I completely understand that Jon puts entertainment over competence first, but god the one thing I can't handle seeing is how he just sends his troops running circular marathons and then gets surprised when they start having asthma during battles

Meh, he lost one in his Medieval playthrough due to gross incompetence. Jon's a hoot to watch, but his abilities in this game are decidedly mediocre.

It's fairly rare that the AI will actually manage to take a settlement off of you in the earlier total war games (so least up to Napoleon)

@@sonofskeletor33 in my opinion he's only mediocre because all the upper echelon tactics involve massive cheese and exploiting the game, rather than competent execution of legitimate tactics

@@gaiamission7200 Not necessarily. There are a lot of Total War tactics than don't necessarily involve cheesing the AI. Managing your economy properly for a start, although that's also very easy on Rome 1. In terms of battles, Jon tends to be very tunnel-visioned and a bit of a one-trick pony. If the AI surprises him in any way, then he usually panics and starts giving units random and contradictory orders. His grasp of encirclement tactics is lacking, and he pays little to no attention to morale and fatigue. And he throws away units too frequently, especially his cav. Using the mini map properly and assaulting settlements are also areas where Jon really struggles. In both cases it's because he tends to get tunnel-visioned and force his way through one gate or down one street, rather than attacking from multiple angles. We saw this a lot in his Medieval play through. Additionally he was atrocious with controlling artillery in that series, he killed more of his own men than the enemy most of the time. Put Jon in a multiplayer battle competition and my guess is that he wouldn't do very well. But it's fine, he's still fun to watch.

And morale. When I play as Gaul the only way that I can beat some Roman infantry heavy armies early game is to wear them out with my cavalry. While their has back keep running at me I run away and rest. Then I charge I to them while I am fresh and they are exhausted and their morale is often steady or even shaken as they are so tired. Then I can mop up units
