And don't forget that the 12 weeks of unpaid leave includes any time you take for appointments or pregnancy complications. I had a horrific pregnancy, almost died multiple times, spent a total of 10 weeks hospitalized before giving birth to a premature baby so small that they literally didn't even register on the preemie percentage scale. I gave birth at 10:30 p.m. on a Thursday, which also happened to be the final day of my 12 weeks. I was told to report to the office Friday or be fired. I got a lawyer and ended up getting a few extra weeks, but it was nowhere near with time. It's been about 12 years and my kid and I both still suffer long-term health issues from it, and I decided not to have any more kids because I was terrified I'd have a similar experience, most my job and be homeless with my kids. Great work, America.

I've always thought it's odd people talk about only women getting paid time off after a baby. I comprehend it's extra important for a little while for a mother to recover after a stressful, painful birth, but I think fathers should have some paid time off as well. Having a brand new baby is a stressful and emotional time for both parents after all, and both parents could use the time together to figure out all the stuff they need to figure out.

Yes lets force women to have children then make them go right back to work. Its all about the company and control over its workers and especially women in America. It takes time for a women to heal after a birth plus they should have time to spend with their child. But it should be there choice if they happen to get pregnant then it should be between the doctor and the womens decision especially if it isn't safe. Its a health issue. Now they want to ban the pill so basically its about their religion onto a women and their own choice to make. If they actually cared about kids then they would create laws to help the women with childcare who might be poor or even materinity leave. Nope get back make the corporation and CEOs rich while stealing your money and resources. Its a sick system.

So far as I'm aware, the EU minimum is set by the 1992 Pregnant Workers Directive at 14 weeks. There is also a right to 2 weeks of paternity leave. Many countries grant more generous leave, but I don't think that they all offer 2 years. Portugal, for example, apparently offers up to 150 days, paid at 80%. Even Sweden, which is one of the most generous, seems to grant a total of 480 parental leave days. Some countries (such as Germany) offer up to 3 years, during which time one can claim state benefits. In Germany, much of that leave can be taken later in the child's life (before they're 8).
@AdelaAlonsoAlonso
@AdelaAlonsoAlonso 2 күн бұрын
Spanish here - In spain we have one of the shortest paid family leaves in Europe. We have mandatory maternity and paternity leave that is both paid, and tax-free. On top of that, there is additional "lactation" time that mothers can choose to shorten their work day or to take it together for I believe it's 3 additional weeks of paid leave. On top of that there are state-funded nurseries you can leave your kid in when you go back to work. These are all natality-promoting initiatives : the idea is that if the government supports parents in "derisking" having a child, then more families will choose to have them. A very different approach to, you know, forced birth.

Here's my stance on maternity leave. Yes we should have them, paid, longish term (3+ month). We should even get a 1 month+ paternity leave. It should be paid via a tax or insurace based system where the leave is paid by all employers of the state(or nation) and not just the employer of the person in question. It should not only cover the pay for the employee, but even the marginal cost of hiring a temp for the employer up to an extend. Marginal cost meaning the additional cost, if any, of the temp over the regular pay of the original employee. Now, I'm sure the first bits are easy to understand, but you might wonder about the last bit. That is simply due to statistics and small business. And by small business I mean the actual small ones with a dozen or less employee and not whatever the government defined things to be. Now, even those will likely be able to absorb tempoarily losing one employee. But they would have a great deal of trouble dealing with losing say 3. Which comes back to tith longer termed leave, it increases the probability of overlaps, which makes "3" more likely. When and if that happens, there is a liklihood that the small business do need to hire new workers to replace the lost labor. Given that we should offer a "job return gurantee" for those on leave, there is a chance that those new hires can only be tempoary, as the small business might not be ready for permanent increase in labor cost. As it were, depending on the top of job, there is every chance that temp worker/contractor costing more than a long term employee, given that they could not offer job security as part of the "deal". To be honest, even that might not cover the whole thing, there could be overhead for HR and training. But for small businesses, these tend to be done by the owner and might not have monetary cost and would be hard to measure. I know that some people might not care about business owner at all and as such would not care for this potential cost and coverage for them. But in reality, this too is meant to benefit/protect workers. Because without it, there would be an financial incentive to "discriminate" in hiring, to avoid the costs. The "discriminate" is in quotes in that it isn't actually discrimination if there is an obejctive, functional reason. Fundimentally, equality can only be properly enforced if the underlying value is actually equal, so we need to compensate for any potential deviations that we can think of. It will never be perfect, but we can certainly try and make it closer. Now, this isn't really a problem for big employers, in that they can effectively "self insure" against this. Statistical distribution tends toward the expected value as a matter of percentage as the sample size increase. This means that for a large enough company, their "leave" rate would be similar to that of the state or nation. In such a case, it would make little difference for them to redistribute and absorb the cost themselves or for the government to do it for them. But, small business, being on the opposite of the statistical spectrum, are much more likely to have outlier spikes that is ruinous and thus need to be accounted for.
