Last year we decided to stop watching TV for 6 months. In the process we learned a lot of new skills and made the internet very angry.
Today I'm breaking down our decision in detail and sharing my best tips for doing your own tech fast.

I've removed the TV from my home twice now. The first issue was constantly increasing cost, second was amount of repeat shows even with hundreds of channels, third was the constant negativity being pushed. I've not missed it one little bit.... now I'm here! I watch what i want, learn what i want, when I want!

I cancelled by cable subscription in 2005. I use my TV to play DVDs, but it's not connected to any TV service, and life is good.

It’s very freeing! I believe KZfaq will be the new TV programming. I get to subscribe to cooking channels, crafting, gardening, documentaries and even nostalgic movies.

We have gone without TV twice. Once was years ago when our old TV broke and we couldn't afford to get another one. It was awesome! Our kids were in junior high at the time and we had so much better family times! We did things like played clue in the dark by candlelight. We would listen to books on tape as a family. It was just wonderful! Unfortunately it drove my mother nuts that we didn't have a TV so for Christmas she bought us a TV. That was quite the bummer. Jump ahead 20 years, my husband and I are now living off grid and we have chosen not to have a TV! I love it! We get much more done. We could have a TV if we wanted to because we have solar power but we have chosen not to. At night after dark we play cards, we read, he does Sudoku puzzles, I knit and sew. Life is so much better without a TV. I do have my phone so I can listen to things like your podcast and I just turn it on stick my phone in my back pocket and go about my day while I listen.

Hello from Iowa! Our now 14 yr old son had gotten his first video game in 2021 and in 2023 we got rid of it. He instantly found a new hobby of riding bikes and exploring his own interests! He has been homeschooled since 2020 and he continues to amaze us daily with how well he is thriving! Love old fashioned on purpose, we homestead (chickens, garden, canning, preserving, etc.) in a city and we love the amazing changes we are all experiencing! Keep up the great work!

Jill, DO NOT apologize for the way you raise your children! If someone is judging you, it's not about you as it is something inside themselves. I don't agree with those that judge others. It is none of their business to begin with. I know that the ones that are negative have been programmed since an early age and can't break from it. I pray they wake up and soon! Keep doing what you are doing honey. I send love to you and your family. Granny from NE Florida 🌴💖😘

I cancelled my cable subscription back in 2005 and haven't had TV since then. I have a television I play DVDs on, but it's not connected to any TV service, and life is wonderful. With the internet to get all the news and information one needs, who needs TV? I can't stand a home or office waiting room where the TV is just senselessly running on and on in the background. It just creates mental noise. Without the constant "alarm" of a 24-hour cable TV new cycle, life is so much calmer.

Same here back in 2007 we moved to the country where cable was non existent. We use the internet on our tablets and youtube or Prime is our new programming. Real people with first hand knowledge and experience. No tv blaring 24/7 in this house, and no more news telling us how to feel . The odd time I’ll catch current tv programming on youtube and am aghast at the advertising! Mostly pharmaceuticals being pushed on unsuspecting citizens. 😕

@@chickadeeacres3864 Yes, there are LOTS of political messages being pushed through TV and even print advertising in the last 10 to 15 years. People must take more control of what they expose themselves to because they don't realize the subconscious effect it has on them over time.

We gave up TV for Lent and I'm already astounded at the good results I see in my children. For instance, my toddlers And preschoolers have developed a much longer attention span you can play with their toys for hours rather than just a few minutes. ❤

When we started homeschooling 18 years ago, we got rid of the TV connection. We kept the TV hooked to. DVD player for vetted movies and documentaries. It made our house much more peaceful and focused. Even Dad gave up the sports/movies which gave us more time together.

My dad was born in 1952 and has said many times that he can remember as a small boy when they got their first TV and he was so mad and hated it because it took away the times the did things as a family and his parents and grandparents (who lived with them) sat around and told stories. I am single and can’t remember the last time I turned on my TV. I’m doing other things or reading and I haven’t missed it one bit. Jill people of the world only know worldly things….you do what’s best for you and your family follow what God puts on your heart and you can’t go wrong. My my vantage point you seem to have a beautiful life. God bless and may 2024 continue to be filled with happiness and abundance for you and your family!!

