I worked at Ocean Beauty Naknek (96-2012) be prepared for an awkward wait for the season to start, lasts about 2 1/2 weeks for peak and goes on for 2 months roughly, you can transfer expense free to other plants to work longer. Don't trust what they tell you to expect and if you're going to a processing plant try to be in Quality Control (cleaner, drier, more hours/$, flexibility)

@@Buprestidae2017 Such truth man, After my work in Naknek for the herring season I moved over to Cordova to pursue a job on a fishing boat because the Copper River is the first salmon run of the year. It was still an awkward wait, I wasn't prepared to stay in Naknek and wait for salmon to come to Bristol Bay Definitely good advise to transfer to work at another cannery, getting the flight covered by the company is a huge benefit to help cover expenses and keep making money

The bars sometimes don't have an open sign out. Ahhh! They were all closed. Sorry about that. Red Dog and The Pitt are the two other bars in Naknek and then there is more in King Salmon (the place where you landed via airplane- namely Eddies and Sockeye Saloon). Hadfields is a little more local and the people know each other well. We also often have wedding receptions there. Fishermen's Bar used to be more of a dance bar, but I don't know about now? Red Dogs used to be known as the wildest bar, but now it is known for their food. I wouldn't be surprised if it was featured in Drive -ins and Dives. The food is mouthwateringly good. The Pitt used to be stationed in South Naknek, but now it is near Leader Creek in Naknek. They are the newest bar in town and one of the prettiest. Eddies is the oldest bar in King Salmon and definitely has a Cheers/old miners vibe to it... it is also one of the only places in town to get soft served ice creame. Sockeye Saloon has had some changes over the years, has a gas station and is right next to the King Salmon airport. King Salmon Lodge is a bit out of the way in King Salmon, but it is pretty nice and has a steak night every Thursday. Things to see if you have friends in town- Dog Sledding with Ann Shankle. She has these gorgeous dogs and also a massage parlour... or more like rolfing sessions? It is less massage and more about getting your spine and body in alignment. She works and lives in a cabin she built herself. If you like jogging, running along the beach (careful of the mud! You can seriously get stuck for hours and the tides suddenly change fast!) and climbing the bluffs are great- also watch out for grizzlies. Taking a steam- I'm so glad you showed one! Lots of locals have steam houses and we love a good steam- it's like a sauna but a little more old school. Hot water tubs are even better- you can see the night sky while soaking- but only if it is windy enough to keep off the blood sucking bugs. You can get free wifi in the parking lot outside the Martin Monsen Library, or if you go inside as well. They also often are trying to get rid of old books since they have limited space. Look for the cardboard box inside with discards- sometimes it is just romances, but more often than not there are some classics, and they are often in other languages as well. If you would rather buy internet, you can get a cell phone with limited service at the Bristol Bay Telephone office (King Salmon) or buy some wifi packs at Leader Creek Trading (right next to Silver Bay Cannery in Naknek). At the pool, they offer free ski rentals during the winter, and often have new things going on depending on the season. The pool is down the same road as the Naknek post office. You walk past NEA and the Clinic, and the large blue building is the pool. If you pass the pool there is an old basket ball court on the opposite side of the street. If you're into weights or taking a cardio or Zumba class, the gymn in King Salmon is open, but you have to call the number posted on the door to sign up and get the code to get in. There are plenty of churches as well if you are looking for that on Sunday morning, evenings and Wednesday or Thursday evenings. The Net is across from the Naknek post office and they are part of the Lutheran Church, they offer limited wifi, free cookies and coffee... and it is a great place to take a breather, chat with a local, find fellow crew members or just sit outside for awhile. If you are around all summer we are always looking for volunteers as ETTs or in the fire department. It is a great way to get to know the locals and to make a difference for the better. Plus, there are tons of people who work in the canaries who don't speak any English. If you happen to speak Japanese, Spanish or Tagalog (sometimes even German or Italian) it can make a world of a difference. I am into hiking, so I spend my free time getting lost on the trails. I have a dog, so I am not so worried about the bears. I walk fast, so the bugs also don't bother me much. I have friends that use their free time hunting or using the shooting range in King Salmon. One of them even prefers to hunt with bows and arrows. I also have friends that are more artsy and prefer to take a painting party with Jodi Doster, or taking a fur hat or fur mitten sewing class. There are scooter (sooo cute!) vehicle and ATV rentals with Eagle Eye. If you have a friend, beg to borrow their kayak, or take a cruise on a speed boat or canoe down Lake Camp. Alot of people go birding around