@@mateonelson3862 If they're an acquired taste, what would you have done, then? You think Close Your Eyes is a more accessible tune than that? Why not just throw Call Ticketron or Oh My Darling at them while you're at it, then. This song is about the same level of accessible as Blockbuster and Lie Cheat Steal, and it's certainly not an uncommon or unpopular introduction to the band.

You a metalhead too? I listen to hip-hop as well (granted not nearly as much), RTJ are really bordering the EDM trap sort of sound, with the synthy stuff and VGM influences, which I love (reminds me of my music), and I suppose you do too. Those beats are weird and go ham, like a lot of modern metal. Not super surprised that they aren't into it, considering they're slightly older school hip-hop/rap heads. Hell while I'm here I may as well drop a beat, (I never self-plug) but the clavs at the end of this track reminds me a lot of this one. soundcloud.com/dylmo/monster

@M C I was actually trying to ask Bryle yo, checking out those tracks now anyway. '97 Hov is dope as hell, that switch up at 2 minutes is dreamy and hard, love it. I'm more the type to listen to music than lyrics guy though, so as far as my "playlist" stuff goes, it ain't really my sort of thing, definitely to chill out to though. Same with Blakk Tape, I'm only half listening to the rapper and moreso his flow over the beat, I dig the sample and shit, sounds real nice, but I'd rather try to write some jazzy shit, record that and do it that way.
@KiraPlaysGuitar

@M C Oh nice, I'm a guitarist, on my way to being able to say some kind of jazz guitarist, but you know how it goes. And yeah, I know what you mean, but I still think it's making its way back, hearing a lot more disco/gospel/jazz/jazz fusion inspired stuff nowadays in pop/hip-hip/metal/EDM, depending on what you're listening to. But I hear ya' man.

Before I knew it, I was bobbing my head to the beat and laughing at the funny bars and being blown away by the slick wordplay. Then I peeped their other projects, and songs like "Close Your Eyes (And Count to F*ck)", "Nobody Speak", "Blockbuster (Part 1)", "Run the Jewels", "Panther Like a Panther", "2100", "Talk to Me", "Call Ticketron", "Oh My", etc. are some of my absolute favorite rap songs to listen to. Oof, this is painful to watch, after seeing Neddledrop, Rock Reacts, Shawn Cee, and Dead End Hip-hop like this, and their status as legends due to El-P’s work with Cannibal Ox and Killer Mike’s work with Outkast and his album RAP Music. Also, they’re signed to Nas’s label Mass Appeal, and I genuinely enjoyed RTJ2 and RTJ3 a lot. But it’s your opinion. Try Killer Mike’s Reagan because it was produced by El-P but from his RAP music album and it’s very real and I would say a really good political song.

@GasparLewis
@GasparLewis 5 жыл бұрын
Tricky. Very, very tricky. So tricky in fact I wrote way way WAY too much to try and set the scene here, but if you got a minute or five, read on. "Them having fun" is kinda the whole thing with RTJ. El-P produced one of Killer Mike's albums back in 2012 and they hit it off insanely; you know Killer Mike's bio pretty well, but El-P's big history is based on a long underground career in New York, working with really caustic and electronic-leaning sounds. Lots of synths and Blade Runner and lazer and feedback blasts, moody stuff. If you think his beats sound like video game menu music, he might just not be for you, because he's been streamlining over the years if anything. Still, his sound and his work is a major major major cornerstone for a sizable chunk of the city through the 90s and 00s. He's like the East Coast godfather of groove-unfriendly backpack. (Remember when people would call stuff that?) Whenever you see someone requesting Cannibal Ox, which I'd imagine is probably a bunch still, that's his beats and his label and verse or two from him. If you liked to get angsty and at a point in your life where you couldn't get with Juvenile or Manny Fresh, for whatever reason, that's the corner of the map you'd probably be running to. They were both vets by the time people were really taking notice of the first album they did together (Killer Mike's solo album R.A.P. Music) and they were just so cool with each other that they got their Odd Couple on for another... three albums last I counted. Even as a fan of both dudes, RTJ never really clicked with me that much, but at a certain point it's just them doing victory lap after victory lap that they were both long overdue, which is probably why people rep them so hard. (This point I'm still happy for them doing numbers but personally I kinda just want new solo albums from them!) If you give it another go, pick carefully. "Banana Clipper" (featuring Big Boi) or "Lie, Cheat, Steal" (RIP Eddie) from them proper. Or, as people are saying, go to songs like "Big Beast" (featuring Bun B and T.I. where people were geeking at just the thought of them on an El-P beat) or, if you want to get to that Substantial Lyrical Business, "Reagan" from that. (As you can imagine: Mike is NOT a fan.) The closest thing to a compromise in El-P's solo stuff might be "EMG" or something super-early like "Deep Space 9mm" to get an idea of where he's coming from. If anything, using your metal ears/mindset might've helped you get where they're coming from more than a rap frame of reference. If you can lock in on it, though, it is absolutely going as hard as people are losing their minds about.

