I wish I would have done it in the early 80's when I was working in a place in Arlington Washington building Seiners and Gillnetters. Before that I worked at Kolstrand in Seattle's Ballard district in the warehouse and machine where we built all kinds of deck machinery and I had a chance to go crabbing but my wife said NO. Still wish I would have done it.

Hey! Love your videos and appreciate your stuff- just wondering, what seiners are used for when salmon season is over or if the captain (and the boat) are literally just making their money during the season and then just doing maintenance/other jobs outside of that time. Thanks again for your content, hope things are good for you through the pandemic!

Hey man, I’m liking this video, and I wanted to work on a seiner this summer, what’s something that I should know, also this summer might be my first time fishing on a boat
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
Gabriel Buxton congrats on diving in man! If there is one thing you ought to know before hopping on a seiner, it’s honestly that your job depends on how likeable you are to your captain and crew. More crew lose their jobs to interpersonal issues than injury. If you like your captain and crew, and if they like you, you will have the best summer of your life. If you don’t like your crew or your captain doesn’t like you after a few weeks, you’ll have a bad time and could lose your job. Also, there’s no way to apply online- you’ll need to walk the docks to find your captain. In short, go out there, be genuine, be ready and willing to learn, listen to your captain, be excited everyday you work, and bust your ass every opportunity you can. Do that and you’ll win more than just money this summer. Best of luck Gabriel, and happy fishing 🎣

solid attitude man! do you need prior experience? and how can you get hired. also I live in Iowa. thanks!
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's all about attitude out there, As far as experience goes, you don't need any to start. You'll get a larger crewshare if you do, but a lot of captains look for people without experience specifically because they are more teachable than guys with experience. If you look for a job as a greenhorn, you're as likely to find a job as you would if you had experience. Coming from Iowa will not help or hinder you if you look for a job in Alaska! It's worth a shot!

@@RTLivingFree Not completely true! There are many many Facebook groups that you can find jobs on. These have been especially key during this pandemic because you can't freely travel to Alaska and walk the docks, but they also are pretty busy normally. A few important ones are "Bristol Bay, AK: Jobs, Rumors & B.S." , "Southeast Alaska Purse Seiners" , "Alaska Commercial Fisherman Jobs", and "Bristol Bay Fishermen". I'd say these are best groups that I know of, the Rumors and B.S. group is especially good for finding jobs. Spend some time reading through the posts and familiarizing yourself with the way things are written and talked about, then you could make a "job seeking" profile post for yourself, and/or respond to boats looking for crew. Make sure to do your research before putting yourself out there, most of the guys in the groups have little patience for people who clearly haven't put in the time to know what they're looking for. While walking the docks is a great way to gain experience and is traditionally the "fisherman's way," it can cost you a lot of money and uncertainty while you search for a job. Lining one up before you go to Alaska can be a smart and more secure option. They offer different experiences and neither is better than other. Best of luck out there, and remember to never take the first offer because there will be more!

Hi I'm thinking of heading to Alaska. Could you please give me advice on what kinda boat I should go on that pays good and not extremely dangerous. Thanks
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
That’s an awesome question. I’d tell you to look for gillnetters and seiners. Pot fishing (like on deadliest catch) can get pretty hairy. Long lining is another one that can get dicey because you’re working with hooks every day. A mistake at the wrong time gets you impaled. Seiners and gillnetters are safer by far. You run the risk of getting caught in the net and drowning, or caught in the hydraulics, but those risks are more easily managed than with different kinds of fishing. I felt safe on my seiner. Lowest risk of all of them is the tenders. It’s a good place For anyone to start. You may even get to fish for a day or two of a boat allows you to go with them for a sample day.

If you follow my channel you’ll learn everything you need to know! Check out my playlist called The Greenhorn Guide! Something else to note is something I talk about in my video “Tour a Sein Boat with Philly Don” and my videos about Walking the Docks, but there is no online application for these jobs, you need to walk up to boats in the harbor and ask if anyone is hiring. It’s a bit of a gamble, but there’s often people looking for help توبیاص گرمیلر

What's an average paycheck look like for green horns?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
Onosai Leota solid question, it’s hard to say outright though. It depends on a lot of factors because you’re getting paid by a crewshare, not by the hour. And you get paid at the end of the season, not bi-weekly. As a Greenhorn you could be offered anywhere from 6-9% of the boat earnings on a boat like a sein boat. At 7% on a bad season for 3 months in Prince William Sound I made close to 11k the summer I recorded this. This past year I made 2% more and the season provided more fish for us, I made 20k in the same time. Both years I’ve been blessed to be on a boat where my captain knows how to catch fish. Regrettably for some crew, not every fisherman is good at fishing. As you can see, the business offers no guarantees, but if you’re resilient, ambitious, and lucky, you an do pretty well for yourself

Thanks for the information man!!!! Great pay!! Any numbers I can call right now for work asap? Or your number. I want to work and gain experience soon as possible please let me know.
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
Onosai Leota tragically no, that’s the thing about fishing. There’s no organizing body, no lost of emails, no applications, and no guarantees. There’s not many easy venues to getting the job. You really can only land this job by walking the docks in a place you want to fish, and if you seem like you can do the job right then someone will ask you. You really need to walk out on faith and hope that you get lucky.

Haha! You would be surprised my man, I worked alongside one guy who was 67years old. He made the best fried grits and even better sourdough pancakes. If you're ale bodied then you can make it work. Even if you're not able bodied you can do it, it's just gonna hurt lol I worked with another guy who was 40ish but had metal plates in his back and he just had to deal with it. He didn't like it but he got the job done. If you want a job, and you look like you can work hard, someone will take you!
