I used to live on a ranch in the midwest and did quite a bit of work around the place on this and that, often stuff made of metal. Of course, often/usually, there wasn't any electricity around where I was working. After I got my .44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk, I discovered that it was a great asset in my maintenance chores. If I needed to drill a hole in metal, as I often did, I realized that I could quickly do the job with just a blast from my .44 mag "drill". Worked a charm. My wife was so pleased that she told me that anytime I wanted a new pistole, to just go ahead and get it. She reckoned that anything that would drill accurate holes in metal in just a tiny fraction of a second, and put a big smile on my face, was well worth the money. Great woman.

Got mine in 1970 for my 21st birthday. used it on the rice islands near Savannah Georgia and it saved my butt once. It put down a 200lb hog with one shot that was starting to chase me through the "suck mud" of the islands. brings back warm memories. It is a safe queen now as my arthritis is too bad for shooting it. hope to pass it on to my son or grandson one day. Thanks!

I am a small built guy and that trigger guard has never caused any issues, even with hot hand loads. It is a great handgun for close in Deer and Elk. I bought mine in 1975 and it still looks pretty good. One word of warning Pachmyer Grips will hurt you but Houge Grips are great. I also use a Uncle Mikes shoulder holster because a hip holster pulls my pants down. Ruger really build good guns I'm really happy the took over Marlin.

Ralph - My Single Six is the Bisley version. I really like it. One of the best Ruger .22 revolvers is the inexpensive Wrangler because it has a free spin pawl, just like the more expensive Magnum Research BFR does. I have seen conversion kits to add a free spin pawl to Blackhawks and Single Sixes, which would bring them up to the quality and ease of use of the Wrangler. I have noticed that the new Blackhawks turn the cylinder a little too far for ease of loading and unloading, because they lack the half cock loading notch. I guess I'm going to have to convert mine.

@@davidribroma2425 You can have any double action single action revolver IF they are on the approved handgun list. However if it's not on the list, you can't have it unless it is converted to just single action or is just single action in configuration. Because single action revolvers are exempt. So if I wanted a Chiappa Rhino, it would need to be converted to single action only. I could of course modify it back to stock but that would be illegal. California sucks.

Thanks for another fine video. Brings back some memories. The Ruger Super Blackhawk was the first 44 magnum I had the opportunity to shoot. Excellent firearm overall, the squared off trigger guard can certainly bite the knuckles. Perfects the flinch and furthers the reputation of the 44 Remington magnums recoil. I've moved on to the double action Ruger Super Redhawks in 44 magnum.
@arrlmember

I bought my Super Blackhawk in 1965 for $116, and I will not send it back to Ruger and have them put an automatic transmission in it. If you know how to safely handle a single action revolver, you do not need a baby sitter. I found the recoil was enough to make me realize that I needed to learn how to handload. Thank you Ruger. The frame is stronger than a N Frame Smith, but the loading manuals list a load that recoils like a .22 rimfire, so it is very versatile. I added a set of Herretts Shooting Star grips that filled in the area behind the trigger guard, but also made the grips longer to give you something to hold on to. Of course the grips are smooth. I fired a Smith once with checkered grips, and it BIT ME! I bought a couple of brass Super Blackhawk grip frames back in the '60's when they were selling for $16.50 each. I now have a couple of New Model Blackhawks and see that only a little gunsmithing would be required to fit them. Since the .357 and the .45 are milder rounds I think the standard grips should work fine. The square back brass trigger guards will look great when I get them on.

You are correct. When I bought my Hunter model Super Blackhawk, I had the option to get a Bisley grip or standard. I chose the standard just for something a little bit more different from a DA revolver grip. I wanted a 7 1/2 in Blackhawk, and I sought out the Hunter model to AVOID the squared trigger. For a .44 you want the rounded. If it was a .357 a squared guard wouldn't bother me.

I must say that I find all of your podcasts very informative and interesting (Thank you,.!). You brought back memories when you mentioned the price of the Ruger,... I bought my first used "Black Hawk" (with slick plastic grips,. lol), in the early 70's for $75.00, which at that time was very much hard earned cash. The other day I bought a barely used "Super Black Hawk" for around $725.00, however I had to install a new rear sight pivot pin in it to make it range ready. That "Super Black Hawk" is the second Ruger in .44 magnum that I have ever owned (however not the only 44 mags that I've owned),... I too have a large hand and it seems that no matter what I shoot in a large magnum caliber, (squared of trigger guard or not), I get that middle finger knuckle bit every time that I get down to serious shooting at the range. Carry on my friend, your doing a great job helping so many with your podcast,.!

