Of your multiple options to fix this rifle, I would probably say chopping the barrel is your best bet. It will be expensive since you will have to locate a Gunsmith capable of not only correctly cutting off the muzzle and chamber portions of the barrel, but skilled enough to reattach the muzzle device and front sight, then have the tools to re-bore the chamber and headspace the rifle correctly. Realistically, any one of these options is going to cost a good amount as you would need a good gunsmith to headspace a new barrel or to counterbore the muzzle without damaging the muzzle device. Of course, there is always another option. If you could have the barrel removed, you could send the barrel itself to a company and have one of two things done. Certain companies specialize in creating new barrel blanks using your old one as a template. Some even reattach the original sights and devices to the new barrel. The other option is having a barrel liner installed which will have the bore completely drilled out, a new bore installed and a new chamber reamed out. It costs a chunk a change but it will make your rifle almost new again.
@carlinglin7289
@carlinglin7289 8 ай бұрын
Just a thought. Sometimes the problem with old military rifles is the muzzle is slightly out of round from years of being cleaned with steel cleaning rods. Trimming a little off the muzzle end and recrowning will restore accuracy. Of course, if the rifling at the muzzle end is completely gone that's not going to help. I've had a couple rifles that that worked on.
@kibbeystovall7546
@kibbeystovall7546 11 ай бұрын
Others have suggested it, but slugging the bore to look for true land/groove diameters and to feel out how worn out the final few inches at the muzzle are will probably give you the best understanding of why you are getting key holing. If you can, it would probably be best to drive the lead slug from the chamber end, that way if the muzzle is worn out you will feel the resistance disappear before you reach the muzzle and if you then decide to shorten the barrel you will have a good idea how far back you need to go to find adequate rifling. There are some relatively inexpensive bore scopes available nowadays, too. If you continue to buy mil-surplus of "C-grade" quality you might find what they can tell you is also very helpful in understanding the actual condition inside the bore.

They are about the only game in town with newly imported batches of surplus. If you are interested in the history of these guns and where they came from then they have some really good deals. If all you want is a shooter then you need to be careful what you buy. Out of about 10 recent purchases from RTI only 3 are not good shooters. That's a wide spread of different firearms in the 100 to 600 dollar range. Great video. If you really want a shooter I would definitely look into re barreling it.

Counterbore would be the best option. If not, you could absolutely cut the barrel down. I have counterbored several barrels in my time. Not sure how to help with the magazine though. Not sure about muzzle break. I would hay counterbore through it. Would just widen the exit hole slightly, wouldn't effect anything I bet.

@@captainmayday4431 Yes long gone are the days when the parts for old milsurp were plentiful and cheap, and gunsmiths who knew how to work on them were easy to find and reasonably priced. I have a short list of Milsurp guns I really want to own one day and every single one ive priced out what it would cost to buy a sporterized model, find the replacement parts and restore it to original, and its always more than just finding an unmolested original anyways. Plus after all that you have a cobbled together mixmaster rifle anyway. The only thing RTI makes sense for is if you're a hobby gunsmith and youre just looking for older stuff to practice on and a toy to screw around with. But the problem there is they price their guns like theyre in much better quality. Theyre not priced like the poor condition project guns most really are.

Without a chronograph, no way of knowing for sure, but I imagine the East Germans had inherited lots of 98k's for their 2nd and 3rd line home guard/Dad's Army units, perhaps. I have fired 303 Brit mg ammo (actually made in Canada)in a no 4 Lee Enfield without any problems, but all of that was 20+ years ago.

I would get a fishing weight very similar to 8 mm. And begin pounding it down the barrel from the chamber side. Get it all the way through and then use calipers to check its diameter. The first key hole shot. As the shooter said, that indicates the rifling is not properly engaging the bullet. In dog years, the bore is worn out. Which is not a rare occurrence in military arms, as many arms were shot a lot (lots and lots of corrosive ammunition) and not cleaned as often as they should. As discussed, I will add replacing the barrel with a not so worn out one would be best remedy. I will add that shortening the barrel will not do much for rifling contact. Not to mention any rifle having a barrel less than 16 inches requires a Federal tax stamp as a 'short barreled rifle'. No, the magazine did NOT explode. The baseplate holder failed (broke) at the mounting point. Mauser Man obviously could not find the missing piece (I am familiar with the phenomenon) but, it appears to be a bent piece of more or less flat mild steel. Probably makable at home - and likely more of a pain than anticipated. Depends on if magazines are available and how much they cost. Just for the record, holding an M16 gives me heartburn and depression. But I'm older.

