While crashing the Capulet party, Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) is entranced by beautiful Juliet (Claire Danes).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The classic Shakespearean romantic tragedy is updated by director Baz Luhrmann to a post-modern Verona Beach where swords are merely a brand of gun and bored youths are easily spurred toward violence. Longtime rivals in religion and business, the Montagues and the Capulets share a page from the Jets and Sharks of West Side Story when they form rival gangs. Romeo (Leonardo DiCaprio) is aloof toward the goings-on of his Montague cousins, but after he realizes that Juliet (Claire Danes) is a Capulet at the end of one very wild party, the enmity between the two clans becomes the root of his angst. He relies heavily -- and with serious consequences -- on his rebel gender-bender of a friend, Mercutio (Harold Perrineau Jr.), and Father (not Friar) Lawrence (Pete Postlethwaite) for protection and support. Romeo is, of course, exiled, and it looks like Juliet will be forced into an arranged marriage with the bland Paris (Paul Rudd). It ends, as Romeo and Juliet must, when Romeo hears a tragic piece of misinformation and brings his suicide wish to what was meant to be Juliet 's temporary tomb. This time, though, the turf and the weapon of choice have taken a turn toward the surreal.

there is such beautiful symbolism in this film. for example the montagues are yellow and the caplulets are blue, as shown in the opening fight scene. but here some fish are blue, some are yellow and some are both, showing the two sides and the crossover between. ❤️

Hey! Awesome observation! I know I'm replying to your comment from five months ago but I just wanted to add another beautiful symbol that an English Teacher of mine once pointed out in this film: Water. Whenever Romeo and Juliet are allowed to be alone together, there is typically water present. Like how they see each other through the fish tank when they first meet, then they fall into the pool together later on that night. I'm pretty sure when their final scene is foreshadowed it is done with a filter giving the scene a watery feel again. As you say, there are some beautiful symbols in this film!

It's literally how all such scenes are filmed. The actor plays to the camera, not the other actor. Claire Danes was doing the same in the closeups where she's seeing him for the first time. I actually find her more convincing.

EVERY guy who grew up in the 90s remembers this scene...Clair Danes was stunningly beautiful. Besides that, not a single word was spoken by Leo or Claire in this entire scene, but thier chemistry, body language and eyes say everything. This scene was a masterpiece. Of all the 90s movies/scenes I've watched...this one stands out... watching this really brings you back to that era...Incredibly nostalgic.

I saw this in the theater in 1996 with my girlfriends. We were all 14. Everyone kept squealing so much at scenes like this that the theater paused the movie and announced they would end it if people didn't stay quiet. We kept squealing and nobody stopped anything LOL. I don't remember any boys in the theater except ones that were on a date with a girl. Soooo many girls in that theater.

0:53-0:56 that scene with the piano in the background is honestly amazing. The eye contact, how the piano changes chords when she looks straight at him, the colour & gleam of her eyes & the blue fish in the background. Honestly one of my favourite scenes it’s so magical. Like the eye contact is so powerful, from Claire looking down to looking straight into his eyes & they both lock eye contact whilst the piano changes into a lower note. & that sound is like the stamp used to seal the whole emotion in this scene. That feeling u get when u see a good looking stranger & u avoid eye contact with each other until that one moment u lock eyes with them for a few seconds & in only those few seconds the butterflies & emotional rush is all happening all at once & then BOOM eye contact ends but those few seconds mentally lasted for hours & have such an impact on ur emotion. Lol anyways I’m waffling see ya.

I may have not understood the words through this movie but, I CAN see how well Leo and the actress playing ‘Juliet’ hit the nail on the head of how two star-crossed lovers are suppose to look at one another.~ ❤️❤️❤️ Yeah call me a hopeless romantic but this scene is how anyone would want to be looked at. Like they they are the spark in this twisted world, the reason you follow with hope in your eyes.~

Ugh I love Baz Luhrman's films because they are so beautiful, they are so visually pleasing to watch. He really does have a talent to create such beautiful films, his use of colour (I think he intensifies the natural colours in his films) is gorgeous, I love the intensity of colour-his films are art

This came out in 96 when I was 12. The girls in my school were SO excited for this. My sister has the soundtrack CD, still to this day, and so many of the songs on it were iconic for the 90's. It's kind of wild to see this movie appreciated more now than back then.

I love how leos eyes follow the small fish to then meet eyes with Claire Danes. Both gorgeous in this scene and with the elegant background song, this to me is considered a masterpiece of a scene. Her eyes, lips and smile, as well as leos as they meet, make this so great. I have watched this like 10 times today and hope to find another beutiful scene just like it. Great acting as well as directing.💯👌🏼
