I picked mine up a year ago, I love it. Its easy to use and the truck bed is very useful, the ride quality is nice, my yard is all hill and i only use 20% to mow my whole yard

I have had the Ryobi 54" zero turn for going on the 3rd year. It came with GSM lead acid batteries and I just did the switch to LiFe as I thought the lead acid's were failing. I have since found that using a charger with a repair function (I found on eBay), I was able to restore the GSM Lead Acid battery's. That aside, I love my mower. Rinse it off, sharpen the blades and check the tires. I mow 2-1/2 acers with some rather steep hills, blades always on high, and could finish with with 20% left, with the origional batteries. I can now get (almost) 3 mows with the new batteries. I'll run this mower until the wheels fall off.. the deck is bullet-proof, the frame is ridged and it is comfortable to use. I am now looking at this tractor for my wife, as her old Craftsman is on life support and I like what I see. Thanks for the review, it was helpful.

I boight this 42" tractor and absolutely love it. Unfortunately I mowed too low and hit a hidden stump bending a blade completely downward. My local HD didnt have the replacement blades so I had to order them online. It was around $70 in a pack of 4 which replaces all the blades. Other than having to order more blades than currently needed and the wait time, replacing the blades was so easy with the removable deck. I did it all by myself. Now I flagged the stump to avoid another blade mishap. Other than that this mower is awesome 👌

Thank you for the review. Was very informative. I am impressed that atech came to house . I purchased a cubcadet in spring of 2022 . At the end of summer 2023 had issues, Cub cadet support is horrible! I h a e to bring it to one of their service providers with is over 50 miles away. Very disappointing. If they void this out I may consider ryobi .Thank you again.

Glad it was helpful! Yes, I very much like that they came to the house to fix as that is very convenient. With most traditional riding mowers you have to either load it on a utility trailer and haul it or pay someone to transport to and from service.

Thanks for taking the time to review. I guess the disappointing thing is the fact that people would select this model for hills. Flat yards surely you would go with a zero turn. I am so on the fence.... there are some cool robots coming out now for similar, even less money. Great information regardless - thanks mate.

Thanks for the tip on hills. I hope they beef up the charge controller. How is the deck removed for cleaning and blade sharpening? How does one adjust the lid? Our yard is mostly hills at a steeper angle than yours. How is hill traction on damp grass? How well does the mower cut on damp grass?

Great questions. I have not removed the deck as yet. I plan to remove that in the spring to sharpen blades and clean and will do a video on it. Yes, the drive motor controller needs to be more robust...it would appear its overheating and failing when mowing steep grade at a low state of charge. When you say lid, are you talking about the discharge chute? Hill traction is good but on damp grass it will slip...I don't recommend cutting when grass is damp. It does a great job of cutting and the highest blade speed can be used for tougher cuts. Since you say you have hills steeper than mine, if you have a larger (over one acre) property I don't recommend it as you will need to recharge it several times and may have reliability problems with the drive controller overheating. I recently used it to pull my 48" plug aerator implement and it can't handle the hills without overheating...but my Deere struggled pulling that up hills. It was fine when I used it downhill or on a level surface. Unit is rated to tow up to 500 lbs but I wouldn't attempt that on anything except a level surface unless Ryobi is able to upgrade the drive controller to prevent overheating. I have had no issues at all with the blade motor controllers.

@@ElectrifiedOutdoors Thanks. We have about 1.5 acres to mow. It takes me about 2 hrs on my Cub Cadet XT1. We live in the PacNW so damp grass can be hard to avoid. Grass starts growing quickly in late winter here. I really want to go electric for the mower, but I need one that is as tough as the Cub. Every time I look the price of these mowers goes up a thousand and yet reliability is not guaranteed.

Well home Depot does have a 30 day return policy if your not satisfied with the product simply return it. It's a nice unit otherwise. Don't let the battery run down below 20%. I have about 1.2 acres here. I can cut it all on low blade speed but the quality isn't up to my standards. I cut on medium. I do the large hills first while it has the most charge. I take a break let it charge and do trimming. It does charge pretty quickly.

Great video. Question in min 22:35 , you have the lawn stripper installed at the back of the tractor to flatten the grass. Where can I buy that ?

Thank you. That's the big league lawn striper check mate. Its up too high now though so I have to get a different hitch that drops it down a little bit. Sometimes when I backup it gets stuck because its mounted too high.

Also, how hard is it to access the hitch in the rear? It appears like it's stuck a foot or so under that rear compartment. If you are attaching a trailer regularly, how annoying do you think it would be to do so?

There is no hitch in the rear just a receiver. Its way up underneath and they don't sell a hitch ...you have to buy an aftermarket. I really don't like the hitch situation and the mower seems to struggle when towing heavier things despite the rating of 500 lbs towing. I will probably do an update on this video at the end of the season.

i am in process of buying my first mower ever.. i am confused should i get a Ryobi Zero Turn or a Tractor ? i will be using this for my home backyard preety flat surface. Any suggestions please

If you have a flat yard and you don't do a lot of telling a zero turn is the way to go. I went with a tractor because I have several implements and some hills.

I'm sure it could be unplugged. Some have put tape over it. Lower the volume. I have not had the opportunity to search for its location.

No you can't turn it off but... There are some hacks. You can mute it quite a bit by putting tape over it or silence it completely by disconnecting it. I believe it's in the front somewhere. I haven't gotten around to figuring this one out. The backup beep is pretty annoying though.

