This video is awesome. My dad is gonna need a new laptop this year, and his whole life he's never been able to use a full desktop, always needing a thin and light. This new gen of ryzen processors looks amazing in workloads, and while the fact that integrated graphics have come such a long way is not something my dad will care much about, it blows me away and is still an added bonus. I'll definitely be on the lookout for a 6000 U series laptop for him.

@@Ravenousjoe Might as well pay the slight premium for that huge GPU performance boost, though. If you want to save some real money, get a laptop with Ryzen 5000 series. I got one a couple months ago, and (coming from an Intel 4th gen 7 pound behemoth from 2014), the Ryzen 7 5800H blew me away. Even the Vega graphics seem great coming from something so old - 720p30fps Elden Ring on a tiny laptop seems impossible after using old tech for so long. Still, if you're gonna upgrade to 6000 series, really do consider paying that little bit extra - the RDNA2 iGPU is the headlining feature, after all.

@@MegaAdeny I will see. It's a work laptop that doesnt need the extra cores (hence why an excavator 2c worked for so long), so it's gotta go by my boss. ~$750 CAD is the upper budget which won't get me much outside the 6600U, 16gb and nvme.

The BIOS takes a screenshot of everything displayed on the screen every 2 minutes, and overlays it over an average. It basically stores a bitmap of the average amount of light that's been emitted in its lifetime and then you have a single slider that controls how much of the inverted picture you want to display on top to cancel out burn in!

I´ve been using mine for over one year now (Zenbook 13 UX325E with OLED) and it doesn´t have any burnmarks and I´ve been using it a lot. Asus really did a great job with last years laptops and i only exept the best from them and i´m pretty sure the new one with the AMD is even much better. Also what I´ve noticed on many HP and Lenovo laptops is, that they tend to lose quality pretty fast with annoying fans activating randomly, software issues like the brightness regulator doesnt work anymore or you cant change the volume anymore. I must say I didn´t have even one struggle with my laptop troughout this whole last year and i´m really impressed and also was never dissapointed by asus unlike every other tech company.

The alder Lake 1260p in the Lenovo Yoga actually has a lot more power headroom. It's set for sustained PL1 of 38W and a burst PL2 of 64W while plugged in, and 55W on battery. That's substantially higher than the 17w PL1 and 30WPL2 set for the 6800u in the Zenbook S. These P-series really complicate the lineup. I wonder how the Alderlake-u series compare since they vary between 9W-29W and 15W-55W SKUs.

Exciting times. I was always drawn towards 13" thin and light laptops with good battery performance. Ended up with an XPS 9380 and happy overall, but the iGPU is not even remotely able to handle Destiny for example. New AMD APUs seem to be able to solve this last downside but I'm not sure if this Zenbook is already the implementation I want to purchase. For sure there will be more alternatives till the end of this year. Really looking forward. Good job, AMD :).

13:13 - the fact that it's glossy is what makes it good. Glossy surface, unlike matte is completely smooth and transparent, which makes the image rich, bright, and much more natural-looking compared to matte. Dave 2D covered that recently and it's a night and day difference. Now what I don't understand why is it ONLY present in ultrabooks and not in gaming laptops. Especially considering that ultrabooks are often used outdoors and gaming laptops are almost always used indoors where you have control over your lighting conditions.

3:30 when i do a generational efficiency comparrisons, or just a comparrision between devices and i want to take the screen out of the equation for some reason, i normally use an external monitor and disable the built in monitor(i also use this for AIO desktops). Or i may have the screen shut off(but sleep disabled) after just 1 minute if its a long test that short ammount of screen on time is hardly going to make a difference. This was how i found out that the laptops we use at work with the Ryzen 4750u, are actually more efficient in Handbrake than my M1 Mac Mini. They both took roughly the same time to transcode an identical video(took more than an hour for both of them, the 4750u was something like 0.8% faster in total time), but the Mac Mini used 33Wh from the wall, while the thinkpad only used 28Wh from the wall. Surprizing because of several reasons. Top 2 reasons (tie for bewilderment) Apple is on 5nm while AMD is on 7nm AMD is using CISC X86-AMD64, while Apple uses ARM RISC This is odd because TSMC has stated that going from 7nm, down to 5nm, should offer 30% more performance, at 15% less power, in other words Apple lost, while having a near 50% node advantage(note this is just for this one task, the M1 normally doesnt compare this badly) Combine this near 50% node advantage, with the fact that Apple is supposedly using RISC, and i would have expected the M1 to be near 1/2 the power usage of the 4750u To throw more flames on the fire, even if the chips themselves were the exact same efficiency, i would have expected the laptop to use more power because it had a smaller cooler, and needed to push more air(loudly). The laptop is also less integrated, meaning each part other than the CPU uses more power to both move data back and forth, but also just to function as normal, and finally, the Mac Mini didnt need to power a keyboard or trackpad/trackpoint

