The roaring 40s finally start to roar is we sail our way deeper into the southern ocean. You won't believe the conditions we face double-handed with our sailing dog! Join us for a fantastic challenge out at sea!
#sailing #sailingaroundtheworld #southernocean
About Us:
We are two young racing sailors that decided to leave life on land and accomplish our goals of sailing around the world and learning about and experiencing different cultures. Originally from the Great Lakes, we left Newport Rhode Island in July of 2019 after refitting our boat DIY style. We then sailed to Maine, and from there down the East Coast of the USA, around Cape Hatteras, to the Bahamas, Back to Miami, and then to the Virgin Islands.
From there we headed south to Grenada to escape hurricane season, then back up to St. Maarten where we launched our first Atlantic Crossing to Horta, Azores. We made a quick trip back to the USA in July of '21 to defend our Chicago - Mackinac Race overall title, then it was back to cruising the Canaries, where we launched for our second Transatlantic voyage, sailing to Brazil in South America and on to Uruguay.
Our goal is to sail around the world via Cape Horn, and that is where we are headed now. Capturing footage to share this epic adventure with you as we round the horn and venture into the canals and fjords of Patagonia, Chile.

Chili. Sailing to the arctic each year NASA Jerry would make a gallon or two in a pressure cooker, bag meal&drop them in boiling water to heat. Add cheese, put on bread and you have quickie sloppie joe sandwiches anytime. I often cook in a coffeepot in an igloo cooler w/ spuds onion garlic, bit of meat, shrimp etc., jalapeno and soy sauce for spicey asian, or herbs&even a leg of lamb for a bigger dish and is unattended and spill proof. I have 2 litle ones-one for coffee, the other for cooking, and a bigger one for larger dishes.The igloo keeps heat in, using barely 35watts-3amps for 2-4 hours. NASA Jerry also rigged a gimbled stainless can w/ a lock for the pot in top and clamp for propane torch, but I built one w/ an old diesel burner that works w/ gas or diesel. BTW I assume the glove drowned.

Lovely sailing, by managing things well you get the rewards, like the awesome rainbow. It's as if you were inside the rainbow. I think you scooped up the gold (off camera). Interesting how you re-trained the autopilot, that must save lots of electricity but crucially preserve the autopilot from excessive use. I remember the answer to a question I posed to an Ex Vendee Globe sailor, what was the biggest priority he had, he said to keep the rig up, keep everything working. He showed me how he continuously maintained the IMOCA 60's rig, replacing soft shackles, inspecting everything. The silence of a rig with no steel was eerie. So, keep Ruca safe and buzzing along sweetly!

Cldt Luky

No way to catch wave height on film. when Kate had the camera inside the dodger the flat hatch way did give one a flat line to follow to see more of the waves. Most of the border of the US & Canada is on the 49th so you all are more than 90º from your old stomping waves.

More sail area will help the motion of the boat. Quite often the boat is well well reefed down (not a criticism) but it makes the boat wallow, rolly esp in a quartering sea way..dropping the mainsheet traveller all way down help unload the helm too. Brace yourself the southern ocean gets much much bigger than this on a mild day.
@SailingSweetRuca
@SailingSweetRuca Жыл бұрын
Thanks buddy! The reefs are to keep the speed off, we could put down 13-15s in this easily, but that's game over if there is a whale strike (it is whale season at the time). Conservative sailing in these parts is what we prefer. The mainsheet is centered to protect the steering console and throttle/shifter in case of an accidental gybe.
@marinesurveygroupltd7322
@marinesurveygroupltd7322 Жыл бұрын
@@SailingSweetRuca Do you run a boom preventer at all? Trav up like that will def load the helm up, maybe try a prevent then trav down? Sweet sweet boat you have!
@SailingSweetRuca
@SailingSweetRuca Жыл бұрын
@@marinesurveygroupltd7322 Thanks! You may have missed the preventer @10:27, you can see it running from the end of the boom to the bow, we mentioned it also. In this situation mainsheet also has little effect on leech tension, an thus helm. At those angles, the vang takes over when the boom is so far outboard, changing the location of the traveler would have zero effect on helm. It's a good thought though!