here. I am not a birder myself, but if you check out the Visitor's Center next to the airport, they can get you started. And of course, there are tons of guiding and fishing options- both independent guides as well as those in lodges. I'm not really into drinking and more of a foodie. For cafes I cannot recommend Shearwater and Heart O' the Shire enough. Shearwater has a motorcycle parked out front near the road- just before you get to Leadercreek Trading (if you are traveling FROM King Salmon to Naknek). Beth Hill (the owner and creator) has a really wonderful and laid back vibe inside. It is very artsy- with old wooden spools for tables, murals painted on the walls, and tons of artwork by Beth and other local artists. They have furs, stuffed toys, clothing, and jewelry as well as other local crafts for sale. They make home made baked goods (the oreos are my brother's favourite) and they even have fresh fruit smoothies and iced matcha (my favourite). I won't go too much into Heart O' the Shire because I work there and my family runs it. We are only open from May until Halloween. We often have verrrry long lines and it is like a maze to get to the front sometimes (it worked miraculously well once COVID hit though). And here is the cut-out mystery revealed: My mum made a cut out of hobbits for our stand. But as a Fishtival event, she asked, pleaded and encouraged the other businesses to create their own cut outs as well. During Fishtival, there is an event where participants have to take photos in all the places listed for that time around (it depends each time). The first person to send all the photos in wins a prize- sometimes it is eating at Bear Trail Lodge (a GORGEOUS place to stay and eat if you get the chance) or a trip to Brooks. It is a way to make businesses known. I am hoping we can get one in South Naknek and Lake Camp as well- that would really expand the map. There are far more businesses though... but I am already taking up a ton of space. I personally love the lemon ginger tea at Salmon Grounds (not to be confused with the package delivery place called King Salmon Ground) as well as their lemon custard tarts. And the burgers and halibut fish and chips at The Galley is divine! A few recommendations to those who are looking to travel there: the wind is your friend! Dress in multiple layers. If it is not windy, it is buggy- like mosquitos, white socks and no-see-ums (called thus because they are so tiny- they even fit through the netting over the windows) blood-sucking buggy. You will see many people waving- we are indeed friendly, but if it is while we are walking, it is because the bugs are bad. It is wayyy more sunny than it feels so wear sunscreen and reapply frequently. Bears are a big thing here. They are mostly lazy and don't want to encounter humans, but there are exceptions especially if they are just separated from their mum and are more curious than hungry. NEVER seek out a bear cub- their mum is close by somewhere and they are the most aggressive if they feel their cub is in danger. Don't walk around with food- especially peanut butter and honey- bears love this smell! It's fine if you sit down and eat, and then wash your hands afterward. Don't run or scream- back up slowly if you see one until you can find a route away from their path. On the main road, you don't have to worry about all this usually. But if you walk along the beach or along trails, make a lot of noise. I blast my music, listen to Pimsleur audio recordings and repeat everything loudly, sing, clap, and even talk to my dog when I go out for jogs. The local radio stations are KAKN (a Christian radio network and part of the Lutheran church), another Christian radio station by King's Chapel, and another from Dillingham (KDLG). Both KAKN and KDLG offer info about local events, but I think KDLG is more faithful to announce the tides and the latest regulations of the Fish and Wildlife. Lastly, be sure to check out Brooks Camp before you go! Just search Brooks Camp or Valley of 10,000 smokes here on KZfaq and you will find tons of info- all those photos you see of grizzlies catching fish at the waterfall is taken there. It is about a 20 minute floatplane or 1 hour boatride away. And I totally agree with the thoughts of this video- the bar is a great place to make connections, but don't get stuck there, don't blow all your money there, and PLEASE don't get wasted. It can be dangerous walking while intoxicated at night- especially if the drivers are ALSO intoxicated (I'm including ATV drivers here). I have been on more call outs than I would like involving pedestrians and drivers getting into accidents- or searching for fishermen who fell overboard due to intoxication. It may look like a small river, but the tide is super fast. This is not the most flattering picture of my village, but I really love it here. Good luck and successful fishing!

Jiquez Byas great question, I’m gonna say that you should look into oil or guiding. They are very different jobs, but they are alternative seasonal gigs you can work in AK. You get a lot of money working on an oil tanker or drilling/fracking. But if that doesn’t agree with your morals or work style guiding is a great way to work a job you’ll love. The pay is enough to be worth your time, but you’d be hard-pressed to support a family on an entry level guide’s income Hope that helped!

