I can relate to Sahara so much. As a friend of a disabled long time companion back in 19-something, I have witnessed what the people who were in the room did to them. Brainwashing them to the extent that they lose their self-worth through bullying. I wanted it to stop and defend my companion but I was too cowardly to do so since the thought of others bullying me scared me and I just don't want to deal with the heavy weight of self-inflicted guilt that was brought to the bullied. So, I did what most doctors would say: "First, do no harm." and show defense through kindness, but unlike Sahara, I acted in secret to keep my swollen and pathetic pride. I wonder how they are doing now? Thanks for the analysis, it was executed and the delivery was on point. It's nice to hear that there's at least one otaku who doesn't spit out a thesaurus of swear words when they discuss. 😄 But still, Kōwai is a walking brain tumor that needs to be plucked out with a chainsaw and be thrown into the Pacific Ring of Fire.

i really have a huge crush on Sahara. i just knew the moment she appeared she would be a favorite i just saw the movie a few hours ago before seeing this in recommended. she reminds me a little of myself. now i need to find the manga

I know she was one of the characters that got cut the most in the film but she was such a sweetheart in that too and I'm so glad I read the manga to see her full beauty on display. Truly we all need more Shara's in this world.

I have to say after watching your anaylsis, I just found out the extent which I could relate sahara , I cant believe how little I appreciated her before since koe no katachi has such an amazing and diverse cast of characters. I never really thought about Sahara. It's admirable though to always aim for self improvement, even when so many things make you want to deter from making better choices. I would love to see a character analyses on Masami Iwasawa from Angel Beats! (She was my favourite from that show, though the other characters were great too. Especially Hinata) Btw was humming along to the Hunter x Hunter tune. That was my favourite ending song from the show

6:32 I remember very clearly. You're right about what you said in your Ueno video. Ueno was the only one to contact Ishida after the incident on the bridge. I find myself relating to Sahara, but not entirely. Both of us can see who we want to be and who we are actually are. That is where the differences begin. She is ultimately able to change to become more like who she wants to be. In a way, it's like she zoomed past me in a race and came 1st. My attempts to change are small. My bad habits from who I actually am, keep on popping up whenever I try to change to who I want to become. I think another problem I have is that who I want to be is always changing. It's as if, I want to be too many things. A musician, an artist, a teacher and even stereotypical personality types like kuudere and dandere (with some chunibyou, I'll admit). Another thing I can relate to Sahara is how we value other peoples' words and opinions on ourselves. These seemingly small things are enough to change what we do. Like how Ueno's opinions (bullying) on Sahara caused her to stop going to school (properly). Whenever people tell me something that seems wrong or would be done better in their way. I would often change to do what they want. In a way, you could view me as a Pushover. Somebody who commits to another's words whether they disagree or not. I do this because I'm afraid of how that person's opinion on me could change. When Sahara changes, she is finally able to stand up to Ueno. Something I would struggle to do. Similar to Satoshi's position, I often find myself being the watcher; rather than an actor. Overall, Sahara is a very good character. Almost everything about her made me question myself. "She's just like me, yet she's able to do so much more.. How can I achieve something like that?" Sahara is only one of the many characters who makes me asks questions like that. This is why I love Koe no Katachi so much.

I really like how you do the side characters. But I want to see your analysis on the main characters as well. Shoko and Shoya deserve their own video.

I am basically the real life equivalent of Sahara, I feel so connected to her character. It feels like Shoko was THAT deaf girl from my elementary school. I also like what you said at 7:56 to 8:15. I find what said in the manga, what you said, inspiring. Also yeah Miyoko Sahara is really the most relatable characters, I kind of find her easyness to forgive really curious in a way similar to Nishimiya how she forgave Ishida like almost instantly, I guess old saying goes "misery needs company".