Did not disappoint! I recognize the steady pragmatism that accepts: these are the conditions, our experiences are the tools to accommodate them. Analyze, anticipate, respond, repeat. Those I met as a kid who’d sailed big seas seemed subtly re-calibrated; little mishaps onboard barely registered. For food, I rather liked marrowfat peas and sausage! If you ever find somewhere selling Cassoulet in a can, grab it! Fatty sausage, garlic, ham hock, confit duck, and white beans - great stuff.

Re-watching to see what I missed, and it's an awesome episode. Cold weather recipes Cook peeled patatos and ham in water, salt and pepper. When patato are almost done add green beans and finish cooking. Mash patato with your fork add pot juice, ham, green beans. Enjoy this one pot PA Dutch meal. Hope you are in warmer weather. It is a cold rainy fall day for me!!

Guys! What was that rainbow!!! Worth all the water slapping on Curtis, I believe! Amazing! And what a sail, too! I don't know about you but I don't like how shaky things get downwind, specially with waves adding to the mix :) Sorry for your sail and gone glove. That things happen. Enjoy! See you next week! Autopilot sensors and calibrations got me thinking ( hard to do sometimes) and I brought the subject at a vitual meeting the other day about auto pilots issues. Stan Honey, one of the world’s leading ocean-race navigators, in which he confirmed that even the best autopilots in the world (think tens of thousands of dollars) can’t steer as well as a skilled helmsperson in daylight, although said autopilots get competitive in the black-dark when the human can no longer see the waves. Stan also opined that the next big advance will be when cameras, like those being used for collision avoidance by racing boats (OSCAR), are interfaced to autopilots, and that will result in automation being able to beat a human helmsperson in all conditions, because the pilot will be able to see the waves, even at night. Probably not applicable to any of us, but interesting. Now we can improve its steering a great deal, by first being realistic about how badly it steers using the default settings, and then learning how to improve that by hand-tuning it for the conditions. Here are some notes I took on from people a heck of a lot smarter than me, on settings if you have the sensors to work on. 1.) Automatically change from apparent wind when steering upwind and reaching, to true wind when broad reaching and running. And changing the angle when that happens. 2.) Configureing the routine to change steering behaviour in gusts. 3.) Have wind and boat speed sensors that can be calibrated for different heel angles. 4.) When reaching, automatically bear off from course in the gusts and come up in the lulls. 5.) Allow the angle of the auto tack and jibe routines to be adjusted to match the boat’s optimal angles. You must have good polar information. 6.) Automatically drive off a bit to build speed after a tack, and then come back up to course. 7.) Have inserted a good target-boat-speed table of wind directions and speeds, again derived from polar curves.

Hey Bo! Good stuff! Stan is da' man! One of our sailing idols, we learned a lot from his website www.honeynav.com, maybe one day we will get the privilege of being on the same race course as him! We agree, Curtis is sure that soon a linked system (pilot and line controls) will be all the rage!

You're having a great experience there hey. For 50+ of my 80+ yrs I've lived in Australia between Quensland and Adelaide.(Sth Aust) did most of my sailing t'ween Adel and Strahan on West coast of Tassie (girl friend. and round the Southern tip to Hobart. All in the Fourties. Which are great sailing breezes in a well set up boat and common sense it's a great sail by yourself. in either my 32ft or later in 42 ft. Both Steel Cutters. PS Learn to Heave to as well when you need a rest in serious stuff. I don't know what those plastic buckets are like but in a good steelie is like curling up in a nice bed. No sea room. Drogue off stemhead Bows into weather. Getting shallow. drop ALL your picks off the stemhead and hope they snag and hold on something till it blows over. In the real rough. Run with small drogue or ropes, knotted.and hope you don't get any hollow backed bitches. They hurt when you hit the bottom. in the '50's when I was a deckie on North Sea Trawlers from England. We used to dread the top end of Scotland, the North Sea in winter coming round the corner off the Atlantic.would be probably one of the worst 3 sea states to be in on this planet..ALL big and black. all vertical and 25% with hollow backs. coming from all directions at same time believe me.. We were in Trawlers. and when it got bad enuff. we either trawled. or Headed into whatever for the 3 or 4 days and just steamed ahead at 3-4 knots just holding station, Till it blew out. Sometimes they were rolling over the deck from the bow at wheelhouse level. We just prayed there was no Black ice about. You little yachties have nooo idea what is out there wailing for you. How do you think Containers get ripped off the decks of huge container ships?. Ask some of the deckies on them. Have fun. and get used to a bit of bouncy water. it'll come in handy when it catches you one day.
