The Slate dial with the blue hands is exceptional. Works casually with a polo shirt or a business suit. A great addition to any man's wardrobe.

I own the blue dial version and absolutely LOVE it. It just feels so special and luxurious compared to the sub. Honestly I feel the YM is the best model in the Rolex catalog.

I picked one up 4 months ago now......Rolex Yacht Master 40 mm with the sun burst 'slate' grey dial. (Rolex like to call it Rhodium) I'm absolutely loving it. The 'slate' dial is stunning and with the ice blue secondhand it's mesmerising. It's my second Rolex.

Hi Chris is the slate dial the same as the rhodium dial ? I'm looking for a YM 40mm @ retail I only can find slate and on the grey market I'm finding rhodium dials.

RHODIUM DIAL. Stunning timepiece which needs to be witnessed up close and personal to really appreciate. Extremely under the radar but It will definitely gain serious traction among enthusiasts in the near future. Just my opinion. Be well : )

Just got the blue version! Its a Yacht-Master for christ sake, the color of the ocean is the way to go and it suits this watch perfectly. How come this watch is so underrated? It blows my mind.. Great review, thanks.

The rhodium one makes the watch appear bigger than it is. The blue dial makes the watch seem smaller. Rhodium is more classy/dressy, blue is more sporty/casual

They officially called it "dark rhodium" before after the coloring method of a brass movement. I guess it's only a name change and the color stayed the same. I got on the list for this one today!

I own the blue dial. When I put it on a navy nato strap, it gets noticed way more than just the bracelet.

Was never a fan of that bezel color, but having one uniform colour with the dial matching the bezel makes it a bit more appealing to my taste.

I honestly don’t think the Yacht Master is an alternative to the submariner but an upgraded … the case, size, dial … everything is higher up… now the bezel, it’s a Platinum (precious metal) vs a ceramic bezel but today every brand is utilizing in their divers … The Yacht Master is without a doubt an upgrade from the sub

Rolex call it a "Rhodium" dial but it is indeed slate. I personally like the sunburst cobalt blue dial with red seconds hand. Reminds me of the 4th of July! Regardless, both look sick in person and are instant classics. I foresee a two-tone 40mm Tahitian DMOP dial in the pipeline at Rolex now as it was discontinued in the 2010 timeframe. Agree with the comments below, very underpriced whether secondary or new.

Now, the YM is almost impossible to get at the AD, as well. I managed to pick a blue one up at the airport Tax Free last June. Couldn't be happier! Excellent review as always!

@@antonichow304 yes! I have to agree. It wasn’t even on display, I asked the guy “randomly” for the YM and he said “he might have something in storage if I can wait for 30 mins”. Good thing I still had 2 hours till my flight. I went back and lo and behold, there it was; the only sports stainless steel I ever saw in the wild. 30 flights later; I never saw a stainless steel model in the airport again. Haha

@@ManoloRafaelnow days, I don’t understand how the airport duty free locations stay in business. I travel a lot of the world, ie Europe and Asia. Every single airport location I have been to has models “for exhibition only”. I literally walk in and say “do you have ANY watches for sale”….the answers are always the same…”no”. Here and there, I’ll find a two tone “ugly watch”…but never anything more. I just don’t get the business model, and how these locations stay open. The only people that can go to them, are people with a ticket to somewhere, it’s not like they are in a mall, and you can check back every day

I think you're right about the polished metals in the bracelet. It's very 'shiney'. I am not too sure about the whole case being in polished metal either. I am not necessarily biased against it, but think brushed metal would be more subtle. The watches themselves are gorgeous enough to carry the beauty aspect. Shiney metal is not needed. However I never saw one in briushed metal, so it's hard to really compare.

The other key difference v’s the SUB is the case. The case is thinner and more curved.

The blue dial changes color like the sea depending on light and angle, sometimes it's dark and almost black, sometimes it's light blue like a sunny day in carbbean. The red and white pops out like a red buoy or a lighthouse. Therefore the blue dial is much more a homage to sailing and the sea than the gey dial... but taste is personal :)

It's been a while since I've seen that watch but I'd say a color like slate or rhodium with sunray finish will definitely have less legibility than a blue or black dial. That's one of the reasons I heard from YM owners why they prefer the blue.
