1968 Ford 5000 restoration - Step by step process of repairing a rust hole in a 15" x 30" 8 clamp tractor rim. New rims were rather expensive, so I opted to save originals. 18.4" x 30" tractor tire.

I do a lot of this rim and wheel replacement and repair. I save old 24-26 and 28" rims and use them for parts. You can cut out a puzzle piece that matches exactly what you have removed and wield it in and make it look like it never happened. Then relocate the valve anywhere you want. Usually it's the in the 90゚ bend area. Which I heat up cherry red. Then flatten it out with an air hammer and drill the hole.

That's some good advice. Wish I had some old rims when I did this, would have saved alot of time!

Nice, I have a welder, a press and I am going to use your method to bend the radius on some sheet metal. I have a ford 9n with rust holes in the wheels. I may or my not repair them. I need to pull them off first and see exactly how bad they are. I even have some 12 gauge steel and if they are worth saving I will repair them. Thanks for sharing.

mark - always like great workmanship, and the effort to repair instead of replace. I have not had to replace a tractor rim on either of my compacts, so i have no idea what a rim cost. Looks like the condition of the rest of this rim was "o.k.", which probably may have made it worth the work. With that, would it be easier in shop cost just to try to buy a used, good condition rim?
@marktolman6037
@marktolman6037 11 ай бұрын
Thank you! If I was faced with solving this problem for a customer, it would be much more cost-effective to buy a used or even new rim. If you figure labor rates and material to repair old rims, it would greatly exceed costs of replacing. The repair shown in the video would easily take 6 hrs. per rim. Doing this for myself, I can afford to give up the time needed.

@@marktolman6037 yeah- I agree, but, ever time we have an opp to do a repair , we learn. I do the same thing on repairs when I know I could get parts. That’s how I justify to the mrs. Why I have to have an outbuilding full of welders, presses, and other un-named told, heh-heh-heh

what eludes me is why one would use calcium chloride. it only weighs 1 pound per gallon(imperial) more than water and antifreeze doesn't corrode the metal. it's cheap i would guess..
@marktolman6037
@marktolman6037 3 жыл бұрын
Cheap, and plentiful. Supposedly you can acquire calcium powder, and mix it with water. Probably easily accessible to most farmers.
@billgator2005

and readily available on the farm. drives me crazy. my vintage garden tractor had ballisted wheels and it ruined the rear rims. i am unable to purchase replacements. all for cheap work arounds that became standard practice
@marktolman6037
@marktolman6037 3 жыл бұрын
The farmers mindset, was to get the use from the tractor practically and cheaply today. 30 years to rust through a rim wasnt thought about in the moment.
@FastEddy5
@FastEddy5 Жыл бұрын
You don't want to use antifreeze it's not good if you are planting and it leeks. They use beet juice now, it's organic and will not freeze down to -35. Old tractors used to be prefilled with calcium chloride when new apon customers request. It's just what they used back in the day. By the way, water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon. When you add the appropriate amount of calcium chloride it becomes 11.86 pounds per gallon. That's roughly 30 percent additional weight. Which is substantial @ 90 gallons. The good thing about beet juice is the weight is equivalent to calcium without the corrosion. So your assumption of only 1 pound per gallon is quite far off. 🤔
