Tip at 30mins is new for me and will be adding to my next calamity. Number 3 . Need to find a white paint that will stick to metal. And addition cure silicone will stick and set to. . Most recent disaster was a cast that didn't set after the thing was left on a heater for a week. Painted the armature and mold for a smooth finish and got a blob. Keylon white enamel. It also mildly broke the mold. The previous one sompletly stuck to the mold that needed smashing and still had cure inhibition on a few lubricated parts of armature. . Getting through the materials cronic with little results but still enjoying the process.

Painting the ultra cal seems to be a sure way to not get bubbles but if ya want to do it quick You can pour a little then vibrate it with a vibrating table or run a drill while holding it against the outside wall like they do in dental labs and when making prosthetics
@richiebricker Жыл бұрын
And youre not gonna waste your time casting a Gold Crown or a Bridge on a mold with bubbles so at a dental lab its worth the 'investment' (pun intended) to get a vibrating table. Most are about the size of your mold and it really getsthe bubbles out

Where can I buy the silicone and armature parts, locally. It doesn't seem that the local hobby and hardware stores in my area sell this kind of stuff.

Why don't you do the lego method that you used for the head and shoes. Also, how do you connect the body parts together once they're all cured?

What should the consistency of the plaster be? Also does the container used to store WED clay need to be airtight?
@stopmotionmagazine9 жыл бұрын
+Angus Lamont (AnimateAngus) Plaster should be like a thin milkshake. Yes always make your WED clay container air tight.

Thanks so much for this comprehensive tut! My only question is why is it important to specifically use water based clay? You mentioned something about chemical reactions but I'm unaware of any potential chemical reaction between something like Plastalina oil based clay and Ultra Cal. Is there something I'm missing? Only asking because I'm about to start this process with Plastalina because I don't have the time to wait for WED clay to ship. (FYI, my model was sculpted with Chavant Med Hard). Thanks again!
@annamelin67055 жыл бұрын
Hey, how did Plastalina work out for you? I've the same problem. I could buy Wed but it only comes in 11kgs here and it seems a bit much

HI there! I hope you are still responding to questions! I want to make the switch from dragon skin to tinsil gel and was wondering if there was a specific kind that you used? Also it isn't listed on the engineering guy's website- they have something called smooth-sil. Would you mind posting a link to the brand of silicone you used in the video? I would be so grateful! Thank you! and thank you for the great video- my mold turned out fantastic!
@stopmotionmagazine8 жыл бұрын
+Molly McCandless I would suggest looking up MotionPictureFX that's where I buy TinSil Gel, but there are lots of suppliers. If you can find one closer to you I would suggest that. Also, buy a small amount to test with and make sure you like it.

Very helpful video, I have a question in relation to what the mold can be used for. In your video you said the mold can be used for casting foam latex and silicone. My question is, can this mold also be used to cast resin? Your answer would be very much appreciated.
@stopmotionmagazine8 жыл бұрын
+eric izzard No, you need to cast Resin in a Silicone mold.
@Eric-hl3zb8 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your response. Just one other question, do you have any experience with casting resin? If so I would much appreciate it if you could make a tutorial or direct me to one.
@stopmotionmagazine8 жыл бұрын
+eric izzard Checkout our Puppet Head Casting Video. We use a Silicone Mold and 2 part fast casting resin.

This maybe a stupid question but, is it possible to make a mold out of polymer clay or super sculpey without the clay breaking after baking?
@Spinocroc1237 жыл бұрын
No. For puppets it's definitely better to use a silicone or ultracal 30 mold. Depending on the sculpture and the casting material.

Could you substitute Krylon Workable Fixitive for Dulling spray?
@stopmotionmagazine9 жыл бұрын
The Krylon Crystal Clear is what acts as the barrier. The Dulling Spray acts to take the smoothness out of the Crystal Clear and give it a rough surface. You definitely will need to use the Krylon Crystal Clear, but you can omit the Dulling spray if you need to. You won't get amazing results, but it will still work.

How long did you leave it to peel off your WED clay? Mine has not stayed together like yours and has clung to the model and plaster
@stopmotionmagazine9 жыл бұрын
Well you have to let the Ultracal30 cure. You should also spray your WED surface with crystal clear before you pour your mold. And lastly, it's WED Clay so don't be afraid to use a bristle brush and waster to clean up the mold half. Heck, sometimes I put the mold half under the gardenhose if I know it's not going to hurt anything.
@NilePlumb9 жыл бұрын
Actually before reading this I just put mine under the shower (took the shower head off and put finger over the spout) saw them doing it on face off thought I'd give it a go, worked brilliantly didn't even damage the original chavant clay model in the slightest and I was being quite close and powerful with the water blast now to smooth out my original attempts at digging the clay out and do the back half. I had used a mould release on the model and WED front and back but it just stuck fast and I did it too quick probably as the wed clay was slightly warm and very soft. I'll put a blog post up about it on www.NilePlumb.co.uk soon

i working on this...looks fine...however...the plaster dripped through inbetween the cast and the foamboard... any tips on that?
@stopmotionmagazine8 жыл бұрын
+Emanuel Wiemans Make sure you build up the clay on to the walls of the foam board. I also take a wet finger and rub along the crease to insure no gaps.

How much would it cost to make one of these on average for everything ?
@stopmotionmagazine8 жыл бұрын
+High Films $200 for all the stuff in a small quantity and you should be able to get 2 or 3 puppets out of it. Once the mold is done you can make a lot more and the cost goes way down. It's really just time.

in the uk its hard to find WED clay. What alternatives are there? would any air drying clay do?
@stopmotionmagazine9 жыл бұрын
The Fryer If you can find a water based clay that is used for sculpting then that should do. Paper clay is crappy, but can be used it you absolutely have not other option. Good luck and lets us know what you come up with. Cheers!

Why the head and the feet are made out of plastic and the body is made out of silicone rubber? Why we need to use two different methods?
@stopmotionmagazine9 жыл бұрын
spinocroc123 It's a simpler method than the whole armature being in the feet and hands. Also, this is a basics casting/puppet tutorial. The feet are cast in plastic and are extremely strong. You'll end up with a better ability to get the poses from the puppet and not worry about that part of the armature breaking. The Hands are static and can be replaced to form fists and pointing. Nothing will stick to silicone. So you will run into problems when animating the character and you want them to hold or grab something if the hands are made of silicone. Once again this is a basics tutorial so I'm giving you an option that will allow you to work faster when you animate and get more done in less time. @spinocroc123 I thought I explained this in the video... Didn't I? Sorry if I didn't...
