Russia captured Chernobyl on 24 Feb 2022 during their invasion of Ukraine. Nuclear power is in the headlines because of war. This video looks at how bad the nuclear risk is from Chernobyl during this conflict.
The protective covers that enclose the nuclear material is illustrated.

Thank you for this timely overview, Mike, including the point about the other Ukrainian nuclear power plants. I had been wondering how the Russian invasion had caused a radiation spike.

I think the force that took Chernobyl came cross-country and stirred up a lot of dust. That whole area of Ukraine and Belarus is contaminated, and it hasn't gone anywhere, just sunk a short ways into the ground.

I keep seeing that Chernobyl is on the shortest route from Russia to Kiev, but that's only true if you travel in a straight line. There are no usable roads north of Chernobyl, and the landscape is the famous Prip'yat Marshes. Fighting vehicles can go cross-country, but heavy logistics can't. The force that took the plant must have come down from the north, but its resupply has to be coming down a highway about 30 klicks west, then across to Chernobyl. Point is, it's not on the way to anywhere. They didn't just take it because it was in the way. They wanted it specifically, I think because of the field of transmission lines that link into the grid for Belarus, Ukraine, and parts of Russia. The nuke stuff is irrelevant. Putin has much simpler ways to spread radiation around if he wanted to.
@Mike-Bell
@Mike-Bell 2 жыл бұрын
Putin wanted Chernobyl for a headline. He also knows Ukrainians feel a deep attachment to Chernobyl. Its a deeply wound that they have in time become protective of. Chernobyl was a detour off the road between Belarus and Kiev. The military drive on roads if they can.
@hamletksquid2702
@hamletksquid2702 2 жыл бұрын
@@Mike-Bell - I'm curious about exactly where they crossed the border. I've seen vid of tracks crossng a river that has to be the Prip'yat, and there is an area of Belarus just northwest of Chernobyl that's been logged off in the last few years, leaving a grid of dirt roads that look like a perfect staging point. It's about 15-20 kms from Chernobyl. A reasonable drive for tracks. The main columns are probably coming down the Belarus P37, about 40 klicks west. I'm not seeing any useful maps yet, though. Just red triangles on the big map. Thanks for a video that shows facts without guessing or overdramatic horror scenarios.

The material is reportedly radioactive for 25,000 years. So to think its disturbance would not extend beyond a certain limited area is delusional. WE DON'T REALLY KNOW.
@Mike-Bell
@Mike-Bell 2 жыл бұрын
The most dangerous radiation degrades the fastest and it has had 35 years to do so. Much of the nuclear debris was ejected and buried after the 1986 explosion. And a lot of the other dangerous material melted down into the basement. Yes some of the radiation has a half life of 10,000 years but it is inside a wide exclusion zone.

Russia has a whole country of its own but is trying hard to break the country next door. Russia is unpredictable and unreliable. As it turns out they had to leave Chernobyl but not before trashing the radiation monitoring equipment and disconnecting the station from the power grid.

@hamletksquid2702
@hamletksquid2702 2 жыл бұрын
We all know about Putin's pretexts, but let me remind you that the US didn't put troops or nukes in Ukraine and had no plan to invite them into NATO anytime soon. All the help we've given Ukraine in the last eight years has been a response to Russian aggression. Putin has invaded a sovereign country because they might have presented a threat to him some day. That's not the way civilized diplomacy works.

You know, looking at this, I think Ukraine missed an great opportunity with this to probably gain a small advantage. What the Ukrainians should have done is let them take Chernobyl, but have remote triggered bombs set around not just the containment arch, but also the undamaged reactors in still in the plant. Then when a good enough portion of Russia's invasion forces get within range, blow up the plant, and release lethal waves of radiation on them, and killing a good number of them. Too bad, Ukraine didn't think of that. It would have probably turn the tide of Russia's attack, if only a little. And they could make it look like Russia had done it. I also know that plan would have also had other consequences too, but in war against a great and hostile threat, one needs any advantage they can get.
