This video demonstrates how to cast on in the round using the long tail cast on (LTCO) so that the jog is minimized, and the tail is woven in to maintain the continuity of the edge.
Four common methods to minimizing the jog are demonstrated briefly, with my favorite three-trick technique demonstrated in detail.

Introduction 0:00
Method #1 - CO an extra st and work the first and last CO st together: 1:03
Method #2 - Swap the positions of the first and last CO sts: 2:00
Method #3 - Join in the round using the working yarn and yarn tail held together: 2:46
Method #4 - Knit the first st with the tail, then knit again with the working yarn: 3:48
Three-trick technique: 4:52

Thank you so much for this. I was taught to knit by my mother, my aunts and my grandmother. It did not stick! Eventually an Austrian lady taught me when I was 18 to knit in the continental manner and that worked. But then I learnt to crochet, and gave up knitting. Recently my youngest niece had a daughter and I wanted to knit some things for her. The knitting was fine and there was rapturous clapping from 7 month old baby on receiving the gifts. But the cold wind doth blow ~ and she'd really like some beanie hats. I've spent the last two days trying to knit in the round for the hat. I've undone it four times. Then I found your KZfaq video, and your written explanation. Happiness is a successful rib knit for this 71year old!

When a lovely German lady taught me the long tail cast on she didn’t use a slip knot, so, I never have. What I have not done before is to twist that first stitch or to make that first stitch the last in the round. That’s neat and I’m certainly going to have a go. One trick I do for almost all cast on when using the cable method is to cast on two extra stitches, then drop the first two stitches that were cast on. That eliminates the knot and makes for a neater beginning. Dropping two stitches is easier than dropping one. Thank you for this.

KZfaq taught me how to knit during pandemic. The more I knit, the more I really don’t know how to knit. (Walking on knots in my socks). Weaving in ends didn’t seem like they’d stay after so many washings. This is very helpful for having nice edge & no knots❣️Thanks!

I don't honestly remember the last time I used a slip knot for a long tail cast on. I usually just knit the first few stitches with both tail and working yarn and am hard pressed to find where I've joined after the project is finished. Nice tip, however. I may need to give it a try. Thanks!

It's so rewarding to see another knitter - especially one with your level of experience and expertise! - to validate what I found to be true through experimentation: lose the slipknot for a more 'seamless' join in the round! When I started knitting in the round about 8 years ago (after a decade of knitting squares and rectangles!), I didn't like the results of any of the techniques I found for the join. I'm a bit of a perfectionist, so I kept looking for better options... Then one day, I was watching a knitting video that had nothing to do with knitting in the round wherein the knitter started a long-tail cast-on without a slipknot. Wait! What was that? I watched it again - because I'd never realized the slipknot wasn't actually necessary!! And it dawned on me almost immediately: that knot was part of the problem with achieving a seamless join! I did a lot of experimenting with the different techniques with the slip knot... and eventually came up with my go-to join that involves casting on that extra stitch to knit the first and last together And knitting the first two stitches with both the tail and working yarn. And it was almost perfect... I can't wait to try your 3 steps for comparison!! Thank you sooo much!

I usually start with a twist instead of a slipknot (same as you! I feel vindicated XD) and cast on one extra. Then I slip the first stitch onto the right needle, pass the last CO stitch over the first as if I were starting to cast off, tighten it up (which gives the first stitch a similar loop at the bottom to the other ones) and then knit on.
