I installed the Racing Beat Aluminum Lightweight Flywheel awhile back and have put together a video on my thoughts on it. It gives you better acceleration, but I think it took away my top end. Is it really worth buying one for your mazda rx8?

Hey Everyone, when I filmed this video almost 3 years ago, I had no idea what I was talking about. Please disregard what I thought was going on. A lighter flywheel with less rotational inertia WILL in fact accelerate faster. Some other variables made my rx8 slower during testing I can only assume. After driving other rx8s without a lightweight flywheel, I can assure you that there is a slight difference in how quickly the car revs, although acceleration doesn't seem too noticeably faster.

This is the difference between a man a boy, right here. A man can admit when he's wrong and take the feedback of other men, and a boy, cannot.

I would say you were correct the first time. "The light flywheels decrease the inertia, so it gives a quick response to acceleration and deceleration. For this reason, light flywheels are used in the sports car. When the clutch disengaged, there is a greater drop of RPM because there is no heavy flywheel to keep the momentum going on. It is not good in normal condition because light flywheels increase the tendency of the engine to die during the gear shifts." www.mecholic.com/2016/12/light-flywheel-vs-heavy-flywheel-effects.html

Good job on you for learning. You’re very punchable in this video.

I think you should perhaps not do technical explanations unless you actually know what you're explaining, the inertia argument is completely backwards, you're still accelerating the engine either way, and you have more inertia to overcome with the heavier flywheel, not less. Something else affected your test.
@JapandaTuning

Its more involved than just inertia, which is just the simplified way of explaining it. It actually has to do with energy (rotational energy (k=1/2(inertia)(velocity), but I will refer to it as linear kinetic to simplify it). As we know from our physics class, kinetic energy(linear) = 1/2(m)(v^2) where m is mass, and v is velocity. The oem flywheel has a greater mass than the lightweight flywheel, so when they have the same velocity, the kinetic energy will be greater. You can also think of it like "momentum". If you have a smart car rolling at, say 20 m/s, it will take a lot less force to speed up to 30 m/s than an F450 accelerating from 20 m/s to 30 m/s. And newton's law F=ma, larger mass will take larger force to achieve same acceleration. I will remember next time that people want more technical explanations which are more complex. So back to the flywheel: - OEM will be faster if you are accelerating from constant velocity in higher gears. - Lightweight will be faster in accelerating from rest. Hopefully this makes sense
@Rippthrough
@Rippthrough 6 жыл бұрын
No, it makes no sense, because you still have to put energy in to accelerate the heavier flywheel, it's not a steady state, it's accelerating. That extra kinetic energy is stored inside the flywheel, it's not available to accelerate the car with, the energy for that has come from the vehicles engine, so it had less available to accelerate the car. Either way, accelerating the car from a steady state/rpm, the lighter flywheel will accelerate faster. The ONLY time a heavier flywheel will help you accelerate faster, is if you have a vehicle that can't exceed the tyre traction in first gear, and you're setting off from a standstill. In which case you can rev the engine to store energy, and then drop the clutch to use it. The minute the clutch is fully engaged however, the car will accelerate slower from the heavier flywheel. TL:DR - Lighter flywheel faster everywhere, apart from some odd situations accelerating from rest. - I.E. Opposite of what you're saying.

I would agree with Rippthrough. Although Japanda's equations are correct, the way you're using them isn't. You have to take into consideration the change in energy between the two rpm's(4000 and 8000). For example: (I know these are not actual Newtons, but i'm too lazy to do conversions.) at 4000 rpm's: OEM Flywheel: 1/2(16.8)(4000)^2 = 134,400,000 N Lightweight Flywheel: 1/2(11.4)(4000)^2 = 91,200,000 N at 8000 rpm's: OEM Flywheel: 1/2(16.8)(8000)^2 = 537600000 N Lightweight Flywheel: 1/2(11.4)(8000)^2 = 364800000 N So for the OEM flywheel there is a difference of 403,200,000 N between the RPMs. For the lightweight flywheel there is a difference of 273,600,000. Meaning 41% more energy to accelerate the oem flywheel than the lightweight. There has to be a different reason for why your test said otherwise. Also, there shouldn't be much of a difference in acceleration with a change in flywheel. Don't think of your upgrade as an increase in performance. Think of it as an upgrade in your transmission. You are now able to shift faster, because your RPM's will increase/decrease faster. TL:DR -Lightweight flywheel uses less energy -Lightweight flywheel does not make car faster -Lightweight flywheel helps shift faster

What I am saying is that the energy is stored in the flywheel and can be converted into kinetic energy to aid in accelerating in higher gears so the engine doesn't have to work as hard later on in the acceleration because the energy is stored in the flywheel. (also your units should be Joules). I am open to talk on this, because I am still learning.
@Rippthrough
@Rippthrough 6 жыл бұрын
No, you can't use the stored kinetic energy, because to do so you would have to slow the flywheel down whilst the engine is accelerating. Obviously, that does not happen, what does happen is you store more and more kinetic energy in the flywheel because it's speed is increasing with the engine. The engine is supplying that energy, so that's less energy going to to wheels to accelerate the car.

Weight on OEM has weight on outer edge while added balance weight is on the inner side of the rotation, making less inertia even if they had equal weight.

The lightweight flywheel is slightly faster, just not much faster and other elements may have influenced your times along with your measurements and the repeat-ability of those measurements.

the camera angles are notably different in each test which can skew the results considerably. most notably what appears to be 8k when viewed from the right is actually several hundred rpm higher when viewed from a less angled prospective. This is why your videos indicate the car is slower. If you did this the smart way (at the track) this whole mistake could have been avoided. The only time a flywheels inertia is of practical use is when you first release the clutch when your stopped, or clutch kicking in drifting where you need an instantaneous boost in torque to break traction. In both of those situations the flywheel decelerates while increasing the speed of the input shaft (the energy is being transferred which is why the flywheel decelerates). The power loss from accelerating a heavier flywheel is not just theoretical, its been proven both by physicists and by real car tuners testing both on a dyno and on the track. Heavier flywheels take more power to accelerate at the same rate.

Is there a difference between a fly wheel and a pressure plate 🙈
@JapandaTuning
@JapandaTuning 7 жыл бұрын
The pressure plate pushes the clutch disk onto the flywheel. The flywheel is connected to the engine output shaft. The pressure plate connects to the flywheel, but its an entirely different piece. Watch my full clutch and flywheel install on my channel to get a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Thanks for posting. I am glad I saw this. No way I will change the flywheel when I change the clutch. The RX8 is not a fast accelerating car from a standstill. It is most fun to drive from 3rd gear to 5th gear.

lightweight flywheel is a nice start but you need lightweight rotors pullies and driveshaft as well as lighter forged wheels to really feel the difference all of them together helps a ton. you will also at the minimum need a street port and of course a lovely tune but thats a lot of money anyway. the RX8 is slow and a terrible build platform unless you have the money and know how to rip the motor apart and build it properly. there are some really creative fixes to this motor to improve efficiency. but at the end of the day just go spend 30k and get yourself a nice 20b b-c-or d code engines and build off that platform. i saw the lovely porsche in the driveway im sure a home with a little cash and automobile enthusiasm would be more than happy to aid in a wonderful rotary build.
