They tried to arrest him and confiscate his cameras for filming someone making bread. It was corrupt police officials. This guy's dealing with corrupt marine officials. And that's the story all the way across the country as far as I can tell. Disjointed corruption at every level. If it's not fraud it's bribery and if it's not either of those it's a power trip. Every travelers video from Egypt is the same. All the recommendations are where not to go and what not to do and what not to bring with you and who not to talk to and what not to say... Gee, Egypt sounds like so much fun.

My takeaways from this experience is to film interactions with officials, don’t post negatives on social media until you have left the country, and don’t visit Egypt. Sorry to hear that this happened. I hope you all feel better soon.

Its more complicated than this. They find out you never uploaded anything yet and its all sitting in storage you have on you, you might be in real big trouble. There are laws for spreading falsehood about the gov/country designed to make people disappear in the system. What probably saved him is the fact that they could not just make them disappear because someone is going to come look for them.

In a corrupt country, do NOT film interaction with officials. At least, don't let them see you. All that does is heighten your threat profile. Countries that don't have freedom of movement and don't have a tourism industry do NOT understand the concept of travel for pleasure. Anything that looks out of ordinary, especially if the person is carrying a camera, is asking for trouble. And yes, various agencies do not know what other agencies know. Nor do they know what their jurisdictions are. If the country is dysfunctional enough, officials will invent duties and responsibilities for themselves on the spot. And they're the ones with the guns, so don't underestimate what some official with an ego is capable of doing. (I've been to ~40+ countries in 4 different continents. I've been detained in and grilled for simply carrying a camera around.)

I travelled to Egypt with a commercial TV film crew; we were basically doing a pro-tourism documentary and had paid for all the required permits. However our guides advised us to hide our camera gear whenever the road police or the 'historic places police' came near because they could impose instant fines and confiscate our equipment, meaning lots of legality and delays in getting it back. The guides said the police and officials are poorly paid so they make up their income by such extortion. In a nutshell, the place was corrupt!

I'm not a navigator, just a tourist. I have been to Egypt twice as a tourist and it was enough for me. If I have a 2 week holiday I want to relax, not be stressed in a hotel or on the street. People are desperate to make money somehow, but they don't realize that everything they do wrong affects their tourism. If the locals doesn't change their mentality, then in a few years they will see that they have no tourists.

We had the same experience, a big group of 20 of us went to Sharm El Shiekh, 8 adults and 12 kids! We all went on a trip to the pyramids, the actual workers inside the pyramids were stealing out the kids pockets! Every time we turned around, they had their hands in one of the kids pockets....Never again!

Yeah, I have heard even worse stories than that. What about being kidnapped as a young woman alone on a beach and about to be taken to the mountains and raped? Only by standing tourists stopped that from happening, and that was a story from a friends trip to Egypt, who met the young lady on the way home.

Same here. I was surprised as soon as Keith said they where going to Egypt, that they would go there. I have heard many bad things from land tourists also. I will never go there.

If you want to go and see the pyramids etc it’s worth it and you won’t get issues with authority. Have a watch of Kurt Caz (young travel you tuber from SA) he covers Egypt well.

Exactly, I agree 100%. Be WISE and do the proper research and dont put yourself into situations that the rest of the world all KNOW is not a safe place to be. It alwasy amazes me that people go to these places anyway and then you hear of them getting thrown in prison, killed, their stuff confiscated, raped, attacked, jailed, or whatever and then they scream and holler for the USA to come save their butts when they shouldn't have been there in the damn first place. I hope Keith and his family have learned a valuable lesson in all this!

I agree with your assessment. As a pilot flying into Egypt it was a major pain. They expected landing fees in cash at an Egyptian air base. They were belligerent and unfriendly. It was one of the only times we carried cash on board. We dropped off our passengers, paid their fees and left as soon as we could. Not a friendly country.

The west coast of Africa used to be like that. Maybe still is but to a lesser degree. Woe to you if you landed in one country so the next country would forbid your arrival or even deny you services while overflying. Upon landing, have cash, cigarettes, booze at the ready. Often theeatened with arrest while being detained. And that's even before you keft the hanger. Mexico was that way and now is seeing a resurgence of those ways.

@@MichaelBuck thankfully they are in the Med. Egypt was my least favorite landing spot. I landed in Cairo from the East coast and stayed secluded in a U.S. hotel with service along with my crew. We stayed there until our party was ready to depart, they were there for Ararat’s funeral. There was nothing friendly or welcoming in that country. This country is a place you don’t want to stay.

Egypt hasn’t changed in 40 years. Lived in Cyprus as a teen and my dad would go to Egypt it was always an issue. Lots of corruption , I want to cruise the med but I’d have to rethink visiting Egypt.

40 years?! Try 4000! Americans don't really understand that the rest of the world has ancient history going back millenia. I love Keith's optimimism, but reality is that change will come VERY slowly in Egypt. I bet a lot of those guys were not navy, coast guard OR police. Just a bunch of dudes with guns and a boat. Also why one authority didn't know what any of the others were doing. I lived in Tripoli, Libya as a kid, and the resentment for Americans in many of those countries runs deep.

One anecdote - I had a friend visit Egypt (by land). Her experience was that it was a cool place to be with a very different culture and experience from the US. She also said that she was constantly harassed, and rarely felt safe. Scammers were constant, and the "authorities" did not care. She was lucky to meet some nice people who helped her to navigate all of this, so its not like everyone there was bad, but it was certainly not an inviting place. Others have said that this experience is par for the course there. For now, at least, my feeling is just that it is not good to be a tourist in Egypt.

