quality screams on your wrist and no object sparkles and plays with the light the way Zaratsu finish does. People who have no understanding about horology even they get fascinated by the look and ask you what watch are you wearing? That's called a Luxury watch.

You could buy a Tudor Pelagos, have that titanium you want, pay half the price of the Grand Seiko. Arguably a far better watch. As for what Rolex is worth, the market has spoken on that. They sell out instantly, and sell for thousands over MSRP on the used market. They wouldn't be doing that if people were not willing to pay for it.

On the GS, the backside of that minute hand seems overly wide and covering everything in it's path and in this video covers so much of the hour hand that it makes the hour hand looks so short and fat ... really don't like that. Also, that bracelet is ugly with what appears as a poorly designed clasp with no fit of closure fitting into the clasp as in the Rolex. I own the SD43 and comparing this GS to the Rolex seems like an insult.

One you had one Rolex you had them all! The JLC bracelet is a bit different from what it appears to be. The pins in the JLC are spring bars, not proper pin-and-sleeve retention. That's actually a great thing since the JLC bracelet can be sized with only a strap tool and ends up being incredibly user friendly; the true pin sleeve bracelets must be sized with a bracelet block, a punch, and a rubber mallet. Tim - wow these get you thinking for sure. Excellent competition and presentation - both pieces are tough and truly spectacular productions by Rolex and Seiko. - Rolex is amazing- however for me- it has become uncomfortable to think of wearing a tool sized Rolex daily " in the field as your daily piece " - this is because it has evolved into such a status symbol and it has reach such a tremendous price. On the other hand the Seiko is very tough, extreme quality, easier to read it in the field, is half the price, and lacks the negative status connotations you can run into when its spotted real world settings . You can grab the Seiko comfortably and confidently to wear daily without second consideration in nearly every situation - it also will retain enough value over time to be my clear choice of the two. 👍. Thanks Tim for another competitive title fight.

It's true; Grand Seiko under promises and over delivers. Plus, the watch has more character. GS is like a small batch bourbon, and Rolex is more like Jack Daniels. Jack is known for decent quality and absolute -- uniform -- consistency from bottle to bottle. Grand Seiko is more like a Knob Creek or Hudson Baby Bourbon; fewer units, more variation from bottle to bottle (model to model, to keep our comparison straight), and a different experience than a major brand blend. @@algorithm007ify Definitely.