But M1 is at the bottom of the M1 family, 4750U is not at the bottom of Ryzen 4000 family That laptop with 4750U also probably costs more mac mini Doesnt exactly look like a fair comparison imao
@denvera1g1
@denvera1g1 2 жыл бұрын
@@suntzu1409 You're not wrong, more of a misleading correct. The 4750u was the best CPU AMD offered..... in thin and light laptop. and the base model M1 is still the only CPU offered in Apple's thin and light laptops. Both Apple and AMD have many many more CPUs, and if we're talking about the most powerful processor even the 20 core M1 Ultra(2x M1 Max) cannot compete with 128 cores of EPYC 3D (2x7773X). 2 things 1: The Mac Mini doesnt have a screen, keyboard, mouse, card reader, or a battery, so of course its cheaper at its base configurtarion of 8GB+256GB, but once you add RAM and SSD, it gets more expensive. 2: The M1 cannot be services so its not really a fair comparrison to compare it against a device you actually own, or hear me out, my first 2 points, as well as yours doesnt matter when you're talking about the efficiency of 2 of the parts inside where the cost of the device, and other products on offer inb different classes ofproducts are completely unrelated to the efficiency. IF you're concerned as to weather which one was more expensive, my Mac Mini was more expensive(i know how much the laptops at work cost because i ordered them). My M1 Mac mini has less RAM and the same storage, but we've sice gotten 4x the storage for ~$100, whichcant be done with my Mac Mini, but like i allude to here, i didnt mention the price because for the sake of efficiency, price, does, not, matter. If you were concerned that i was comparing the base model M1 when i should have been using an M1 Pro or M1 Max, Its my understanding based on my benchmarks between my M1 Mac Mini, and my friends M1 Pro Macbook(10 core), the M1 is more efficient, my guess is that the M1 Pro is being pushed to higher frequencies, which always reduced efficiency, and unlike an intel/AMD processor, i cant seem to underclock the M1 to get better efficiency(at 45w my 3950x is almost 2x as efficient than when running at 150w). Yes the M1 Pro gets the task done faster, by alot, but it uses disproportunately more power to do so, I didnt still have the same file i tested on the 4750u originally, but i took a 60 minute 1080p30 TV recording in MPEG2, and transcoded it. On my mac mini it took 1h9m, and used 31Wh. My friend's MacBook Pro did the same transcode in ~0h34m, but used 38Wh. EDIT, i think if the M1 Pro were offered in the Mac Mini that the power usage would drop to maybe the same as trhe M1 in my Mac Mini. Yes its less efficient on the CPU, but because the task gets done more quickly, there are less incidental power draws from the storage and RAM reducing the efficiency.

Great review! One thing Ill disagree on though is the glossy screen. I much prefer glossy over the "anti reflective" coating even with that lower brightness. I agree its annoying when outside or in veeery bright environments, but still looks better to me. Also: Owning the 2021 Model already my summary would be this: The only thing I like more about the 2022 model is the iGPU (and the color). I like that i have an HDMI (even HDMI 2.1 from what I read) and a USB-A port, I dont care about the Headphone jack and 2.5k resolution is nice, but id rather have 120Hz instead. Still looks like a good machine - very good in regards to iGPU -, but no upgrade needed all things considered. Skyrim is already playable aswell as GTA V. Also. Any Update on the Trackpad?

Glad to hear you criticizing the glossy display: to me it's almost a no-no. What makes me infuriating is that I own a 48" OLED TV by LG, it's matte finished and it's so beautiful to look at; on a laptop it'd be ever more obvious to go this way. In addition, it's now available the flip version, which I'd choose because of the 1in2 form factor and the stylus ready display; sadly, besides the glossy display, they put the Intel 1260p cpu instead of the 6800u inside. Thanks for the review. A couple of questions.... So if only one of the USB-c ports supports both PD (aka charging) and video-out, how would I connect this to an external monitor and charge it at the same time. It sounds like it is NOT possible. Please adivse. Does it/will it support USB-4. I thought the AMD 6000 was capable of supporting USB-4. I've heard some say that it could be added via a firmware update. Is that true? It's a shame it doesn't offer a matte screen option. OLED panels are great if you work in only a dimly environment. Forget working in well-lit or out doors (e.g., on my partially covered outdoor patio).

Sadly Intel is paying Dell too much money (or giving huge discounts) to have Dell make an AMD-powered XPS. The XPS is Intel's most premier & respected laptop out there (for good reason, it's a fantastic laptop). If AMD takes that, it's a huge blow to their reputation.

I got the 14" intel i5 version of this. With 16gigs of ram and an OEM samsung 512gigs 980 pro ssd. I purchased it for 1100€ from amazon (tax included). The i7 version cost 1400€. I don't know why but the IGPU underperform. It peak at 10w for short period of time and runs at around 1ghz instead of the max possible 1300mhz. In benchmarks, the score is lower but not by much. In games, performance is terrible and i don't know why it behaves like this. I compared it to the IGPU of a 11300H who sustain 35w in total and 12w on the GPU. The 11300H PC is cooled by 2 fans and the temps are much lower than the zenbook. Apart from the odd IGPU behavior, this is a really good laptop.

How does this compare to the thinkpad nano X1 Gen 2? I'm looking at a config with a i7 1260(i think) same amount of Ram. I don't game but do occasionally edit video. I just want the lightest laptop and I will use it for some music production. I'm nervous about the ThinkPad because it's Intel and I'd be moving from a Zephyrus G14 that has a 4900HS which hasn't failed me one bit so I'm inclined to stick with an AMD based machine but the lighter the better at this point!

I'm always amused when influencers / people complain about glossy screens on Windows laptops but never on MacBooks. I'm not a fan of glossy screens myself, but it's just interesting that it's rarely a talking point when discussing MacBooks. Perhaps Apple doesn't allow it in the review kit lol. Good review otherwise, though the consensus across user reviews is that the trackpad is quite good. I wonder if you got sent a bad unit or there was a driver update that fixed it. Cheers and happy holidays up north!
