После победы и захвата Крыма, смоленский князь Потёмкин решил построить русскую Тавриду, за что и получил прозвище Таврический. Там было основано несколько поселений православных греков и даже сербов, но львиная доля Новороссии была заселена русскими крестьянами из центральной России. Одно точно и неоспоримо. В это время все щирые украинцы жили на территории Австро-Венгрии или Речи Посполитой и они не имеют отношения ни к Мариуполю, ни к другим городам Новороссии.