LOVED this episode!!! The backlash from the Internet is baffling and laughable, all I can do is shake my head at those people. My fiancee and I have similar plans to have a low-tech house for ourselves and our kids. I've been learning about how EMF radiation is also really damaging, especially to children as they are smaller and have thinner skulls. We plan to hard wire things (1 computer, landlines, etc) instead of wifi and cellphones. You'll never hear that from the FCC though! Thanks, Jill! You're inspiring all around!

I disconnected cable years ago and then when I moved to the country, farmer vision was all there was and so movies took the place. In comes internet and although I have not watched a TV in almost 2 years, I find it is being replaced with my lap top. Recently figured out the amount of watching "to learn something" has been replaced with mindless watching where "there was 15 minutes of my life I will not get back" is muttered under my breath. I use laptop for business so it is tricky and every once and a while a movie is okay, but I definitely spend too much time scrolling, even though TV is not a part of that. Decided the other day that that needs to change. Good discussion!

I loved this! We did this back in 1996 when our kids were in elementary school. It was wonderful. There was no “social media” then but turning off the TV was great. He had VHS so it we wanted to watch something it was usually an old movie or once in a while we would rent a movie. To this day, neither of our kids, now 37 and 39 watch TV. Since it was not part of their growing up they did not develop the habit. Both of our kids own their own homes are are very productive people.

When my children were young we didn't have a TV... I had people tell me I was horrible for this.. however now I have five grown children. Two paid firefighters, two cna in local nursing home and one stay at home momma.. same with cell phones they were able to get one as soon as they could pay for it... So they were 17 or 18 before they got one... To this day my husband and I have a small TV in our room that is only hooked up to a DVD player... It never comes on... On the topic of my kids. They spent their time teaching themselves to play instruments.. and played and sung in the church band... Give them the time to be creative and they will bloom.. also as adults my kids and their families still get together monthly and have great relationships..

We are in exactly the same place with our two children. We have stopped movies and video games but it's due to unsettled sleep. Nightmares and also trouble going to sleep. I am hoping more creative time will tire them out more for peaceful nights for all of us. Day 2 and counting. Fingers crossed.

I’m in my third round of no tv. First was when I was a teen. My mom was warned that the picture tube was weak. When the tv died, she said that’s it it’s too expensive to fix and we did without. My brother was playing around and all of a sudden it started. Turns our it was a $2 power cord. The second time was when I went back to school as an adult. Thought that it would be too much of a distraction. And this round was because I felt that the price of satellite tv (the only type available where I live) wasn’t worth it for what I actually was watching.

I grew up in the 80s/90s. There was not a TV in our house. My mom was really anti-TV so we just didn't have one. Now I'm a mom and I can see how it's easier to just not have one than it would be to try to be disciplined about TV use. I think people who've never tried it realize that kids trashing the house isn't the only non-TV child entertainment alternative. Send them outside! Kids aren't as cold-adverse as adults. Its s cold March day today and our 3 year old is perfectly content playing in the sandbox for the last hour.

No TV for 4 years now. The ease of turning it on and using a remote flicking through channels without even getting up. The convenience of a TV is fatal. No subscriptions no cost. TVs use quite a lot of energy as well. We do have laptops for larger screen entertainment for the family. We use smart phones for comms and KZfaq and Rumble. No sports at all on a screen. Sports come for us in real life only. Board games. Dice games. Card games and traditional games like Monopoly. All family stuff. Our children are able to point out propoganda to us in real life. When we unwittingly go to a pub with TV screens they point out the propoganda there as well, especially the blue over yellow. As Juvenal said, "Bread and circuses". Our children are home schooled. The Globalists have no place in our home. No regrets.

Hi Jill, thanks for making me think. On reflection it seems to me that the 'controversial ' part is the mindless activity way more than the planned, discussed and creative activity. Oh also thanks for helping me to see how temporary 'boredom ' helps me to reset my intentions. Loved this topic and video. Debs from Down Under and an inspired 66 year young.

Audio podcasts seem the way to go. Just put on a Bluetooth headset or ear buds and listen while you are doing something else. Or listen when you are driving - otherwise dead time. You’re not really hard on the eyes or anything, but there’s really no reason to be sitting and watching you talk. Might be better off just bluetoothing the audio on your shows.
