He is definitely still alive and still performing at over 70. He sounds just as good if not better and always sings live. I started listening to him when I was 10 and at 60 am still loving him.

"The Real Thing" is the debut single by Australian singer Russell Morris, released in 1969. Written by Johnny Young and produced by Ian "Molly" Meldrum,[1] it was a huge hit in Australia and has become an Australian rock classic. It also achieved success in the United States, reaching the top of the charts in Chicago, Houston, and New York City.[2]

We didn't get colour tv til 1975 in Australia. I'm 55 & my mum bought her first colour tv in 1977. The late 60s to mid 80s produced some amazing Australian music. Aussies in the conservative 1950s grew up with what we call 'The cultural cringe." We felt our culture was worthless next to Britain & Europe. Then there was, especially under Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, a bold belief that we were capable of making our own unique culture. Then you get incredible Australian rock & great movies like Mad Max & Picnic at Hanging Rock. The history of Australian art has been a journey of finding our own voice.

To get into the American music scene back then, you had to pay for your management to go to the USA and promote the band, then you had to pay to get a tape played for the management of a big act that you might get a tour supporting. You could try it on your own, but without the finance, that is very difficult. The bands that made it, Goanna and others, they were the ones who were lucky and got that very rare break. Chisel tried and failed in the USA, so did the Divynals and Mental as Anything. The list goes on. I know that Wendy and the Rocketts manager went to the USA several times, trying to get her a support on a major tour. They ended up getting booked for the European leg of a Brian Adams tour, he threw them off the tour after they were called back for encores in Berlin. They sat around in London and ended up supporting ZZ Top. I should mention that Wendy was charting higher in Berlin than Brian Adams at the time.

We in Oz had to wait until 1973 or 1974 to get colour TV.....so some of our best early music performances are in B&W. You have to react to Russell Morris 'The Real Thing', psychedelic pop rock.....a beauty. It was produced by Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, who went on to be Australia's best known music 'guru' and host of the biggest music show in the country, Countdown. Russell is still going, his last album came out in 2019, a rock album but his previous three albums were blues. Very talented man.

At the beginning of December 2019, my wife and I had the pleasure of seeing him perform here in Melbourne. First half of the gig he played songs off his most recent album and his voice was great. The second half he sang all his great hits including this. When he began singing Sweet Sweet Love, I was overcome with emotion and nostalgia. His most well known track is The Real Thing which I seen you’ve reacted to the Kate Cerbrano et al cover. Russell’s version is worth listening to it has Hitler youth chanting and the sound of an atomic bomb explosion. Another suggestion if you have seen it already is Stevie Wright’s Evie parts 1,2&3. The longest track to go to number one in the world, it is over 11 minutes long.

We didn't get colour tv in Australia until about 1973. I LOVE Russell Morris. He's still singing and is still amazing. Sweet Sweet Love is on my list of all time favourite songs. Russell's voice is very different now and he sings Aussie blues, which he writes. I've seen him in concert many times and I still love him. Check it out. Oh, and another fab Aussie singer you should check out is Brian Cadd - check out Gingerman

@@johnd8892 There is a youtube clip of Aunty Jack switching to colour just before colour broadcasting was supposed to start. IT's worth rewatching.

@@rosmeeker1964 Yes. I remember watching that Aunty Jack ep on the University Student Union student lounge colour TV Live. Along with hordes of other students who could not afford colour TVs back then, along with our families for a few years.