Awesome essay, though I think I'd add one caveat: the first album is them just throwing shit at the wall and having fun. The second album is them taking themselves more seriously as a group and trying to establish a set identity. The third album is them going hard as a motherfucker and taking no prisoners while seriously putting down a hip-hop manifesto. Hey guys, as a heads up for Run The Jewels, I didn't like them either when my best friend introduced me to them. I feel that their music is something many people need to get used to before they start to appreciate it. A bit like when you first hear metal or other types of heavy rock? You get that "Wtf is this? How can people enjoy this?" feeling. 'Legend Has It' is probably one of their heaviest, dirtiest tracks, so to start with it is a trial by fire, so to speak (write, whatever). Interestingly, when Rock Reacts reviewed it, they loved it. I think RTJ's song structure and style borrows a lot from metal (no surprise given El-P's producer work), so those guys were more used to it. Also, their lyricism is quite different from a lot of rap out there; they don't rap over a beat, more than most others they rap with it, really focusing all the parts into an aggressive, punchy style. That being said, naturally not all music is for everybody, I'm glad that you guys are honest about your opinions, and not trying to please everyone, especially as this was such a massively requested group with a very passionate fan base. Keep up the good work! P.S. Their first song I really got into was 'Blockbuster Night Pt.1', it typifies their style, and has a clear message that was proven true with the MeToo movement last year.

@@ezwar99 @sonnguru, that's what I was referring to yeah. I mean, it is only the end of one verse, the end being: "Well pardon me, I guess I'm just insane as you explained / Or maybe sanctifying the sadistic is deranged", but knowing that El-P has been in the music business for a long time, makes me think that it's not just lazy commentary. Who knows, I could easily be misinterpreting things, but it's food for thought.

Could have had a better introduction to RTJ, but maybe they're just not into El-P's style? I definitely think he's an all time great, going all the way back to his old group Company Flow 15 years ago. Also, he produced the classic Cannibal Ox album. I don't know how familiar you guys were with Rawkus in the early 2000s, but that's where El comes from and has been dropping acclaimed stuff since. I would try "Blockbuster Night Part 1" for another RTJ try, if you don't like that I think you're just not going to like RTJ at all. Except for a song like "Early" which is different for them but is more emotionally resonant.

I'm a fan of RTJ but I've never really liked this song. If you're looking for more "street" songs I'd suggest DDFH or Angel Duster. Panther Like a Panther is also fun. I would say this song's sound is an okay representation of their overall sound, I could pick out EL-P's production from anywhere. However, the beat in this song crawls along which is unusual, the flow is not that great, and the lyrics are meh. Just to get this out there, EL-P is probably one of the most prolific and outstanding producers I've ever heard. He produced a number of albums on the Definitive Juxtaposition (Def Jux) label, including a few of his own albums. Probably the album I remember most fondly is the "Cannibal Ox - Cold Vein" album, absolutely legendary! The track "The F Word" is dope.