The rifling often wears closer to the muzzle, as is the case with this rifle. If the barrel is cut and recrowned before the muzzle erosion, it may give it new life.
@OldManMontgomery
@OldManMontgomery 21 күн бұрын
@@8mmmauserman So it seems. This is quite useful if the muzzle is damaged and not 'even' all the way around. However, I have a rifle, Mannlicher - Schoenauer, that had a worn barrel. @strayblackcatsmeow
@strayblackcatsmeow 6 ай бұрын
That was most likely a defective spotweld on the magazine and they should replace it. Did you recover the brass? Shy of torn case venting, there is little force on the missing retainer and I did not see any downward smoke when it happened. As far as Hakim thumb goes, it's highly unlikely as long as you use clips. I don't even bother with the safety unless I am setting the rifle down loaded. However. You are halfway there if you single load without the clip. With the barrel up at an angle, dropping a single in can place the cartridge rim on top of the empty magazine hold open pin if your not paying attention. Press down on the cartridge and the fun begins. The clip keeps all cartridges in front of and safely away from the pin. The only issue I've had with the Hakim is if I take the rifle out of long storage and chamber clean Egyptian brass, it will jam closed until the brass cools. There is no chamber pitting and it drove me crazy until I learned about the Swedish Ljungman AG42. The Hakim is the big brother of the AG42 with ALL the improvements made. Cleaning the Hakim prior to shooting or lightly lubing the first brass eliminated this issue. Use all lubed brass as storing will compromise the powder. This jam issue is explained in the Ljungman development history when they were testing powders. Because of the extraction system the Ljungman has unique chamber maintenance tools in thier cleaning kit that is intended for active field use. I made the equivalent for 7.92 cal. so case l can leave my brass clean and have no more cycling issues. The Hakim IS Swedish designed and was built on Swedish tooling under thier guidance. That is why the Ljungman AG42 manual is the best to use. The zero at 300 meters is also correct. Just exhausted my Egyptian surplus so I am now using weaker non corrosive modern rounds.

Hey throw us an update :) Id be happy to tinker with that mag too at the very least a spot weld or machine screws. Shyed a bit away from the hakim- the gas/lock system really terrifies me. I think the platform has a real weak link that was not evident when they were made, but as theyre aging- its the springs, namely that extractor spring. When it goes, the rifle starts blowing primers and experiencing all kinds of gas issues, and as said in the comments- blowing out the mag plates. $10 for a replacement extractor spring should be mandatory before these things are shot. I dunno if anyone makes whole spring sets for them #wolff. If you go through the trouble of taking the barrel off, which youll need to do to anything with it, Id set it back half an inch, and move the sight back as well, as im not totally sure how well counterboring it would play ball with the comp. Most 8mm is berdan primed anyway. The only thing you should not shoot is Turkish. If you observe the rules the gun won't close on you finger. So you always put the safety on, and only release it when you are ready to shoot as that will release the bolt. I.e. the bolt release is on the safety. If for instance, you pull the cover partially back it will stay because the tab to release it is on the safety. A Hakim is basically a Ljungmanin rechamberered in 8mm. A popular mod is with a MG38 magazine to increase the capacity, but no, it doesn't make it easier to change. Anyway, I bought 2 because this was back in the days of the gulf War where 7.62 x39, 308, and 5.56 was bought up by the government because of that war. Rare and expensive I bought 8mm for surplus K and M98. Yes, one of them is a Gew 98 from WW1 in great condition EXCEPT where the previous owner sanded down the stock instead of stripping it. That's okay Gew 98's haven't held value. Anyway after a time I had alot of 8mm, most Greek and Yugoslavian. So I decided to get a Hakim. Did the same with 7.62 x54R but that is another story. I had better luck as both were bought off gunbroker. The second one from some guy in New Jersey who had a bunch of them but with missing parts more specifically the top handguard and end piece that helps hold it on. Anyway, this is why I don't buy from RIA because I don't like wall hangers and there is always the chance. Anyway I was lucky on the Mausers too. The first was supposed to be a Yugo M48 or M48A, it turned out to be a rebuilt K98, a little over $100. The second a Russian capture, same thing rebuilt before storage. You use to be able to get new K98 stocks but no more. So it had the ground off buttstock with the missing sight hood and such. The Nazi proofs on both had not been damaged. Anyway, this one was at a pawn shop for $125, and they didn't know what it really was because Russian captures were always more than 125. When cleaning the bore of that one, after the bluing was removed with Hoppe's a pristine barrel was revealed. The Gew 98 was indeed in good shape except for the stock. Keep in mind, like Swedish Mauser and the Swiss pull rifles none of these used anything but corrosive ammo. I have heard people go to great lengths but even since I think they are obsessing. I would never use boiling water as it is water or dampness that activates the salts in the primers to corrode a barrel. I am rambling, basically the Gew 98 was late and has the "S" on the receiver, which is correctly in the white meaning it was rated for the 8mm, actually 7.92 Spitzer bullet with smokeless powder. The barrel was excellent and the barrel and action matched. As for 8mm, my last 8mm was an M76 Yugo in 8mm. Rebuilt by Ohio Ordinance I believe, it has a forged receiver.

Might be worth it to restock and rebarrel at the price of what these Egyptian Ljungmans are going for. Otherwise, a parts gun.

Yes, it dents and throughs the brass into the next Zip Code. Hakim thumb is the result of operator error caused by not knowing how the loading system operates. Ask me how I know. I am sorry to learned you were suckered into buying from RTI which stands for "Really Terrible Imports".

If you put the Hakim on SAFE, the bolt won’t drop at all until you manually release the bolt or place it on FIRE. You’re welcome.

I think that Hakim thumb is exaggerated because of the need to intentionally release the bolt on empty. There’s no bumping it. It’s an intentional action. Thank you for caring though.

RTI almost always sells absolute bottom of the barrel products for less than bottom of the barrel prices. Their customer service will also no refund you if they F up your order.

Buy the bayonet if you can find one...they have a gas adjustment built into them. They are hard to find though,but are better than pliers and fit perfectly
