Join me for video 2 of this video bootcamp series. Continuing from were video 1 left off yesterday I'll share how to make and use rust water, my favourite way of achieving beautiful botanical prints on cellulose fabric (linen, cotton, ramie, viscose, tencel etc.) and give you of information about which vegetation to use for successful results, regardless of where you live.
I hope to cut through the clutter and demystify the 'dirty pot' eco printing process for you and share this wonderful way of working without using traditional powdered mordants!
Whether you are a total beginner or wanting to move towards a more sustainable textile practice, hopefully you will find this helpful and pick up plenty of information to help you achieve the results that you are looking for.

Just love this series!! I did notice you did not mention using coniferous plants like pine or juniper. Do these plants give results? Of course, I will try myself, but have you had results or are there special considerations? Thanks from Minnesota, USA.

Thanks Joseph, I'm glad that you are enjoying the series! I've had NO success at all with any coniferous plants. They can give results I believe when working with mordants although to be honest I can't think of any images where I have actually seen prints made using them. Casuarina on the other hand isn't actually a pine, it usually give super prints when soaked in rust water if you have access to it!

Hi from South Africa! For ironing after processing and washing, for SILK/WOOL still on very hot iron? Between parchment paper maybe? Thanks for the excellent bootcamp and how you have obviously spent a lot of time correlating your topics and info into specific orders.

I Just use the proper setting on my Iron for Silk.. use a pressing cloth as there is no need to think you are heat setting the cloth as it has been boiled in the pot for so long it is already set. Caroline Nixon advised this.

Hi Jacqueline, I'm slightly confused by your question because I assume that soap making dye is a commercial one and as such wouldn't be suitable for working in the dirty pot. Without mordanting fabric first most commercial natural dyes aren't substantive and won't last on your fabric, if indeed they give any colour at all. Shout if I didn't understand your question correctly!

Hello! Quick question... Have you tried using flowers for eco printing with the dirty pot? I have marigold, cosmos and hollyhocks in my garden and was wondering if they would work well since they are known to contain a lot of pigments.

We call sycamore ‘liquid ambar’ in Tasmania; some people also call it sweet gum 🌿😊

Rita - In the UK we have both Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) and Liquidamber (Liquidamber styraciflua), completely different trees. This is why using the Latin names avoids confusion!

As Morag has already commented they are actually two different trees! Liquidamber grows here in Ireland too but gives me no prints whatsoever in the 'dirty pot'.

Your video's are so informative & your pieces come out so beautiful! Could I use dried eucalyptus leaves & branches or do they need to be fresh?

Absolutely Jennifer, all you need to do is soak your eucalyptus vegetation in water until it is soft and flexible again, then use it! I like to dab the soaked leaves or bark on a towel so that they are not dripping water. If the leaves are too wet you will still get beautiful colour and prints, just not crisp outlines. The water that you soak the eucalyptus in akes wonderful liquid to top up your dirty pot with!

Hi Agnes, you can do both and get different results depending on which process you do first! It's fun to use indigo to over dye pieces that haven't got the best prints, use a rusty metal pipe for the best results in this case.

Hi Rochana, I do use soymilk at times but that is something I share with members of my Eco Print and Wet Felt Club. I don't have it available here on KZfaq at the moment.

Thanks Morag. I do sometimes use soy as a modifier but it's not something I discuss outside of the Eco Print and wet Felt Club. As you say, everything that I share here on KZfaq is created using the dirty pot and/or home made rust water without traditional powdered mordants.

when starting from scratch how long it takes until the dirty pot will work good? how to start it? only a few metal things into it? and do you put your bundles into something like a basket or do they lay on the hot floor of the pot - i am afraid that they burn over gas heat which makes the floor very hot!?

It helps to make the dirty pot up at least an hour before the first session but the longer it is made the stronger the results will be. Here’s a link for you showing how to start your pot. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o7hjo8Vn3tLOoIU.html Please do NOT worry about your bundles burning. So long as you have plenty of liquid covering them they will be fine. Just don’t cram so many into the pot that they can’t move freely. You can also rotate the bundles when you don’t have much space but not cramming the pots is the best idea.

When you mention using only 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda to neutralize the reaction of a copper pipe, would that be to perhaps a gallon of water?

Hi Cecile, you only need to use the baking soda if your fabric is in direct contact with an iron pipe, not copper. When you do use it the quantity of water doesn't matter, use enough so that there is plenty for the fabric to swirl around in.

Hi Catherine, yes, using a pressure cooker would shorten the process but I’m afraid that I can’t tell you by how much. If you were to cook a stew for 3 hours in a conventional pot how many hours would you cook the same food in a pressure cooker? One? If this was the case I’d say you could shorten the time by two thirds so just use your head and experiment.

??? For the blackberry leaves in your photo, how differently will the yellowish, spotted leaf print versus the totally green leaf And do spotted/damaged/bug eaten leaves print in an interesting manner???

Hi Cecile, depending on the time of year and current growing conditions leaves can print differently, they don't always though! Often leaves that are spotted (black spot for example on Acer pseudoplatanus) give no prints at all where the black spots are, that is fun and also, damaged leaves often give very interesting graduations of colour. I always look out for these when I am gathering leaves to print with!

Yes but you will fit far less pieces in the pot if you do this. Strange but true!

??? Have you tried dipping cellulose fabric into a mixture of soy milk and water? I read it helps the fibers accept color better. What I read said you could dip and let dry to use later.???

I only neutralise the fabric when it is in direct contact with iron or rusty metal Cecile, not copper. The quantity of water doesn't matter, it's the quantity of bicarbonate of soda or baking soda in relation to the amount of fabric that is important. A silk scarf for example needs only a quarter of a teaspoon but a heavy wool blanket could take a few teaspoons. Use your head and don't use too much!

It’s totally colourfast with the process and vegetation used. The reactive pot, rust water and option chunk of metal in the pot mimic traditional,powdered mordants to a degree
