The UK has acquired Naval Strike Missiles (NSM) from Norway to replace Harpoon missiles.

The Skjold (Shield) class was originally not even developed as a military vessel, but as a superfast ferry for the coastline of Norway (high-speed watery bus). It was invented by a small shipyard in the village Hyen on the west coast of Norway. The name of this shipyard is Brødrene Aa (The Aa Brothers). They started developing this in the 70ies. The Skjold(the Shield) top speed is classified, but it is over 60knots

The Corvette isn't really a patrol boat, it's 150 feet long. This would be like our coast gaurd small cutters or something. What america and Britain consider patrol boats are usually less that 60 or 70 feet long.

Yeah, originally they were called motor torpedo boats when they first entered service. Later on Norwegian government ridiculously began calling them corvettes, anybody knows a little bit about military ships know they aren't corvettes. Any real corvette would dwarf that boat if they dock side by side but i bet Norwegian government is careful where they are docked lol..

I can make sense of why the UK does not have them It reaches its speed with help of the air cushion from the exhaust that is blown under the vessel. Both to give a hoover effect and cool "the signature" to be stealthy. So it does not reach its full potensial in the open sea. The fjords are always calm and protected from waves. And its purpose is to strike and hide. Its not easy to hide in the open sea around the UK. BTW Skjold means "shield" in english

Uk would probably benefit from something like the Turkish Ada class. Not as heavy as a frigate, but with similar combat capabilities and smaller magazine. Of course depending on the mission, these may not be a valuable in near peer conflicts as larger Type 26 frigates planned. Norway's southern coasts are well suited for these smaller but well armed defensive craft but they likely don't have the range for the type of expeditionary tasks the UK MoD might want.

Look at Norway's coast line, and look at how close their northern and western coasts are to the Russia Northern Fleet that's based at Severomorsk. To your north, the UK needs to help Denmark and the rest of NATO cover the GIUK gap. To the south, the RN needs to be able to get to Gibraltar, not to mention Bermuda and the Falklands. It seems to meet that the RN needs the larger ships of the blue water navy it's trying to rebuild.

@Luredreier
@Luredreier Ай бұрын
Maybe that could work? It's designed for operation in our protected waters, if there's too much waves and wind it can't reach its high top speed. It's essentially a middle ground between a hovercraft and a catamaran, and hovercrafts aren't exactly suited for rough seas, but the catamaran part does mean that it'll manage without sinking at least. But essentially the idea is to move behind islands and in fjords where the waters are always calm to the position to strike, then do a quick attack out into the open before ducking back behind cover and escaping again in protected waters. Do you have that kind of protected waters in Canada? In the Nordics you can stay within the shelter of our islands and islets almost all the way from the Norwegian-Russian border in the north and all the way to St. Petersburg with only a few exposed areas of the coast where you'd be forced to expose the ship to the elements, and even there we're planning on building a tunnel for ships to sail through to avoid those parts of the coast.

Since it is in the fjords and not in the north sea, I wonder if the design isn't as seaworthy on the ocean as opposed to the more sheltered fjords? That could explain why the UK or the US doesn't have them. Anyone have any other more informed thoughts on this? Thanks 😊
@eckligt
@eckligt Ай бұрын
According to wikipedia, their max speed in calm water is in excess of 55 knots, in sea state 3 it is in excess of 45 knots, and in sea state 5 it is 25 knots. Sea state 5 is what you're likely to see in the North Sea on most days, I think. So they certainly can operate there as well. One of these boats has been loaned out to the US for research and learning, so they have evidently crossed the Atlantic.
@Luredreier
@Luredreier Ай бұрын
You're essentially right about them being designed for the protected waters of the Norwegian coast and not to operate out in the open seas. However they're meant to be able to pop out into the open seas briefly to engage the enemy, and the sea off Norways coast definitely isn't protected, and has really, really bad weather, that these vessels *can* handle. Just don't expect good performance there. A aircraft carrier will be faster in open waters then these. But these are *way* faster in protected waters.
@Superbus753
@Superbus753 Ай бұрын
@@eckligtthey might go into the north sea but would be very vulnerable as they are designed to hide and attack with high speed. Out in the noth see they would be easily spotted and make a great target for any adversary vessel due to its severely decreased speed out there. I would say it can travel through the north sea but not operate efficiently there. Also this design will not allow for long duration missions away from its base as supplies (especially fuel) will run out very quickly.

I think the Royal Navy would be biased against this type of vessel as it is meant more for coastal defense (i.e., only ~800 nmi range) and not blue water missions. The US Navy would not buy them for the same reason. One idea: smaller, unmanned versions of the Skjold. If a bunch of these were carried within an amphibious assault ship, they could help repel naval threats to a Marine landing force, freeing up aircraft for close air support and defense against air threats.

What Niche would this craft fill? This boat has an 800 mile (range 1500km) if it left Quebec, it couldn't reach the Atlantic Ocean. Canada's Naval Doctrine is essentially the Same as Mexico's aka "The USA won't let us be invaded by a foreign Power." Which is Smart and true. Thats why Canada has 4 Diesel subs, 12 Frigates and 2 Offshore Patrol Vessels. plus 20 or so small ships that at most mount 2 .50cals.

3:26 It's not necessarily as well suited for the UK as for Norway although you could probably make use of it too. It would be better suited for Sweden and Finland. Possibly the Canadian west coast or parts of New Zealand too? Possibly Indonesia? I don't know... 5:41 This is *not* a cheap ship. Indeed we planned on making many but it was just too expensive. It's custom made for our conditions, but it would need to come down a lot in price to really have a impact. Honestly they've been a bit of a failure in terms of meeting our doctrine goals... Don't get me wrong, the performance is amazing. But it's just not enough to justify the price, as you'd need way too many of them to cover our doctrinal needs compared to what we're getting for that price... If a redesign would make it possible to mass produce them at a significantly lower cost without impacting the capabilities too much then that would pretty much be perfect for us. 7:35 No, we have 6. That's it. It's just way, way, way too expensive. We *wanted* thousands... But it failed to live up to our goals. But we learn and develop the technology and hopefully a future model will be cheap enough to be mass produced.
