What I love about the 80s is seeing that even though Hawk achieved everything he always wanted, he is so unhappy. Hawk sacrificed Tim and with that his own happiness.

Regarding the political aspects I suggest a quick wikipedia search for the army mccarthy hearings and assorted involved characters. Parts of the hearings are also in youtube.

And when we find out what Hawk is really up to, it just reinforces how closely personal lives and politics are entwined in this series. And that holds true for the scenes set in the 1960s, 70s and 80s as well. Really brilliant.

Where are your reactions to the rest of this amazing series? I love that Hawk is so keen to stay with Tim that he's happy to put on hold a dream he's held for over 30 years, and is unfraid to hold a naked and bleeding Tim at a time when so many people wouldn't have even gone into the room.

this is such a great series. so well written with amazing characters! you will love and cry over the next 5 episodes. one other you should look at is Angels in America, a very well written small series about gay life in America during the 80s