It's great to hear that you visited Saudi Arabia and you're always welcome to come back. Regarding the restrictions on freedom of movement in the Saudi side of the Red Sea, there are a couple of factors to consider. Firstly, the ongoing conflict in Yemen has made travel through the sea more challenging, as I know from my own experience as a frequent hobby fisherman. Secondly, there are several large-scale sea projects in Saudi that have rendered many areas off-limits, even for some government bodies. I would be happy to pass along your feedback to the Ministry of Tourism in Saudi, who have acknowledged bureaucratic challenges between various government sectors when it comes to resolving cruise-related issues. Perhaps there is an opportunity for them to focus more on the yachting industry.

EGYPT was the hardest country I've traveled for those exact reasons, except I rode the Sinai twice by bus. Even though you think the footage of the boat/men might of stirred up the authorities, perhaps it also saved your bacon. With your high profile location and subscribers, if something were to happen to you guys, Egyptian heads would roll! No pun intended!!!

@@SuperMarioY Egypt is awful to visit in my opinion. More scams than anywhere I’ve ever been, government/police are awful, and the corruption is WILD. Beautiful country with a ton of history, but it’s exhausting. Went to the pyramids, and had at least 20-25 different people try to scam me. Pyramids are free to visit, and I’m glad I researched before I went.

Somebody I know went to visit, agreed taxi price towards the pyramids, several miles down the road taxi driver changed agreed price so he had the choice of being ripped off or walking on. He chose to walk only to be further harassed by the driver who eventually gave up and stuck with agreed price realising he will otherwise get nothing. I refused to believe it but now I do, absolutely horrible.

Most of authority assets are paranoid and low educated, They might thought you’re spying or a terrorist 😅, Although this is not an excuse for harassment or financial corruption or any bad behavior. I’ve been a sailor on a Containership before,and what I’ve experienced for 7 years of passing the Suez Canal,everytime the Pilot comes onboard you have to give a bottle of whisky and a box of Marlboro(that’s why every sailor call this a Marlboro Country-Egypt)

Certainly is easier when you understand someone’s motive. Sounds like “Egypt” achieved their goal, which was make you leave. Yachties are the embodiment of freedom, and that doesn’t jive well in countries that limit freedom of their citizens. It would be fantastic if the world was open to all travelers. As an American, I get that most Americans have no concept of limitation. I thank you for being brave enough to go and share this experience and hopefully things will open up to us all because of the effort y’all have put into this. Stay safe.

Saudia Arabia that is a real structured society tribes that is hierarchy is older with the law of the desert KZfaq, they’re not Arabs they speak Arabic and the Muslim but definitely did not Arabs. They have a system crooked, corrupted, and human life worth nothing from every three people that you meet Two of them on the payroll of the government as a snitch agent or any form of security. Wow Keith your agent definitely helped it sounds but likely your courage and patience probably was the biggest key to get out of that unscaved. The frontline battle was you in person and any wrong word, tone or body language could've set them off wrong way. Hey Team, another great episode. We've spent a bit of time in Egypt and completely understand where you are coming from. Years ago, I was there during the initial Arab spring and then more recently, we were actually married in Sharm El Sheikh... (for no reason other than it's beautiful and was a central location for our global friend and family to meet.) Over our time, we've absolutely loved the people, but the government has definitely made it difficult for everyone. It's extremely sad. Anyways, we are currently prepping the boat for an Atlantic crossing and hope to be in that part of the world soon. We look forward to seeing you guys somewhere soon!

Totally agree, used to transit the Suez Canal and it was always awful. Different officials no idea what the other are doing and all not leaving until they got the box of cigarettes. A great country but it’s sad to see it really is still not geared up for tourism. It is a place I vowed never to go back to!

Turkey is by far one of my top favorite countries. Have friends in Istanbul and traveled quite a bit throughout the center and western half of the country as well. Can't wait to go back!

Turkey was much better in the early 90s I spent a year there from Lake Van to the southern Tigress river to The capital, it was great but country has to a more restrictions 🌙

There seems to be a vulnerability to sailing that I never experienced when I was a kid growing up as an expat. I'm projecting a bit here but I'd always feel nervous about the dingy potentially getting stolen or damaged deliberately. Hopefully the Egyptian authorities will take a positive look at your comments and work together to make future yachting expeditions as enjoyable as it should be in such a beautiful and historic Country.

Having spent time in some of the garden spots of the world, I can tell you that things can go sideways in a very short time and for a foreigner it can quickly escalate. Glad it worked out for you.

In simple terms and in hindsight, not worth the hassle. They are the ones missing out into the great opportunity to fraternize with the rest of the World and the crew of Zatara specially. Zatara moved on into a new destination already. Done and dealt with it. Cheers!

This whole situation sounds like a nightmare! My one & only burning question is, why on earth would you want to stay in a country that obviously does NOT want you to be there!? Especially for two & a half months? It doesn't make sense to me.

They probably paid a lot of money to be there on vacation and paper work and agents. Don’t forget going around the world takes a lot of planning to be at certain places at a certain time and money. But you can count me out.

Over 50 years ago in Morocco a local told me that because I had a real Rolex watch, people would be interested in it. In Morocco they would like to look at it, but in Egypt they would sceme to steal it. He said that was the difference between their country's. Morocco are a very friendly people, but Egypt has been corrupt for centuries.
