Well, this is a quick video originally made for the reddit community, but I guess my viewers can find this interesting also... A Sony RX100 M5A was used to film this in 4K, but the results are not exactly great.

I put my Voodoo 3 in my MSI B350 Tomahawk and Ryzen 9 3900X system. The card failed in some way shortly after. Thick black vertical bars on the video output. :(

Sorry to hear that. :( I have a PCI Voodoo 3 3000 with passive cooling which is set as primary video card. Basically this card was always plugged in my main computer for the last 5 years, working 24/7. (not actually doing anything when I'm in Windows 10, but still gets very hot) Some Voodoo 3 cards were advertised with 10 years warranty. Maybe mine is one of those.

I have Win98 running on a Core2Duo E8400 with a G31 chipset. With Voodoo 2 SLI via PCIe to PCI adapter, 4x SATA in IDE mode, 1 GB DDR2 800 RAM, GeForce 7900 GT PCIe, Realtek Gigabit onboard Lan and SB128 PCI... Everything just works, also thanks to various driver modifications. But with all newer architectures there are simply too many problems with this old system. That's why I gave up running it on newer hardware, which doesn't make much technical sense anyway. Every Pentium 4 or Athlon XP or Athlon 64 is more than fast enough for the software of the time. There should be more people developing newer modern generic drivers for 98 like R. Loew once did. Then the old system could be kept alive for longer.

How is 7900 GT treating you in Windows 98?
@chrisrudi71629 ай бұрын
@@KaziQTR This can be done with adapted, modified drivers. You just have to be careful which version you get, otherwise you will have the problem that the PC always hangs when shutting down. But the card has very good performance. Cards up to 7950 GT should work, but with newer ones from the 8 series and 7950 GX2 you have no chance of getting them to work. I deliberately chose the 7900, which I bought cheaply from a neighbor down the street. The entire X800, X850 and Co are rarer and often very overpriced.

@O_mores2 күн бұрын
This is Windows 98 you don't need any special ISO - you can find detailed instructions on how install Windows 98 here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jqmRfbB9krOcYGw.html

How about making a video of how you got your ryzen to work, as I can't even come close to getting mine going. And what mother board are you using, that has 4 pci slots on it? I have none on my board, and I need at least one, just to use my sata card in.
@O_mores8 ай бұрын
Where do you get stuck? I made a video on how to dual boot, not specifically for Ryzen but it may help: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mpx9lNZ9udeUmXU.html I have a Biostar X470 GTA with 2 classic PCI slots, in addition I use a PCI-E to PCI adapter with a SATA card (not required for 98) and a PCI-E to USB card which uses an older chip automatically recognized by Windows 98.

@@O_mores Hi, i have my main Desktop PC a config whit m/b Asus PRO WS X570-ACE, i use a PCI-E Riser card that provide a 1 PCI-E 1X that split into 4 PCI-E 1 X thanks to Asmedia AS1184E chip and i have attached on it 1 CMI 8738 PCI Sound Card same model you have used and a Realtek RTL8169 based network card, both have Windows 98 drivers but when i install Windows 98 SE as you showed it are all unknown PCI and PCI-E card detected but i install the drivers for both cards and Windows 98 still show are the driver never installed. Wich drivers or way you have used for have all working as sound and internet connection? All theses cards also the riser PCI- E 1x multiplier are correctly detected and working in Windows 11. More when i try to enter in provvisory modality in W98 give me VCache error. PatchMem and cregfix + lmouse driver tricks are applied, for video whit my Nvidia RTX 2070 Super i used a UniVbe driver and i have the video resolution up 1920x1080 32 bit. The modify of System.ini was only applied for completing the setup of W98SE. P.S. The PCI cards are attached to PCI-E multiplier card whit PCI-E 1x to PCI adapters. Any solution? Thanks
@O_mores2 ай бұрын
@@TheSiry75 Well, with CMI8738 might be a conflict over resources. You should use another PCI-E slot from you motherboard just to test it, do you have all PCI-E 16X slots occupied? PCI-E variants with 8169 chips do not work in Windows 98 only PCI cards are working. PCI-E variants are using different chip revisions and drivers will work with those specific revisions only. If you try to modify Windows 98 .inf (Netrtlx.inf) and add hardware ids to match the PCI-E variants - still doesn't work. So far I don't know any PCI-Express card that is compatible with Windows 98, I will check some Broadcom PCI-E cards that I know for sure that are working with NT4 (1996) but I have to look if there are any Windows 98 drivers. In the end for networking you can try DOS drivers, check my latest video, the part where I install Windows 3.11 Realtek gigabit drivers, those should work with Windows 98 too: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rLmhrL2px9-sp6s.html