I just read on Ryobi's site that the mower only ships with one battery pack. Is this what you are running with or did you get two more packs? How much are the extra packs?

Mine is the 46 inch model. It came with the rapid charger and three 10 amp hour battery packs. Last I checked extra battery packs were $300-$400. It can only take three though and mine came with three of them.

I purchased right from HomeDepot website and it was delivered. I didn't get any extra warranty. Ryobi has a 5 year warranty on the mower.

Yes, unfortunately the steering wheel is very stiff. It's not so bad when you're moving but when you're going it really slow speed. You have to be careful. Don't want to cut the wheel all the way. It can be very hard to straighten it back out. I have gotten used to it but if you're cutting it very low speeds, just be careful. If you cut the wheel all the way and you can't get it straightened out quickly let off of the accelerator.

let me get this straight. If you have a hilly yard then you want to mow the hills first while the battery is at a high state of charge because you want to mow the hills when the battery is at a high state of charge. This is because it's better to mow the hills when the battery isn't at a low state of charge, because it is better to mow the hills when the battery is at a high state of charge, so if I have a hilly yard it's better to think about mowing the hils when the battery is at a high state of charge. Did I get that right.

Have you done any math to see what this costs for an average summer month on your electric bill for this vs the cost of gas for a similar tier gas tractor? I am considering a Ryobi tractor but I am worried about, perhaps unwarranted, the electric bill being more pricey than gas.

This is an excellent question!! Thank you for asking this! The short answer is no I haven't but I have done some back of the napkin math. Each of the three batteries is rated for 10 amp hours. So...30 amp hours total. 30 * 120 = 3,600/1000 = 3.6 kwh which is something we can match up to our electric bill. To Fully charge the battery from 0-100% takes 3.6 kwh. Let's just say 3 kwh because I don't run it below 20% (the blades will shut off once you get below 15% or so. Now I also recharge once after I cut the front sections I usually have 60-70% battery still left but I am going to say 1.5 kwh there. So 4.5 kwh to cut my just over 1 acre property. My Deere took 2.5 gallons of gas to cut the same area. At the average electricity cost of $0.17 per kwh it costs me about $0.77 to cut my lawn each time vs about $8.75 each time with my 25 HP Deere. I do trimming and cut certain push mower areas while I wait for recharge so the time is not wasted. So assuming I cut once per week for 26 weeks out of the year here is the quick math. Gas Deere cost me $227.50 in gas (does not include oil or any other maintenance) per season. The Ryobi costs me $20.02 and has none of the maintenance a gas mower would have. The only thing I do with the Ryobi is grease fittings/axles, clean the deck, sharpen the blades, etc. The Ryobi does struggle on the hills though so if you have a really hilly property you may want to avoid. It has plenty of power but the drive controller has an overheating problem. I cut the hard hills first when it has a high state of charge to avoid problems...but it struggles pulling some of my implements. My dethatcher and aerator I have to only engage on a downhill otherwise it will overheat the drive controller and stop on me.

I have 1.5 acres, one small hill a soccer ball might roll down but it's only 2-3 passes worth, rest all flat. Now I wonder if they'll come out with a snowblower for it..... if so I'm definitely in. I feel like i still need my Cub Cadet for winter. Thanks again for the awesome reply!

@@donothangamble I got the garden tractor version. You will also need a hitch for the Ryobi. I need to get a new hitch that has a little more drop to it. The LGT striper mounts up to the hitch where a ball would go.

Good review. However, as a senior electrical engineer, I have to disagree with the Ryobi technician assessment. Lower battery charge will not and cannot result in more stress on the electronics. In fact, the opposite is true. Less voltage and current capability will result in less electrical and thermal stress to the controllers (and motors). With that said, it is feasible that either A) the voltage dropped below or temp went above an acceptable safety threshold while cutting the hills, causing the mower to shut off to protect the batteries/electronics, or B) heat buildup from cutting the flat parts and then the hills caused a thermal-related failure. If the mower didn't recover after a recharge, then possibility B is likely true, and Ryobi may need to improve heat dissipation from the controller. In either scenario, mowing the hills first will likely help, but not for the reason the technician provided. Mowing the hills first ensures you don't already have heat built up before starting the most difficult part. It's possible you just got unlucky and received a bad controller with premature failure, or it could be a design issue that should be addressed with better heatsink or air flow.

The EGO lawn tractor was not available when I purchased this unit. I do like the EGO products. I have a trimmer multi-tool, snow blower, and 650 CFM leaf blower so I am already invested in the EGO ecosystem. I didn't want a zero turn because I have some slopes and I wanted to be able to tow my implements.

The tech is def already here with Ego's Arc Batteries. Many have similar complaints about Ryobi's electric mowers. And its solely due to them, for whatever ignorant reason choosing to go with a rather odd battery design and power delivery system. Unlike Ego. Same thing goes for electric cars. Just like how you hear people say they hate electric cars or have bad experiences with them. Its likely cause that experience wasnt with a telsa. Im not saying telsa's dont have faults. But compared to other electric vehicles on the market you can tell they know what they are doing and that they have been doing it right from the get go, and for the longest. Ego knows how to make outstanding electric yard equipment. Ryobi is new to the game wanting a piece of the action. So anyone who got these mowers were a beta tester to a new platform.

I hear ya 😂 I stay as far away from politics as possible. I got it because it takes 45 minutes each time I have to go fill up my gas cans. I also don't have to change oil, deck belts, plugs, filters, etc.
