the fact that the ssh68 performed so badly might have been caused by a problem with the heat treat or some other kind of heat damage, Mike B also encountered this with his first test of the 68

The 6b47 and 6b7-1m use "dry aramid fibre" on the inside, which means aramid without resin. This makes the helmet lighter, but it also makes it deform more when hit. This work against fragmentation, but as shown it presents issues when shot with higher kinetic energy projectiles like bullets. According to Russian testing, the ssh-68 is slightly superior to the ssh-60, maybe it only works against fragmentation. From what I have seen, the "K1" alloy used seems brittle. Thanks for the video

Yeah, the SSh-68 offers terrible protection from bullets, but the shape (wide and conical) imply it's better than other, more "spherical" steel pot helmets against shrapnel.

Don't. It's all about doctrine. Russian doctrine states that helmets are only required to prevent shrapnels wounds, not direct bullets hits ! It's a dual doctrine that stands since WW1 ! Yo want either a heavy but bullet proof helmet for some rare case of "one stray bullet" ends in your forehead or protect your whole army against massive shelling from enemy artillery ? Odds are inclining toward massive shelling to be more likely to happen. Of course, they got "special application" helmets that are bullet proof but what's the point giving them to your whole army for such low odds ?

@John Wayne yeah, the PLA overall is a paper tiger. US forces that have trained with PLA troops have also commented on their lack of training, which isn't surprising because the PLA focuses more on teaching troops to be loyal to the CCP than on actual tactics and survival skills.

@John Wayne Hm. I can only partially agree with the aircraft engine aspect. The Chinese have recently started producing aircraft with their own engines: the WS-10B and C along with the WS-20. However their engine tech is still behind the US’s level despite it being good enough for its current purpose. As for size, I definitely agree with you for now since it is obvious they wanna catch up in displacement tonnage for ships. For electronics, I’m not familiar with em, so I can’t judge. However, how are their naval personal crap? As of now, I haven’t heard much about them being incompetent. They haven’t caused any accidents that I heard of nor have their ships stalled in the middle of the ocean.

The General Director of the Center for High Strength Materials noted that, according to the experience of armed conflicts, soldiers are hit first and foremost by shrapnel. That is why the emphasis was placed on anti-shrapnel protection in the design of the helmet, and the bullet was seen as the equivalent of a heavy, high-speed shrapnel

The 6b47's best attribute is the weight. It's much lighter that western ballistic helmets (such as an ACH with NVG mount and rails). Out of the factory, it already has metal rails and an NVG mount attached. Ballistic protection is most important, but low weight is also important, especially if you patrol for extended periods without getting shot at.

You can get pads in the new russian helmets, I just bought some team Wendy pads and removed the suspension system and put the team Wendy pads in my 6b47. You still have the crappy chinstrap though. Iirc the suspension system was found on the pasgt to actually cause more injuries so its better to remove it.
@fallout1116
@fallout1116 3 жыл бұрын
The British, Italian, Dutch, and German militaries still use similar suspension systems. US M1 pot and PASGT helmets did as well, which is what I was issued back in the day. There's actually a significant airspace between the internal suspension (when worn) and the shell of the helmet itself, such that ~20mm of deformation wouldn't even reach the side of the head. The reviewer seems unaware of this. Not saying the newer "football helmet" pad systems aren't better, but that this old style isn't necessarily garbage.

@@fallout1116 the problem is you cant wear over ear protection with it or use the crappy russian gssh "head sock" variety. Also modern pads have a rating of their own to dampen the bfd. Also modern team Wendy cloudliner and other helmet have plastic cooling vents too

I've been told that the lesser protection of the modern ratnik helmets compared to its contemporaries has been to lower the weight of gear to the infantry man wearing it. Though it could have just been made to be cheaper as well.
@prfwrx2497
@prfwrx2497 3 жыл бұрын
Both. Helmet weight is unsuspended weight and really fucks with your neck more than it might seem. To me, it seems that the regular army only get frag helmets, while the strike teams kicking doors for a living will get the heavier law enforcement k pots that stop bullets. Heat retention is also a factor I think. I'd reckon the old suspension bucket dissipate heat better than foam pads.

Great video, its really cool to see an actual ballistics test on modern military helmets. 6B47 seems to be significantly inferior to the US Military issued ECH helmet which is capable of stopping most rounds up to 7.62x39 and even 7.62x54 from a PKM at 20ft (although this did happen under combat conditions not test conditions and I doubt you could expect it to consistently stop this caliber). Also it supposedly only weighs 3lbs which is quite impressive.