@@O_mores Thanks, all PCI-E 16 X slot are all occupied, actually. Some others little precisations: RTL 8169 Ethernet card i mentioned is Digitus DN-10110 PCI not PCI-E. I use also the GLOTRENDS Riser UEX103 PCI-E 1X to PCI-E 4X and is into the PCI-E 1X motherboard slot so i can use it seeing normally was covered by GPU and to this i attached the riser PCI-E 1X that exit out whit USB cable in the card ASM1184E based 4 PCI-E 1X i mentioned. So in theses four PCI-E 1X slot on card i have put a PCI-E 2.5Gbe Realtek network card and a PCI-E 1x ASM1061 based SATA3 2 ports card where is attached the SATA SSD 2.5" where i have installed W98SE, i was also activating the CSM mode in BIOS, the CPU is the Ryzen 3900X like yours. Others PCI-E 1X mentioned on multiplier card as mentioned are the CMI8738 PCI Sound Card and 8169 whit DonkeyPC adapters PCI-E 1X to PCI then 2 of theses adapters. In BIOS actually none of on-board devices like Audio or Ethernet (2) are disabled. I know that i make a "Frankenstein" 😂 config but... Win 11 Pro Insider accept all, all disks as HDD SATA, SSD SATA, SSD NVME and MSATA and U.2 connector on m/b selected as SATA too whit 2 cards identicals PCI-E 16X whit 3 slot 1 NVME M Key + 1 B+M Key + 1 MSATA and 2 M.2 built-in are in total 12 disks! To NVME slot in one of theses 16X card i put also the Intel AX210 NGM WI-FI 6E card whit A+E adapter. As i say unknown cards detecteds in W98SE but for PCI Sound Card and PCI RTL8169 still i have Yellow ? also if i installed correct drivers, for the ethernet the INF file u have mentioned. For the VCACHE error for provvisory modality in W98 not exist solution seems?

How to install it and also...could i able to game it on 60fps?
@O_mores4 ай бұрын
You'll find here all the information you need about installing Windows 98 on a modern system: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mpx9lNZ9udeUmXU.html . Gaming at 60fps, yes, of course... but depends on what GPU you have. For example I have a GeForce 7900 series PCI-E card 256MB/256bit one of the best that supports Windows 98.

How exactly you made win 98 recognize all the new hardware
@O_mores9 ай бұрын
Well, I use 4 PCI cards which are Windows 98 compatible.The most important is of course the video card: a Voodoo 3 PCI which is set as primary video card. Basically my computer is posting from the Voodoo 3 and then switches to nVidia RTX when I get into Windows 10. Also let's not forget that PCI-Express is perfectly compatible with Windows 98 as long as you have drivers.

This needs to be done in VMware or VirtualBox lol
@O_mores8 ай бұрын
Actually, for this exact Ryzen generation there are more problems in virtual machines than on real hardware. You need to install some patches for VM but on real hardware I was able to install Windows 98 without any modifications or patches. Of course, like for any Windows 9x installation I had to limit the amount of physical RAM in system.ini.
@zzco8 ай бұрын
AMD for a loooong while has had problems with V86 code. It still pretends it's using 32-bit addressing, which is incorrect, so crossing that boundary doesn't work very well. Anyway, thanks!

@@zzco This is the patch made mainly for VM. github.com/JHRobotics/patcher9x - In Case You Missed It :) Yes, I will switch back to Intel for my next all in one setup. I will buy a socket 1700 motherboard with 4 PCI slots/3 PCI-E. It looks like that are many motherboards with PCI slots from Asus, ASrock, DFI - you just need to add *industrial* in your search and play some extra 150-200$.
