I drove that road (no pavement) in 76-78 with my 63 chevy bel air which I bought from my Pastor for 400 bucks. I was stationed at Comsta and Navsta and have many fond memories. I left Adak, but Adak never left me! We had a beautiful Christian group that met in a quonset hut above Comsta, played the guitar and sang in front of the fireplace. We climbed Mt Adagdak, and hiked the tundra breathing the fresh air and drinking water from artesian wells. I wish those moments last forever. So many wonderful people who I've lost contact with (no social media back then) and wish them all well. I dream one day returning for a visit.

Absolutely love this Steve!! You're bringing back so many memories! I used to call this the 8 mile road from hell! I noticed they still never paved it. Lived in the barracks at NSGA. The last turn after it went paved I almost smacked the rail when I lost control of my car in a snow storm and a sliding 360. Loved Adak!

Thank you so much. I lived at the message center complex 1971-1973 did 14 months on the rock. Miracle of a clear sunny day to photograph. It was amazing to see two trees growing. It was the end of my navy hitch. never thought I would see it again. Salute to Chris P Anderson ABC, Minor the super Bowler, CPO Jessy O. Daniels, RM1 Scruggs, RM1 Jerry French and the old man CAPT. Mitchel who Article 15 me for keeping the whole barracks up while drinking. WHOOOOO Yahhhhhh

@@waynehenderson9880 I was curious if I would get feed back from my ship mates. I arrived in Adak 11/71 and left 1/73 --did 14 months on the rock. Made RM2 last increment --I worked at sweepers cove message center--left the rock just before navecomsta was all consolidated at clam lagoon. I remember nights of absconding the duty vehicle and heading to the dump with a case of refreshments and shot guns shooting rats. I never thought I would see the rock again. As I look back I now see J.O. as a very kind person, a man who had a heart for people. Live well friend.

Thanks for sharing! I was seabee in public works 1972-74. I was in charge of remodeling the enlisted club in the bering bldg. I had a part time job repairing bar stools after the many fights. Kept me busy! That road didn't look familiar but it's been a long time.

I also traveled this road many times. Between 1979 & 1992, I was stationed at Adak three times (yep, I chose it). I Worked & lived on the Hill as a member of Naval Security Group Activity, Company I Marine Support Battalion. So my work activities took place out at the Gun (Shotgun) or Zeto Point. From my barracks room during my 1st tour, I had a wonderful view of Clam Lagoon & Zeto. Near the end of that tour, the MarSptBn quarters were moved to another location within the complex, & I lost that view. :-( This all brings back a lot of memories: Mid-rats in the chow hall & afterwards, a movie in the theater, The P Club & the drinking song ("Ya Never Called Me by My Name" by David Alan Coe...LOL), Every so often, there was a surf & turf lunch in the chow hall, the Tunnels under the complex, going "downtown" to the PX, credit union, or phone exchange, seeing the otters in the Lagoon, and the eagles, that you could almost get close enough to touch, tundra stomping, the Marine Cabin, doing the Corps PFT run in the gym, Adak National Forest & the Pet Cemetery, etc. So much to tell, there's not room in this forum. Almost forgot, The Willawaws...winds so strong that they could knock you off your feet! Adak ain't not called the Birthplace of the Winds for nuthin! There's no place in the world like Adak & it was one of my fav duty stations! And considering all that's going on, maybe it shouldn't have been closed. Think I'm gonna take a trip out there next yr. junep_777@yahoo.com

@@detroitmichigan2824 Hi there, if I recall correctly, in the winter of 80, there was a fire on the male Marine barracks wing (as the only female NSG Marine, I quartered with the female Navy folks which was at the opposite side of the 2nd floor...a short distance upstairs from the chow hall & quarter deck). Some of the MarSptBn offices were also in that part of the building...C.O.(Cpt Poole), Ex.O., the company Gunny(Jeff Hazey), & Unit Diary Clerk, etc. The fire happened in the middle of the night. After it was determined that it was all clear & safe, everyone had to help with the clean up, which involved a lot of swabbing the decks of the water used to put out the fire. This took all the rest of the night. A lot of the damage was cosmetic, so the area was quickly habitable, and the male wing returned to business as usual. I think the fire was caused by careless smoking. :-( Was that where you stayed temporarily? It wasn't long after that incident that the MarSptBn barracks (me included) was moved downstairs...off from one of the tunnels, near the P-Club & bowling alley. The offices relocated to right across the road in the main NSGA bldg. Did you also work the 1-1-1-32 winter sched? That was beyond brutal! I didn't drink coffee, as the coffee the guys made would put hair on your chest..LOL! But I did consume much Mt Dew. The off hrs allowed just enuf time to do laundry, maybe run an errand to downtown, go to phone exchange & get a few hrs in the rack. It's quite sad to see the deteriorated & blighted condition of most of the buildings all over the island. The T.V. show, Alaskan Picker filmed several episodes at Adak. Seeing them gutter snipe through all kinds of stuff that was left behind was quite disturbing...at least it was to me. It's hard to believe that there was once 6000 people living on THE ROCK, and it was one of the biggest cities in AK! Currently, there's a seafood processing plant that has personnel working there at various times of year, and of course folks go for hunting, fishing, & bird watching. Plant personnel & toursists stay in upkept houses that were once used as "dependent housing". One can also rent a vehicle to get around. Looking at various Adak videos & reading all the comments is causing me to reminise & miss THE ROCK! Think I'm gonna plan a trip out there next yr. Alaskan Airlines flies out twice a week. Last time I checked, a RT ticket from Anchorage was abt $1200. That would be a lot different than how we got there & back...Reeves Aleutian Airways. Those pilots could fly in any kinda weather. 2nd time I went there, we landed during a white out..YIKES! I kissed the ground when got off the plane!!! Lyric in a Steve Miller song, says "didn't you feel the wind"? Absolutely! After my 1st yr long tour wrapped, I went back to Pensacola/Corry Station for advanced 2631 training and after that...went to Company L in GITMO, which was also a great duty station! Peace out, for now. ~ Cheers & Semper Fi

Thank you, Steve. At 4:58 from left to right - building where RM's and ET's worked; Gym/Theater; Chow Hall; Quarterdeck/Lounge/Dorms B/C/D; Dorms G/H/F/Transit. Stationed at NAVCOMMSTA from Feb1973 to Feb1974. As someone else said, we had everything we needed, if not here then at NAVSTA. Just needed to learn how to use spare time and do it quietly.

I think you had already passed NAVFAC when the footage starts. Anyway, my two oldest boys both caught their first fish (Kokanee) in that lagoon. We all loved watching the otters, especially the babies. Thanks for the ride-along.

Part of the NSGA closure 94-95. Great assignment. Vandalism on island is unfortunate. There's another YT video that claims Aleut Corp is selling homes for $10k. If that was for a Sandy Cove home that would be the newest homes with boiler heat. They were nice homes then. Cost of living there is very high as everything you need or want comes via plane or barge.

Who would be willing to contribute to a gofundme or something so we can get Steven a DJI Mini 2 drone? I understand that the winds are probably to high on a regular basis but he could get some sweet shots on nice days.