You should do a character analysis of Shoya Ishida

I was very much like Sahara in school, in that I could never stand up for myself while bring bullied, but different since if I saw anyone else getting bullied, I immediately stood up for them. I was a lot like Shoko in that I blamed myself for everything happening, and I did it until very recently. I was also like Yuzuryu, with always feeling a need to look after a family memver and crying alone so I wouldn't worry anyone, as I felt like a burden. I've finally started loving myself, and letting others see the real me from the get go. I think that's why this movie affected me so much. I saw so much of myself, in Shoko, Yuzuru and Sahara that it scared me at first and then reminded me to not give up on becoming even stronger as a person so I can help more people, and look out for myself more as well.

Wow this was posted back in 2017....still can't help myself with posting this. Even though Sahara's problems were never really focused on with her timid nature. To be honest I think Sahara was the type of person Miki though/thinks she is. Miki wants to be seen as nice for show, while Sahara actually was kind, having a strong moral compass. She was the only one to raise her hand to learn sign and even continued to learn it (not only due to her feeling bad but because she wants to learn how to communicate with Shouko). If I remember correctly Sahara is never shown in the book or in the movie to be around when Shoko is being bullied.

Bro I miss you But seriously I love your videos. I wasnt active for a while because I thought i turned on the notification button buuuut i didnt turn it on (a new-ish phone) sorry Animu Dude. She is truly a relatable character. The way she feels, lacks and acts in the manga and in the anime. She is kinda reserved 70% and 30% not reserved. Her kindness makes her look fool and also Shouko too. Ever since she has been like talked behind her back, she has been so insecure of what she's doing good in front of them (like Ueno mostly and some other bullies) or what she's been doing bad made her feel to not trust her own tastes and thus kinda like not changing for a while (i feel like a mistake here idk what but sorry my bad). She only changes when people tell her something that was going to be different of what she's doing. Not the change that will make herself comfortable with ... well changing. For some reason she fears in the first place to change by herself. She envies of Ishida that he changed a lot and ends up being sad and feels she cant change. Probably a voice of hers said that, that makes her do such need of passion to change but ignore it. Ignore it but feel bad oneself. (im not sure if you got my sentences' point though sorry) Back then I was just like Sahara; coward, thinks of what others think, strives to be better each day, running away from problems, weaknesses are words, lack self confidence, etc. Probably some still these days but half of those I have, have improved. Tbh I always compare myself a lot and suddenly getting sad and rather making myself peer pressure when truly no one is pressuring me in the first place. And also I have a lot of characters that are like me but Sahara is like the most relatable and accurate character I have ever seen. I was a bit sad that she didnt got a lot of screentime but it was fine just need a liiiitle more then its a good screen time time (yes 2 times) . It is actually a rhetorical question for Shoya to consider. With this in mind, I believe Sahara's text does not represent her lack of change. Rather, it shows her willingness to help and reconcile even after Shoya's harsh words to her. Of course, your translation may be correct and I may have misinterpreted. Regardless, it is important to note that two characters - Ueno with repeated calls and Sahara with her profound question - did attempt to reach out again after the bridge incident. p.s. I love your analysis series and would love to see videos about Shoya and Shoko!

the fact that im 7 days late in seeing this vid upsets me. so i subbed. id like to see a character analyse of eren from attack on titan but im guessing you would have to go into manga territory to get a bigger picture of him and sadly im sticking with the anime for now. :3 i just think hes a fascinating main character and not in terms of how deep he is or anything but just how he breaks the norm of main characters for manga or anime and its refreshing. it kind of reminds me of scarface. scarface was a character who is heavily influenced by his emotions and sometimes results in the character acting carelessly or not acting when he should.

I think the text after the bridge scene didn't mean she cares about what everyone says about her. she only cared about how she could prove to ishida she's changed because she looked up to and idolized ishida as a role model. this was much more apparent after ishida was hospitalized, she constantly thinks what would ishida do when the real ishida isn't as perfect as she thought he was. i think this is why i didn't really like the bridge scene from the movie as much as the manga, the bridge scene was a scene for character growth for all of them because he was completely right about everyone and said the truth out loud, while in the movie it seemed like he was just lashing out unfairly and mashiba mistakes his character unlike in the manga where he completely understood the situation but still felt like the promise to punch ishida had to be fulfilled with ishida's consent.
