Tonight, as you sleep in your bed, 1 in every 200 Aussies are homeless. This number of people sleeping rough either on the streets, in shelters/crisis centres and by means of couch surfing has seen an astonishing increase in the city of Melbourne over the past couple of years, plunging many people into a devastating cycle they may struggle to break.
This 30 minute documentary tells the story of a few of these inspirational Melburnians, as well as exploring what we, as individuals and a society, can do to help those in need.
Thanks to Belinda Biffin from Frontyard Youth Services for donating her time to speak with us about this important issue and what her organisation is doing to conquer it. For more information or to donate visit www.melbournecitymission.org.au

Please try and keep the comments respectful! It was my aim in making this documentary not to impose any bias - to include the pure and simple facts with the uncensored opinions of those whom I interviewed. I appreciate your feedback/opinions and love facilitating a conversation about this issue. However, it is disappointing to see inaccurate, hurtful and bigoted remarks that do not contribute to the goal of finding solutions but rather aim to precipitate fear and ostracisation upon already marginalised members of our society. Thanks for your support! :)

Mental illness and disabled. 4.Due to abusive family and relationship 4.Teenagers lost of SUPPORT 5.There is not enough jobs for everybody! 6. Those who lost everything and turn to homelessness, they can't even get to apply a job due to no ID or Address. Try to find out more and see things from many angles, do not allow hater mindset and egoistic over you ? Obviously you are not in their shoes , you can't feel the pain in them ? One thing these agencies need to stop doing is applying bandaid solutions. I was a child when Frontyard started, and they were pretty much nothing but a contact point where you went to call other agencies. They had printouts of housing/aid and you were dumped in front of a phone and that was that. Perhaps if you were lucky you were given a train ticket. I bounced around those agencies as a child for over a decade, and they solved nothing. In fact, they left me with problems as I did not gain experience and knowledge that is required to be a standard functioning adult in today's society. Sure, they gave me a roof over my head, but that was pretty much it. If they were my parents, that would have been considered neglectful. I learned how to survive, not how to live. I learned lessons that nobody needs to learn. The methods one learns to cope in such situations are not transferable, they won't help you find a job, a home or how to maintain effective interpersonal relationships. Sure, I can tell you how to break into a building to get a quiet nights sleep. I can tell you where to park your car so you can sleep in it and not be disturbed. I can tell you a roadhouse where they will let you park, shower and even have wifi. But I can't tell you how to manage office politics and keep your job when some fool is annoying you. The skills I learned, how to deal with troublemakers, let's just say that will get you fired. Homelessness services have a hell of a long way to go.

i experienced homelessness briefly in my mid 30`s. i found a solution to my problem. i packed my bags and left for China as an English teacher for 17 years. I saved every cent, came back to Australia and bought myself a two bedroom unit CASH. i went to Tasmania in 2015, as it was cheap then to buy property in Tassie. The unit has more than doubled in value since then. I still believe too many people hide behind excuses, and dont make the effort to find solutions. Drugs and alcohol ARE MAIN FACTORS LEADING TO THIS LIFESTYLE. If i stayed in Australia, instead of going to China , i have no doubt, i`d be living amongst these poor people now.

Great video, thank you. I believe in creating gardens (and outside/inside workshops, i.e Madrid where one is Tabacalera another is in a park outside) When people have something to do, something to come to, community, when people are socializing around something positive -we start changing the way we think. Learning about green self sufficiency and sustainability, creating and building -it's good for the people and good for the planet. And I bet there's lots of people in the city who would step up as volunteers for a project like that. There are quite a few cities in Europe that are doing things like this. Tempelhof in Berlin has a list of prob. a hundered (or much more) smaller community gardens under it's size in the the city, many of them open for whoever finds their way there -wich usually means that you have a good mix of people working and spending time together. Dignity Village in usa too, is a good example of a pure thought project for homeless people. They come from a different perspective than the usual eco-village, and still with the extra challenges -it seems like the village is working out great! I believe that if people can get a chance to learn how to take care of themselves, and have the opportunity to learn a skill or work on an interest -it will set something in motion. People get new self confidence by creating and by taking part in something, having some responsibility maybe. For me it was drawing and photography that helped me release some of what was stuck. I have been in almost the situation and have felt the struggle, unsafety and the lowering of self confidence and asteem -specially in times with no money while being alone out there. People need to feel like people, and it's surprisingly easy to start feel like a underdog. A community is a place to come home to, no matter if there is an apartment or if you go back to the streets when the night falls. If cities (or people) created cheap laundry/shower places too it would be a BIG help for homeless people. Community is the key, dignity is the key, sustainability and green self sufficiency, skills and good knowledge, art, music, happy times. This post suddenly was very long, just some thoughts though. TY again for the awareness work and sharing.

