Loved this. Now I know where to go when I need to get off the grid. You ever been to Montana? It's pretty nice up there too.

Never Montana! It sounds beautiful though, I’d love to spend some time in the wilderness out there. What do you like about Montana?

I was only in Montana for a weekend . . . went for a wedding. I was in either Bozeman or Butte. Coming from the great big city, the main thing I liked was how clean and crisp the air was. I like that the population was sparse. When I was at my friend's house, I couldn't see another house for at least a half a mile. Loved seeing fisherman standing in the water as we drove by on the road. It's a gorgeous place.

I really enjoyed this video Ryan- as a recreational fisher, it was interesting for me to hear how the commercial fishermen make it happen. I never knew you became an independent contractor when you head out for the season. Stay safe, enjoy your travels & keep the videos coming! Coreen---aka Ms. O

Thanks 🙏 glad you’re enjoying the videos! Yeah, being an independent contractor on a fishing vessel has a few interesting implications legally, but fishermen do well when tax time comes around, and it affords more personal freedom in the jobs you take on and how long you keep them. It’s a pretty cool way of making money

Philly Dom is helping me out getting a job in Alaska this summer? Any tips? I could use em.
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
If you're trying for this summer you may be a bit behind to be honest. If you can't get a job this summer try again for next summer. Have your apps for the canneries in by April, that should set you up well pretty much anywhere you want to be. You trying to work in a cannery or you trying to fish?

@@RTLivingFree I really want to fish and be a Greenhorn. I'll probably end up going there next year. Hopefully the corona virus won't affect the business anymore by that time. I appreciate the tips bro!

no more herring in naknek today?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
Not today, Herring gets processed in Naknek in the spring time, they do mostly salmon in the summer. They might do herring again in the fall, it’s a year round fishery but Alaska goes almost full salmon mode every summer

How bad is a bad season? Can you give some numbers?=) Im planning on going gillnetting this summmer. Ill be out of college in late June And my fall quater starts in late september. How much does a greeenhorn make on avrage? Thank you
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 4 жыл бұрын
It's really hard to say honestly. A bad season for one boat might pay as much as a good season on another. It depends on how good of a fisherman your captain is. A bad season on a bad boat, you could break even and not make any money, but on a boat with a good captain, you may squeeze $12k out for the season. It also depends on where you're fishing and what kind of fishing you are doing to. Gillnetting is pretty ow cost of fuel and food, so you won't burn as much cash gillnetting than seining in your day-to-day operations. BUT your time in town on the days you cant fish will cost money too. Honestly though, I'd still go for it. Are you walking the docks for a job or do you have someone lined up to work for already?
