This hand-built jet-powered RC model plane is a scale replica of the 1950s Saab 29 Tunnan fighter. It flew extremely well at the 2022 NZJMA fly-in at the Tokoroa Airfield (NZTO) in New Zealand with only one unfortunate landing.

Excellent landing with the gear stuck halfway down like that. Sucks about the crash but it looks easily fixable. That beauty needs to be back in the air.

The very beginning looks like I was looking at a real one (size). WOW I though maybe this was 1/4 scale size. The poor thing in the end I hope it wasn't too serious. I love the Tunnans, so cute!

What's amazing to me is that no matter the real machine or the scale model machine, it's all built by hand to extremely tight tolerances. Beautiful machine-- great camera lock too!

Great choice of model. I saw one of these at a flying display a few years ago (along with a Viggen, also impressive). I was stunned by what a nimble and manoevrable little airplane it was - very impressive and I fell in love with it straight away. It looks so cool in plan view with those 'Mig 15' looking wings

Anekdote from a pilot of a J29 back in the day: (as recollected from reading it) This pilot were taking part in an exercise were he would act as a single "aggressor", with the stated task of attacking a ground target. As such he were to expect to encounter J32B fighters en route. After some time, he saw something in the rearview mirror, and immidiately started to fly defensively, turning and jinking. The thing was, that it didn't matter what kind of manouvers he pulled, the advesary stuck to his six through all of his attempts to loose him. Then he realised that it was not a fighter outside, but an ordinary fly sitting on the mirror. As fighter pilots tends to think of themselfs as test-pilots, he of course could do nothing but postulate a question on how many G's, this fly could withstand before loosing its adherence to the mirror surface. So he started to test his postulated question... Later back at the base, the mechanics grew more and more perturbed, as they found wrinkles and cracks where none should be expected.

Yes its not main stream but does hold presence in the air and well done to select such a plane. Portly and close to the ground makes for a precision landing, wonder it did not have a bumper at the rear to ensure the fuse did not scrape, real one that is. Pity it lost a wheel..
@Siamect

Crosswind landings with these was killing some pilots in the early days... The swept wings was a novelty at the time and in combination with the barrel shaped body it resulted in the leeward wing losing lift very quickly if the speed was low. By the way... "Tunnan" means "The Barrel" in swedish...

That's why the put the "fins" on the wings, to keep airflow over the surface. And they trained the pilots to use rudder instead of ailerons if the plane started to lean over at low speed.

with all of that detail and attention to function, they need to quit being called models and be known as Scaled Replicas, the word models just doesnt give them the respect they deserve.

Heavily based on a Messerschmitt design. Same with the Lansen. SAAB took on a former Messerschmitt aerodynamicist and it seems, blueprints. The "Barrel" is heavily related to the P.1101 which was used for research into swept wing geometry.