Twenty three years ago, I arrived here by accident . . . after hitting a car broadside, on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C. I just had arrived via 'space available' military air from Roosevelt Roads Naval Amphibious Base, Puerto Rico to Andrews AFB . . . with my objective being to arrive at Kona, Hawaii to perform in my second Ironman Triathlon. Midway, peddling into D.C., I hit a car, broadside . . . and, used my head, as landing gear after landing on its' opposite side. Father got word of my accident and departed Providence, RI to see me at The George Washington University Hospital - Neuro Ward. He didn't believe I'd survive, when he first visited me . . . in my inconcious state. After his return home . . . he got word of my improvement . . . and returned, to witness that I was now conscious, however in a vegetable state. After one month . . . I'm sorry but this is misleading as Salvation Army do provide a Postal address so Centrlink can pay them. I was homeless for 18n yrs as much as the shelters and refuges suck and are violent I got a place. The lady talking at homeground is totally different real person. I have offered to pay some homeless for accomadation at a boarding house but they have knocked it back but only wanted the money. The Lady at homeground is uncaring and dosn't care whether one is homeless or not.

Sometimes when I can I help homeless people,I'm a Christian born again,I know a homeless guy,he sleeps in a carwash area, sitting on a chair ( 6 years ago,can you imagine that sufering situation?) in the cold city of Bogotá; I feel compasion for him, and I offer him food, clothes, some persons give me used clothes,or toys, for poor children, and I would like to have a house here in Colombia,in order to bless homeles people,God bless them.

Hi I an from Undia . Really sad to see those haoless people. I fully agree with the gentelman when he says the Aussie givernment should first help their own people first wuth housing insread of heloing migrants . The assistance that is given to migrants I am sure is generated from taxes thess poor people have paid when they were earning and hence these people should be the first to receive state benefits and the mugrants .

Realtors are to blame. Speculating should be against the law and realtors should have to have degrees with ethics laws. They should not be able to sell homes to investors instead of homebuyers and should not be able to set rents or home values.

They should also ALL have to provide some sort of housing, especially if the government are putting their head in the profits i mean sand.....the real estates would have at least a property or two on their books at all times with some government assistance. that would be a huge step imo

Bridge housing units. Low cost 10’x20’ prefabricated 8-10 dwelling, 1-bed 1-bath insulated units, each with a lock and key. Set up in inconspicuous places throughout the general areas homeless tend to locate. Not fancy, no not a ‘prize’ but safe, warm structures to give people a place to call home. Can be built for $6-8,000 per dwelling. I live in a city with a wonderful group that built a low cost housing apartment building with 60 units but it cost $23 million! And today 2000 are on the waiting list for the place! We need low cost bridge shelters. Many issues would be solved if the folks had a roof over their head. Also waiting for someone to write the website that groups together 100 households that can chip in $20/mo to care for a homeless person. That would be $2,000/mo.

Quite a number of people I had contact with that was in and out of the justice systems have expressed to me that they would much like to get the education required and become social workers etc. I can never judge these people just because they’ve got a criminal record because as least they still have a life goal. It’s the ppl who have lost their directions in life and couldn’t/wouldn’t want to help themselves( yes I do believe you have to be willing to help yourself before everyone else could help you) that really saddens me.

what homelessness does is leave you on the street and vonerable to everyone else that already has an addiction or is abusive, and people in Parlament have been aware of this for Generations. People need to be kept off the streets, why aren't there stable places of refuse for everyone and the Government crying out we havn't got enough money when they spend Billions on buildings we don't need, is sending out a message to the rest of the world that Australia is heartless in its making of the future.

Homeless since 2005, on the bench, or ground. Many kind people, who have continually shown how to love others, as they have toward me in all that they have done for me. Since the US corporation has given so much to those entering illegally, and the Companies 500 employ the illegal. So they also could have done for those of us who were born here by parents who were born here. The "federal subsidies" = taxpayer money $$ has been used by Corporate powers to make 98% of consumer goods *BEFORE IT GETS TO STORES...so why are we being required to go to stores, and pay for it twice, a 2nd time?? We should now be able to go, now each day and receive just what we need for today.... isn't that right?? God bless you 🤗

The 'solution' is simple. Make 'crown land' available for free (as per the earlier colonists/returned soldiers) and let people get on with building their own houses the best way they can/can afford WITHOUT ENDLESS INTERFERENCE BY BUREAUCRATIC BOOFHEADS AND POLITICIANS.. I've built eight houses (up to and beyond civil requirements) entirely without any 'qualifications' or approvals. The most expensive one cost me $8500 (sic), and recently attracted an offer of $2.8 MILLION (which was rejected by the current owner. The Blackfellas landed here 65 THOUSAND YEARS AGO, and I've never heard of a report that any of them were ever reported to be homeless. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR HOMELESSNESS IN AUSTRALIA...other than 'official' obstruction. If people really cared (and homelessness is but one of several issues.) This country would benefit from a French-style revolution, where all the 'governing classes' are eradicated. PS. I was one of 4 million postwar migrants brought out by Menzies to 'Build the country'. They had NOTHING having just survived the murderous war, and most couldn't even speak English. There was NO 'Social Security': the only promise they had was 'All the work you want'. I don't know of a single one of them that wasn't in their own house in under 5 years (and down to about TWO years!) The ONLY 'rule' was: "If your roof caves in on you don't tell us; the problem is yours". (55 years after I helped my father build our family home it still required a bulldozer to demolish it!)

I do not understand homeless in Australia jobseeker 282.50 a week, 4 bedroom home rent 400.00 a week. 4 jobseeker people get 1130.00 a week between them. It seems each one of them after paying 100.00 rent would have 182.50 a week for all the other things they need and maybe even be able to save some for a rainy day. This is Australia not the USA.