Great question! I'd be cautious about bears, especially early in the salmon season. If you are at the cannery most of the time though you shouldn't have any problems you can't manage! If you go for a hike, bring bear spray. Don't buy bear spray until you are at the cannery though- it will get confiscated from you bag when you fly. Hiding it doesn't work lol they'll find it and take it.

Great video? Can u keep working year round with Trident?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 5 жыл бұрын
Great Question! With Trident, and most canneries, there are opportunities to extend your work-stay beyond the fishing season you worked at the cannery for. If you show your worthwhile working in the cannery, meaning: make all your shifts, work hard throughout all of them, and don't complain; then you may be able to stay on and do "post-season" work. There is a lot of work that needs to be done around the cannery by people who are generally handy. Facilities need maintenance, the land needs management, there is plenty that needs to be done. You could join them for post-season work which may hold you over until the next fishing season when the cannery starts taking fish again. You will most likely have access to the dorms and food in that case. I was offered a job doing post-season work and room and board was a part of that offer. Otherwise, there are office jobs and management jobs that you can apply for. You will need to be able to read and write and email well, beyond that experience in management is helpful. I cannot guarantee that room and board would be a part of the deal in management, but if you express interest in it during the interview or while you are working at the cannery you may be able to negotiate that to be a part of your contract. All of this being said, I am unsure if you can land a job in a single cannery to carry you through the entire year. Many are closed down for a large part of the year. It will depend on what fish your cannery takes. Trident, being as large of a company as they are, will always have a cannery operating somewhere. You would need to cannery-hop, but if you negotiate to have flights covered by the cannery you could definitely stay with Trident year round and have access to a dorm throughout your stay. You'll need to be proactive in planning and clear in explaining your travel needs and time availability. If you can do that, you can make it work.

Bristol Bay shrinks from about 12-15,000 down to just several hundred usually in just a week or two, Trident has a year round plant in Dutch Harbor. I've been there a in Dutch fishing and processing. BE CAREFUL, it might not be worth what the hardship & I've worked in the fisheries one time for 13 months straight. Luckily those things are pretty cheap When it comes to the bars i don't really know how vigilant they are with carding. If things don't work at the bar though I'm sure that someone at the cannery will buy something for you to take home. Which cannery are you working at?

I fished on 2 boats that season! One was a gillnetter, the Arctic Thunder. The other was a seiner, The Rafferty. I spent most of the season on The Rafferty, we had a good crew and a good captain, so it made sense to stick the season out with them. It was a grind the whole way this year by Copper River. I heard Kodiak and Bristol Bay did well though.

Do they Supply lockers for you to keep your gear and things in?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the question! At my cannery they did not supply lockers, but you’ll be living right next to the building you work in so all you’ll need is what you’re wearing. You’re encouraged not to leave things laying around either because it gets in the way. Your dorm will have plenty of space and you’ll have keys to your place! I didn’t experience or hear of theft being a problem in the dorms.

Why wouldn’t you stay in Naknek for Salmon season?
@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree Жыл бұрын
the wait was too long, and I didn't have the cash to stay in a hotel until the season hit there. I definitely thought about it though. Season hits earliest at the copper river, so that was where I could go and get on a boat the quickest. Less time living in the woods waiting for a bear to find me.

@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree Жыл бұрын
Depends on your provider and depends where you are. I'll guarantee you won't always have reception. Most places you won't have internet. If you're in town, you can get wifi from libraries and some eateries, but all in all, if you need to be connected to the internet - this might be an uncomfortable adjustment for you. If you didn't already know, most streaming services like Netflix let you download shows and movies for when you're offline. If its just for entertainment and not for social media, then that might work for you!

@RTLivingFree
@RTLivingFree Жыл бұрын
Off the top of my head, I can't tell you exactly - but taxes didnt hurt that much. Fishermen can use the "per diem" tax deduction - originally made for truckers - but the deduction allows workers who need to live away from home to deduct a fixed rate per day from their taxes per day they were working. Since your expenses are low as a fisherman, you end up coming out with a major deduction that helps a lot. Also, in the Copper River, we were out there for plenty longer than 45days - Bristol Bay has a shorter and harder hitting season, but I was out for all of summer, some of spring, and some of the fall. That does include some pre and post season work too though.