It’s interesting to read Elmer Keith’s explanation of this gun. He wrote that Ruger sent him a prototype and he suggested 1. Grip and trigger guard changed to a colt dragoon shape, unfluted cylinder, protected rear sight etc. Ruger sent him a gun with his improvements and Keith said it was The Best 44 magnum ( better than s&w and Keith number 5). Note - the squared trigger guard was to avoid hitting your knuckle- Keith’s hands were smaller than Hickock45’s.

My 1972 version of the Super Blackhawk would print the Keith load easily within a 3" X 5" card posted at 100 yards. This was not a pleasant load to shoot all day long! It was, however, so accurate that I could hit a "Bobber" man sized target at 850 yards with regularity. My team mates could also hit that target, once I explained how much hold over was required and what reference point I was using. I also went through many different styles and types of grips, trying to find that compromise between comfort and control ability, settling on the Packmyr. That one filled in the area between the squared-off trigger guard and frame. Keep up the great work on your weapon reviews!

Bought mine same time new. Reload 2400, 220 gr. Speer. Still have it. Factory loads kick too much. Have bagged three deer with it generally under 50 yds. Love it. Super accurate.

I had one, wish I still had it. 10.5" stainless, had to change the grip, it was the most fun gun and could hit 48 oz cans at 100 yd. Can't recall the make of the grips but what a difference. Still waiting for you to show up have the coffee & cookies waiting.

I acquired a Super Blackhawk in 1976! It has stamped into the top of the barrel "MADE IN THE 200TH YEAR OF AMERICAN FREEDOM"! A reloading guru friend of mine developed a load that would shoot a consistent 1 1/2" sandbagged group at 50 yards! It is not a maximum load, but very, very accurate! Once took a coyote at over 200 yards! It will reach out! Two things I altered! It came with small serrations on the trigger which would make the tip of my trigger finger very sore after a couple dozen rounds because of the recoil. I replaced it with the regular Blackhawk smooth trigger. I also made custom grips for it that are 1/4" thicker overall than the factory grips. This not only makes the recoil less uncomfortable by spreading it over a wider area of the hand, it also helps maintain a constant, secure grip.

Rugers are built like a tank and I had total confidence in my Blachawk. My biggest complaint and the reason I sold it was the grip. I have big hands and for me the gun was the most uncomfortable revolver I've ever owned even though it was also the best. After selling it I bought a Smith Mod 29 and really liked how it fit my hand but it wasn't half the gun my Ruger was.

I bought a Flat Top 1956-2006 .44 mag anniversary edition. I did not like it at first, then I shot about 3 boxes of .44 mag and learned how to shot it. I love it now.

A friend of mine bought one a few years ago, with the 10" or maybe 10 1/2" barrel. It looks sharp, but a little longish for my taste. The one you're shooting, looks about right to me. Gorgeous grips on that gun.

10.5", and you really get a velocity advantage with the extra 3" of barrel. Also cuts recoil A LOT.

@@darrellhampton5057 I know. My personal preference though. I'm not recoil sensitive and prefer revolvers in the 6-7 inch range.

.44 Super Blackhawk was my first revolver, actually my first handgun of my own. Hickok, the square trigger guard hurts my knuckle as well. The problem went away completely when I added Pachmayr 'Presentation' grips. Even with my full-house reloads it doesn't bother me anymore. The Ruger Bisley grip frame also eliminates the problem, for me at least. Love my Rugers, they're absolutely bombproof.

I got a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 Mag in 1976. Stamped in the top of the barrel is "Made in the 200th Year of American Liberty" Used to shoot a box a week through it with a very accurate hand load! Never had that squared trigger guard rap my knuckles! My only complaint was the serrations on the trigger! After a dozen or so shots the tip on my trigger finger would get very sore. Fixed that by replacing with a Black Hawk trigger. I made an additional modification! I made oak grips that are 1/4 inch thicker than the factory grips! Makes a huge difference in recoil control. Hitting that gong at the back of the range would be no problem with mine!

I had one of those in the 70s with a 10.5 inch barrel, I put Herret shooting star grips on it that covered the back strap and filled my hand better. Much more comfortable to shoot. I used it for metallic silhouette and did well with it.

I found a Lipsey's Bisley frame edition Super Blackhawk 44Mag, which has a 3.75" inch barrel and is very comfortable to shoot, compared to the standard frame Super Blackhawk, the Bisley frame makes all the difference, but I've owned 4 of the standard models over the years, great videos sir, those Colt 45 grips are awesome 🇺🇸👍
